  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Quad Core iMac

its a useless i7 machine guys.. it lacks tripple channel memory which is big performance improvement and also lacks the most important part of i7 which is overclocking... shame.. also it might be an i7 720 (laptop processor) ie.. 1.6GHz non-turbo mode..

Wrong on 2 out of 3 - It is not a laptop processor, and it is overclocked. Just look at the tech specs:

Apple Tech Specs said:
27-inch models only, one of the following:
  • 2.66GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.2GHz
  • 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.46GHz; Hyper-Threading for up to eight virtual cores

...If only Apple gave us an ExpressCard slot on these. Oh well.

That's what I'm saying. What I was thinking is maybe if you could take out the optical drive and replace it with an ExpressCard reader that would solve a lot of issues, I just don't know how to go about doing that.

Any chance Torrey or Peter can chime in their opinions?

Worthless junk If you ask me. Zero expansion just like every other iMac out there.

Ram is 1066mhz, I'll pass... you need at least 1600mhz for a good i7. But wow, its got a sd card slot.

Cant replace the optical drive... Its a slim drive like the laptops with a Header cable not a Sata Cable. Not possible/

No, it has a SATA cable.

"The good news is, it's a standard 12.7 mm, slimline SATA optical drive."

I have no idea what any of you are talking about... if I buy it, can I hope to edit 2k or 4k footage down the line with the fastest version? Normally I wouldn't get an "imac" but seeing as how they include a 27 inch screen, I think I'm going to have to get one... I just want to be able to edit my scarlet footage down the line and become a world famous filmmaking genius using this machine... that's the dream isn't it?

If the internal drive has enough storage for you, you'll be fine. Just make sure you make backups to external storage because it only has a single drive though.

We're just debating different ways of connecting high speed, redundant storage to the thing - it's a brilliant computer, but crippled by the lack of an eSATA port...

By the way, I've sent in some feedback on Apple's feedback form saying they should include an eSATA port - if they get enough requests they might consider it on future models - they put the Firewire port back on the 13 inch MBP because people complained.

Another question: would you buy the RAM from apple or elsewhere and install it yourself?

I'd install it myself - it's easy to replace and far cheaper if you get it third party. The manual tells you the type of RAM you need and how to install it too. But be warned:
WARNING: Apple recommends that you have an Apple-certified technician install memory. Consult the service and support information that came with your iMac for information about how to contact Apple for service. If you attempt to install memory and damage your equipment, that damage isn’t covered by the limited warranty on your iMac.

Pretty unlikely that you'll damage it, but still...

Jake, you absolutely will be able to work with Red footage on one of these. It just wont be as fast as with one of the Mac Pros. But believe me- I've edited a number of 4K projects on a Mac with less Ghz, less/slower RAM, and a lesser graphics card than the Quad-Core iMac has. If you have more time than money for your projects, you'll be fine.

How do you think this will work with Peter's Pocket Rocket or the one from Maxx Digital? Obviously it won't be nearly as fast since it's a USB adapter (still trying to find a FireWire version) but if it can make editing red footage a little bit faster I'll definitely think about getting it.

I don't think that would work - it's probably nowhere near fast enough.

Here's a question... how much space does 10 minutes of 4k footage take up? What about 10 minutes of 2K? Using the special codec that red touts of course... redcode is it?

10 minutes of 4K would be around 20GB for REDCODE36. 10 minutes of 2K would take up about 6GB (both of these are based on build 15 estimates but it should be a good guide).

Here's another question for ya... is 8 gb of ddr3 memory and a 512 mb video card good enough to edit 4k footage? What are the recommended system specs for editing 4k? Can someone shed some light on this issue. Merci.
