  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New project...

Oh, that's going be fun :)

i know its color in america .. we keep an eye on the destruction of our beautiful language from afar ..corner cutting cowboys .. i still wish they'd gone with either the apache , iroquois or shoshone languages myself.. i digres..

if its a phone :emote_headwall:

Konrad, either you are a serial jokester or you are a butcherer of the beautiful language you speak of. '-)

A reasonably nice fellow, that obviously must dislike cinema camera phones and love wildlife :)

Elsie, Konrad's obviously politely not yelling the first letter of each word. :)

Konrad, no matter what the language, even native speakers sometimes have a hard time conveying the right dose of sarcasm.

I don't think that wildlife preservation has any relevance to what Jim's project could be. Perhaps a new mobile phone is also just as irrelevant. I don't know exactly what direction Jim is going, but it isn't in the direction of mere gadgets or grandiose altruism.

BTW 'color' is the Latin spelling, so Americans can justify it, and I respect it. I write 'Pearl Harbor' and 'Sydney Harbour' in their respective native spellings. To do otherwise would be asinine.

The small cinema camera that's also a smart phone with 6k and 3D lens system (some are saying) is likely at least 100× more likely. If it was the other way around I would back the wildlife, but it is this way and something in common with present ventures, though too much for Red to push to consumers themselves. I've heard zero rational arguments against it being a possibility given the patents. But which ever it is we embrace it being the real reality. No use getting all preferential against something being possible because we want something else. If Jim narrowed it down to include wildlife and not the phone, I would be happy to admit it as a stronger probability. Just going on his words.

haha ..yeah, you're definitely right ..jim wants proper kudos at his age .. and a new phone would do it .. ***k the animals .. we've way too many species as it is.. and its not like they all depend on each other..its time nature realised we don't need it ..and elephants ? .. large waste of space iyo ..

..hopefully they'll get whats coming to them ..once we've dealt with the bees once and for all .. buzzing little b*******!

@wayane .. if we can increase global smog levels, we won't need olpf's .. and it'll bring down the cost of manufacturing phones .. fingers crossed it'll happen ..

I'm sorry THIS ^^^^^ was indeed hilarious. Thank you for healthy sarcasm (and NO it's not always the lowest form of "Wit").

if you didn't find my response amusing.. you may be because you take yourself too seriously karim.. look into that ;) .. but i know what you meant..
..but your own poor sentence construction suggests you think the work of the AWF is not for everyone .. so you left the door open ..

and i'm all good with english ta.. i live here .. i even used to try and teach english to americans at one time .. but they struggle with spelling , so i gave up .. c-o-l-o-u-r .. not so hard ..

if jim is making a new phone .. that would be one boring idea / story.. but thus far .. its just an idea some people are pushing on this thread ..lets hope jim has found a bigger purpose in life than filling that highly neglected market ..

"There is a new project that I am so excited about that I can hardly contain myself" .. yep , sounds like a phone .. wow, to think we could all be using them soon ? .. i can barely contain myself ..from laughing my titties off .. (yes, titties is a legit english word karim ..i'd love to play scrabble with you btw :)

i wish jim would invent something that gives me access to a raw bayer pattern from a red camera .. then i could backup my files in a "non-proprietory" format ..and they'd be 1/3 the size of a debayered tiff.. now that would be cool ..a DNG file would suffice..

This was hilarious too...

(THANK YOU)...

I'm originally from the U.K. but had to learn "Americanese" to make myself understood, fifteen to twenty years of that you just give up LOL.

It's funny when I read those two posts it almost sounds better read with an Irish accent... Just wondering where you hail from?... (Or is it hale? )

April 1st / April fool's day in couple of days could make this thread absolutely BRUTAL... :-)

Ta,

Eric (I needed a good laugh from the other side of the Atlantic... Thanks again!)

It's NOT a phone OMG ... (will happily eat a hundred hats if it is).

Watch this boy Konrad, he's like you..

You want me to keep an eye out for little confectionery hats for you?

Seriously you guys are making logical mistakes here. Not saying it is sooner, that is probably coming anyway, and will be a revolutionary imaging product consumers can access, but it merely is a possibility.

Now, all we need is Jeff and that guy with the fractal compression to turn up.

Fractal compression - I recall a really interesting documentary about fractals hosted by Arthur C. Clarke. Wouldn't you know it, fractals were useful in data compression after all. I think there is a logical limit on how good compression can be. Otherwise you have unresolvable physical and logical problems. Let's say you can take a 1GB file and compress it into two bits:

01

Okay. That means that there can be only four unique files that you can decompress from two bits. But there is an indefinite number of possible 1GB files. Where did they go?

I can, 1 bit to say the file contents differ and the other bit to say it is black or white bits. This is at least 50% inefficient though, I can do it with just 1 bit for any size data set. I can even do it with 0 bits (why I hate cleanup and copy utilities junking my empty directories). The existence of the file etc implies a data set of particular type. I can get infinite compression that way. I am a genius you know. This might sound like a good trick, but it is extremely useful.

You can call the explanation "Wayne's Law". Just great stuff to really stuff around pretentious engineers and mathematics compression students quoting faulty laws that fail logic. I even have worked out it is possible to compress pure randomness production. But as Konrad has said, nobody is listening, that is why I work it out, I'm open to the possible. The real constraint on the pure randomness production compression is the range of the values. In anyway, likely slim pickings unless you strike large series. This is no fancy stupid maths manipulating things in order to figure out how to push it up hill, it is pure mechanics. This has been the problem in computer science all along, what I designed around, it was computer science under the influence of mathematical people, rather than computer engineering (who still get under the thumb of mathematics). Computers should have been much better. It is the enlightened way, which even people here who expect to manipulate logic like a mathematical formula to magically spit out their desired answer, have trouble with. It is not sophistication, but comprehensive simplification. You probably know more about good engineering and logic reading this than most people, it is that bad.

Well, with my limited knowledge of philosophy, here is what I think I know:

- Physically, compression can only be so efficient before it becomes destructive

- However, if you can in fact store data in one or zero bits, this would only be possible using quantum mechanics, because that allows you to store data in time, as well as space

Hypothesis: if you can compress data to zero bits, then there is no logical reason to choose to have it uncompressed, even while accessing (reading) it. It will always reside in one or zero q-bits(?). There is no use to having physical storage if you have q-storage.

Question: can you store multiple files in the same bit, under your scheme? If so, how many? An indefinite amount? Or, say, up to 26 times - one for each possible dimension?

So far, quantum computing is promising but I have no knowledge of a quantum computer that has any practical value whatsoever. So far researchers have given us sweet fuck all. But if it's possible, I want our country to be the first. We can't have terrorists getting ahead on this sort of thing.

Edit: I think that where computing is concerned, the progress made is shocking to most of us, even those who like them. But me, I look at Apple and think, okay, it's time to ditch OS X for something completely new.

Jobs understood: you can't stay in one place with technology, otherwise you're finished. You can with some things, like film stocks, or art, or music, or storytelling, or camera lenses, or your morning cup of coffee. Right? But with computers - and with digital sensors - there's no point hailing the revolution and then telling everyone to stop at the place you find convenient.

You know what I'm looking forward to? Kodak's next 500T stock. That won't come for a while, but I think it's going to be great. Will Kodak find a replacement for silver? If it means better film, then I'm all for it. I'm not going to cling to silver just because it's 150 years old.

Lol Karim. Reread it, it is only a trick with limited direct usefulness, but an important lesson.

Google is working on a quantum computer. I've got to look down that technology path myself. My version of quantum computing would work with it, but maybe I'm wrong. Knowledge, there is too much of it for me to learn to figure a lot of things out in my limited form.

Konrad, either you are a serial jokester or you are a butcherer of the beautiful language you speak of. '-)

elsie ..i don't ever use capital letters ..but i got a much higher day rate working as a poet , than i ever have as a camera rental company, filmmaker, or ..anything else ive done . the reason i don't use them is too long winded to explain here, however..

.. i rarely use full stops either.. unless it is to express some form of sincerity, such as a condolence .. a fullstop might imply i've stated something as a fact, or that i've described everything i think i believe about a subject ..or any numbers of other possibilities that i don't want to imply .. there is no last word in anything i say , so full stops are irrelevant ..its also a way of reminding myself that i'm happy in the knowledge ill die knowing nothing for sure ..and i'm open to new ideas..

yes, i'm either a serial jokester, or a butcherer .. fullstop .'-) ..and nothing in between ..

quantum computers already exist, as do quantum networks (military, and commercial implementations) .. and algorithms for cracking encryption on quantum computers have already been designed.. they'll update you on progress when they need to ;) .. quantum computers don't work with bits btw

the maximum amount of information a piece of space can contain, regardless of what is in that space, is generally accepted to be the surface area of the space, divided by the area of planck length (..presumably squared ..as its a 1d measure..nb, im not a physicist)

below planck length , things get strange .. but general scientific theory is currently broken ..unless you regard the universe as a hologram, in which case it gets slightly better ..and this is the current thinking in theoretical physics ..

no such thing as a terrorist , .. its a relatively new b.s word.. popular because large powerful nations don't like to call them freedom fighters , or describe them as a resistance movement .. even when they're fighting on their own ground .. go figure ..easier to sell as terrorist, or illegal combatant ..which is another b.s phrase ..along with "collateral damage" and "sorry about your dead family"

and technology is generally destructive and built on unsustainable supply chains that someone other than the end user pays for

Anyway, this is Jim's thread, maybe we should wait for him to say something.

At the end of each working day, Jim checks the progress of this thread. Sometimes he chuckles, and sometimes he shakes his head.

I'm tempted to write a novel about this. I'll call it The Truth About the Jim Jannard Affair.

@ all you awesome and well meaning techno-crack heads and high end gadget junkies... I just want to remind y'all that there is a real emotional center to all of this and many things besides...

DO watch the Paul Nicklen RED Collective (short) Sea Legacy that Jarred Land posted...

Here are some quotes from the piece by Paul Nicklen... (as it seems that is easier for some than watching Racing Extinction (lo)..).

Some quotes that you guys might chew on...

"You want this footage to live for ever".

"I'd say with all the visuals I do I want it to be a cross section of art, science and conservation".

"I want my viewers to feel what I'm feeling..."

"If I want people to care ... I need to transport them into the places and habitats I care about..."

I just want to make the case that its not about new "Gadgets" or making a different kind of dent in the film industry... It's more about giving a sh*t (as per Konrad (the poet says here)) and what processes, structures, technologies can be brought to bear in a much more long lasting permanent frame work that actually does some good and does not slide backwards or is forgotten.

Watch the piece and bring your heart.

I understand your compassion for the environment (and Jim's and others as well) and salute you all for it.

But I do not think that is what this new project is about. Forgive us techie oriented posters but we take our cue from mister RED Leader Tech Commander himself as he has suggested we will be putting down a deposit on some sort of tech or another when the time comes.
