  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New project...

Some of these suggestions for a new project are kinda crazy lol I don't feel like Jim would have posted about his project on the RED forum unless it had something to do with imaging or glass.

I think his original plan was to be on social media, but had a lot of requests to post here. Which makes sense... on Face Book, Twitter, whatever else... he's a Grade Two fish in a big pond. On REDuser, he's a Whale of a guy. '-)

Did he sell it?

:lurk5:

Check out Jim's facebook page. Although I think its a little "Cray cray" to guess who or what the man IS or what's going on in his life or mind etc.? (Boundaries anyone???? LOL); but to buy back Oakley would be unprecedented. The impression that seems to gel from posts of current and past Oakley employees is that its FUBAR (very high turn over of CEOs (apparently)... Seems like a pretty irreversible process thanks to LUX and to buy back Oakley and unscramble that "Omelet" seems like it would be a very destructive and pointless project. I have to admit from my own experiences when I have had to hand over the keys to projects and initiatives that I started I prefer to move forward onto new things and devise ways to raise and broaden my game and not look back. Jim does not seem like someone that engages in "Backwards" thinking. It is sad to hear how someone might drive something into the ground or off a cliff that you put ten years+ of your life into.

@Levi... +1

Overall we have about 20 years of "Softcopy" data and imagery for which there is NO hard copy and that is at the limits of what conventional (unmanaged media storage can sustain). Jim speaks of the "Future" or doing things that also benefit the future of RED and RED Users... To be honest I would be hard pushed to think of a more data intensive "Softcopy" user group on the planet. I mean seriously who is generating more softcopy data right now and into the future?

Sooo I would expect the "Son of" REDRAY or Red Ray "Extended"... 'cause someone at some point has to do something about all that data that has an average shelf life of 20 years... 4K projector would be super cool too (and very popular amoungst RED USers too I would think).

Also I think Jim would not mention "Racing Extinction" unless it was actually relevant... I don't think its a BS "RED" herring (no pun intended).

Happy Olympics everybody! I can't wait!!!!

For it to be over Eric, a bit like this thread. :)

Hold it! Helium POV on a helium drone, above sporting events, going back in time.....

Having you been reading my patent notes Marc? Been considering some pretty cool stuff. Like this. Its not as far fetched as people think, just requires somebody to connect the dots (the dots being the things that work and how to work it).

Got some pretty green glow light show here. Looks like one of the cities transformers about 2km straight out of my bed room window blew up, lovely big green sky, like the Matrix.

Probably from this

It would be great if Jim has addressed the very real issue of how the human race can preserve/archive the digital representations of our arts/culture/civilization. In the words of George Santayana - "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." The risk of losing the treasure trove of human knowledge that exists only in obsolete digital files is real. Manifesting a durable record of the digital era would be a great contribution to humanity, and Jim is one of the few people I know who is aware of these kinds of issues...

Cheers - #19

I dreamt last night Jim would construct the first manned Drone /multicopter for the price of a middle class car. The Henry Ford of the 21th century.

What if Jim and Red create a Media distribution channel? Remember Red Ray? It was supposed to be a distribution channel for red content in high quality.

Red currently has representation and people creating content with Reds from all over the World. A "Netflix" model or competitor, with Red specific content and at the same time showcase for Red Technology would be very, very interesting. A "Red Channel", with original programming, not only Fiction, but all sorts of scenarios documentaries, live events, yet including community specific programming tutorials, workshops for Red specific gear?

I've always thought that something along the lines of 'REDStart' could be an idea, basically a Kickstarter type service as a crowdfunding gig for the RED Production community. I don't mean this as an insult but there are lots of 'fanboy' elements within the community and here on REDUser. Mix that with the fact that there is also representation here by many of the top film production entities allows for a meeting point of all interests. A community that could engage it's followers more by allowing them to contribute to projects created with RED Technology could be a positive addition to the whole RED Community in general, not to mention the fiscal benefits.

Imagine smiles on the faces of the Michael Bay, Steven Soderburgh or Peter Jackson fans when given the chance to back their next film albeit with a small donation and get their name in the credit roll for example. For the filmmakers every penny counts.

Sell a camera, make, I dunno, maybe $10k profit on the top end package? On the other hand take a 5% cut on a successfully funded REDStart project with a theoretical budget of say US$2mil and you're looking at something somewhat North of peanuts. The beauty of it is that the individual projects would also be marketed by the efforts of the individual filmmakers so they could also attract potential backers and sponsors to chip into the project from outside of the RED Community, drawing more attention to RED in general. Win Win in my book.

You listening Jim? Could be good for the brand...

You can sell an 8k cinema camera for less than $1000 with lens you know.

I was addressing the RED product line, not from a second hand perspective.

That's the sort of thing you can do with Redstart, if you were to widen it. A lot of things that can greatly change the world are technical products, and I have been waiting years to do it. The problem is the patent system is so so so CORRUPT. So, if you are going have to kick start a project you need patents for protection, trademark, registered this that, before you put it out there, to protect yourself from copiers.

But if we could do it a bit different, "this is the objective, we need funding for the protections", "we need funding for the design (and it's protection)" "then we need funding for development, and at the same time, development of the business, development of distribution and marketing", and "development of manufacturing resources". These are different aspects of product development.

But if we could start funding rounds, starting at objective moving to protections (anybody that doesn't have some priduct aspect that is protectable at this stage (something said objective is based on) is maybe asking a bit much, and basically is asking funding to move from objective to something worth protecting (so they should have the product and plans secretly laid out. But the reality, is that there will be.people that have a passion and want to develop the new solution to sat, hair cutting to cut your hair in under a minute (I've got such a solution at the moment and proposed design of mechanism). You know them, they are good, may have done things before, are recognised business person. So they ask you money to research and come up with a solution, before they ask for funding to protect it. And so forth for ach stage.

At each stage progress is independently verified. By a relevant professional and maybe representative, in a permanment non disclosure, no compete agreement, that becomes invalid in aspects, as those aspects are released, however the non compete on the aspects will go 3-5 years beyond disclosure, to give time to make money on the product (on production works all non disclosure and non compete should past 5 years with or without disclosure, as the disclosure based system is asking only really.needed for patentable things, and maybe businesses, which all require large monies and long keas times, and distinct new aspects (say like a new genre would be in production). These professionals are there to ensure the money is being spent, proper activity is hapoenning, and people arent sitting around doing.nothing ripping people off. Now there can he engineers that make a living verifying stages of products.

With the multiple stage system, share of ownership can be offered, based on proportion of money put in. Unlike Angle investors asking for 80%+, now you offer shares in 10-20% of the business. The other 80+% is yours to work out with otther priniciple investors/partners.. Workers could he paid with a proportion of ownership based on hours of work at set pay (this might reduce the funding for each stage a bit where not dependent on outside heavy costs).

The people work through each stage and the investor can see the progress, and bail early. But at the same time, people are voting on viability of product and creating external public interest. So much more civilised than private funding of the past, where they ask for 80%+ ownership of a good business, even if it's 1,000x the money they put in, and thrown money against the wall of many investments, hoping to 'score' big to cover the loses, off of somebody's good work (often 80+ hours a week work for years) and to chuck them out once they have establised their 80% business. So the real worker, founder, brains, behind the business and it's profit, gets ousted with a up to 20% stake (maybe less than 6%). Very parasitic.

The above reflects my previous schemes. You could apply the sane thing to productions too Mark.

I agree Elsie. I was very excited about Redrsy, and the possibility of independent content distribution. Butnthen they got in with odemax. Netflix has tanked the money the market. So now the cost tobsetup a new netwirk to the return is lower. However, Red only.needs to approach netflix to set up such a business, using their network, separate, or under the Netflix name. It is advsntagouse for both. Netflix gets money from.the use of theirbequioment, and Red gets to show Redray technology off to Netflix who may be interested in licensing it.
