  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New RED Color Science - Test Pilot Feedback Thread

The new camera build only matters for on-set monitoring and the accuracy of white balance in the metadata. Nothing in the new build actually effects the pixels recorded in the RAW. Which also means you can use the new color science on old footage.

Jim

This makes perfect sense to the tests I did last night. It is really obvious once you update your build and look into the monitor.
Thanks Red team!

Yes Michael. Thanks. If I had sold rather than burned the midnight oil to get this new color science working, I'd be a member of OPEC by now...

We hope to have a beta version posted for everyone by the time you get back. This is a really important advancement for our program.

Safe travels...

Jim

Awesome! Thanks Jim

Please be aware that these changes are NOT in REDCINE or the SDK yet, so be careful...

Tell all your friends.

I don't understand why this magic build is made for the camera testers and not only for a new RED Alert! / RED Cine / SDK build update?

Pat

Because it's a radical change and we had to confirm it was "right" first under a wide variety of shooting scenarios.

I can promise you that your efforts are worth it... Even if it was simply onset accuracy that you were addressing I would be delighted!!

I've got a fantastic exposure system working for me with custom LUT's but I haven't been able to get close to addressing the colour question.

I have an agency shoot this week that is begging for this and even knowing it is on your radar makes me happy. (I'd guessed it was as I have previously thrown out a few slightly incendiary statments that didn't meet with rebuttals;-)

thanks again for pushing to make this camera system right! Sorry about the hours.

appreciative and waiting

OK,

It is amazing, really :)
To my eyes, it looks cleaner, fuller.

I am impressed, it’s really beautifull.
Certainly a major MAJOR achievement.

Hmmm…and Look at the color space…it’s Rec709 !!!!

Here are some grabs at various f/stops.
Zeiss ZF 50mm f1.4
The first one is at 4 f/stop.
Always 320 ISO Shutter 1/48
Two Arri 500W front with diffusion gels
One 1000W back/side
Minolta Color Meter IIIF reads 2990 K
Camera AWB reads 2700K

Also, some outdoors, most at 400 ISO (normal exp, then over and underexposed) with a Zeiss ZF 85mm f1.4 with a ND .9 Tiffen. Camera reads WB 5162 K

IMPORTANT:
These are desktop grabs only, from RA window, that have been converted to jpegs…so…the real quality is much better :)
Calibrated for 2.2 gamma.

ALSO, I have chosen very well saturated Rec709 color space to see the noise level…IMPRESSIVE!

AND FINALLY, the exposure variation indoors has been done only by playing with the lense iris, so it’s normal it’s a little softer wide open, and also stopped down at f8 1/2 and f11 (normal diffraction) :)

Your maths are singing Graeme !!!!

Antoine

What did the color picker in RA! say for kelvin, Antoine?

Graeme

Coming soon as Jim says...

Graeme

Holy @#@#...

I think that using a RA color picker is at least as precise as a good color meter...
the resulting image looks even more real, a little little warmer than the 2700K the camera read on the grey card !!!!

Antoine

Antoine,

thanks for your beautiful test shots.

I'm sure that all the test pilots are happy now because of new RA improvements.

Graeme,

Youre amazing! i'm on a feature since 3 weeks now and we had one shot (shoot 2 weeks ago) that is under exposed and the producers were freaking out because they though it might cost them money in post for denoising.

I reimport the same shoot in the beta RA and its night and day... i could push it one stop more and its handle the blue channel very well.

i'm speechless, amazing, seriously you guys at Red make my day and everyone on set is very impress right now.

Regards

Etienne

Hi Sanjin,

Indeed! for me, it's the most siginificant improvement since i have my camera. Not the same planet.
It's like if the sensor had been changed :)

Can't even imagine what will the Epic be capable of...

Antoine

all these tests look great and really promising.
will be uploading my own tests early this week as well as some older R3D's to see what the difference is.

thanks again graeme for the all around compatibility its such good news!
