  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW: RED FCS installer build 30

Did you make NEW proxy files? Make color changes and then make new Proxy files and see if the timecode is still the same?

I made color changes in Clipfinder, made new reference files, and all the timecode was wrong. I have fixed the timecode problem, as far as I can tell with Red Alert.

I didn't edit this project. Don't know how the Prores were made, but I have never met anyone who used L&T. Everyone uses RCX, Redrushes, Clipfinder, or something else so they have control.

This project was cut with prores files.

I cut the project into six reels, reconnected to _H files, and sent all six reels to Color with no problem. Everything worked. No problems.

A few minutes later I installed the new Red software.

I noticed a few clips in reel one were 2k and needed to reference _F instead of _H. So I went back into FCP and reconnected the 2K clips to _F and sent to Color, overrighting my working reel 1.

Now no matter what I do I can not make reel 1 work.

If I put new footage into FCP and cut something new and send to Color it works.

Something in this project was screwed up and the only thing that was done was install new Red software.

This is making me pull my hair out.

I opened all the clips in Red Alert and made new Proxies. Then went to FCP and made sure all the clips had the correct timecode. and they do. So I sent the sequence to Color and half the clips work now. The other half show the last frame of the R3D instead of the first frame.

This is very annoying!

How do I fix this? I have work that has to be finished!

Dusty

Dustin, I have been able to reproduce your problem. Try this:
In Red Alert force the use of Edge Code
Make new proxies
Then send to color. Save the project and quit.
Use Color Fixer or the same function inside Clipfinder to fix the looping bug.
It worked for me.

But it would be nice if generating proxies with the new software just worked...

Wait. Red Alert edgecode seems like it might be working. I just have to go and turn edgdecode off and then back on for every clip before I make new proxy. Since Edgecode is a check box and stays checked, I assumed it was working, but it wasn't.

So now I ma going through all 60+ plus one at a time and doing this stupid process. Hopefully everything works after doing this.

Gavin & Paulo,

Well, I think I have a fix. Use Red Alert and force timecode. My problem now is about half the clips need Timecode and half need Edgecode. So I am going through writing down which each clip needs so I can get them all working.

This is a pain in ass. I am trying to figure out how the editor did this.

Also why was this working fine before and then all this trouble after I installed FCS v30? I have checked and the reels I sent before I installed have this same issue, but everything is working in Color even though some proxies have TOD code, some have edgecode and some have 00:00:00:00.

Well, let me spend a couple hours getting the correct timecode in each clip and make sure that is the final fix.

Hi guys.

We have discovered a couple of timecode problems in RedCineX when generating the QT reference files. That's why the camera-generated files work, but the RCX-generated ones don't. We're working on a fix right now.

As far as why this showed up with the new Final Cut Studio support... I don't know. If I recall correctly, someone mentioned that there is a history of projects that were "fixed" by third-party tools being broken by new releases of the FCS components. This predates my involvement, so I'm not familiar with all the issues you guys have worked around in the past.

At any rate, we're working to get this fixed for you as fast as possible. I'm glad you have a partial solution in the meantime. Thanks to everyone for helping out.

Is this the latest release?

Did we lose the ability to edit directly from the proxies in FCP with build 30??

yikes... explain further?

I can say that since I installed QT codec 4.0... I get a lot more requests with in FCP to find the data in the (filename).r3D file... which takes substantially more time to relink clips (proxies).

I did not install the other components like the FCP L&T tool... just the codec.

We used to be able to drop proxies into a FC timeline and edit (no prores render)...we dont seem to be able to do this anymore.

Have you tested this?

I am able to, at least with non-mx footage, but again I have only installed the v.4 codec... not the other FCP plugins (which I never use).

We just conformed a series of spots shot on MX... we didn't work with proxies on this one, we transcoded for offline to 422 prores since we had so much 7D along with it. Anyway, using the XML2RCX script, I had no time code errors selectively transcoding selects from the offline and then running the high quality transcodes through Color for the online including 3k and 4k plates. Every thing conformed normally.

I do not send proxies directly to color, for a variety of reasons so I can't comment on the errors that involve this workflow.

There shouldn't be any problem putting the reference proxies in a timeline. What happened when you tried?

And aside from the QT codec, this isn't the final version of these tools; that is forthcoming.

Make sure you have the latest QT component installed as well. It should install with the new installer, but double check that it did.

Alternatively, L&T into native wrapped R3D's (not transcoded) seems to work better sometimes vs. the proxies. And yet, the proxies seem to handle a bit better other times. Not sure how to explain it... QT wrapped native files seem to give me fewer problems going to Color.

So I have tried changing all my time code. Half the project is TC, half is EC and some clips are half TC and half EC. The only option I have is to completely reedit this entire reel. This is insane.

I don't know how the original editor did this and I don't know why FCS v30 broke everything, but I am done. Since some clips are half EC and half TC, I don't think it was possible for the editor to do this and the Red software did some strange things that are not fixable without starting over.

I have lost all faith in new Red software.
