  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New project...

It has to do with space. And travel. And time. And electronics.

Get ready to place your deposit. It will be guaranteed by me.

Turn by turn navigation guided by a live satellite video feed to determine traffic conditions.

Funny that this sounds like an electronic space-time travel-thing... not advanced stuff at all :tongue_smilie:

Maybe it's a holographic wall so you don't have to travel and therefor save time? :001_smile:

Ces, have you been smoking weed?

4k laser projector!

That is a funny definition of time travel Emir :)

So, really only one person on this thread knows all the details. :)

I'll be curious just how close or far away the guesstimates were

At least two remember? Look for the moderator post.

Sorry guys I haven't read this whole thread so forgive me if this speculation has been covered already.

Light Field Camera.

Assuming it's camera related. But I'm sure Jim has a broader focus than that.

I'll fill you in, it was said it was not desirable here years ago. They did announce a 3D firmware update for a single lens I believe.

As we get closer, this is going to be my prediction:

Like some people already mentioned, it might have to do with VR or augmented reality.

Jim has had the opportunity to see some incredible stuff, not just the places he's had the chance to travel to, but he has also seen some of the most incredible footage that has been captured with RED and even other imaging devices. National Geographic footage, NASA, you name it, just spectacular stuff which all could serve as inspiration.

So what if we could be transported to many of these places in a matter of seconds? Not tele-transportation obviously (though that would be incredible), but an electronic device or system that would allow people experience a location in a very intimate and special way. You could just "be there"

A device or system like the one I just mentioned covers electronics, time, and travel. I'm missing space. Space could be literal, just another location we could travel to, but it could also be a satellite, which would control and/or broadcast for this device or system, if that's the case maybe another hint could be the word "communication" but maybe giving that hint would have been giving too much away.

Or it might be something completely different, but if I'm close, do I get a cookie?

Teleportation should be possible (yes I work on those ideas too. My second fictional book series should incorporate such an abstracted technology), but not desirable in certain terms. I knew this guy years ago that was telling me the latest conspiracy theory. That the one world government was making millions of souless clone soldiers to take over the world. I realised somebody had been telling him a conspiracy that was based on Attack of the Clones that had been out recently. Now maybe they do invent a teleporter and millions of people started teleporting, turning out soulless copies at the other end.... Maybe corporate America has secretly had this for decades.

Things above normal, needed for everyone and certainly not mainstream, with a flavor of supporting nature. That is what I got so far.

The only real thing that comes to my mind, Water Farms. Without water, no animals, no farming, not future. Harvesting water out of the air and without any power requirements. Done since a while, but only sparely. I could even see it in the backland of L.A., CA :o)

Let's see what really is behind this, as it feels like that we will know very soon.

Ces, have you been smoking weed?

Hahah is it that far-fetched? I just like traveling as much as I can, but for those moments I can't I would love to indulge in technology like that. I could throw other predictions, but that's the one I'm sticking to. :cheers2:

Plus, if properly implemented it could bring awareness to wildlife protection groups and such.

Well the real issues that require course correction are far beyond our control. We are stripping natural resource at a violent rate. There is too much political and commercial mitigation. At the other end, people by in large are lethargic and uniformed.

So generally we are required to settle with useful and practical.

Well I'll toast anything that has to do with wildlife protection...

Can someone fill in the blank regarding space and time? Is the missing descriptor 'save' space and 'save' time?

I'm retracting or redacteding my previous guesses. My new, new guess is a miniature laser projector, possibly passive 3D. Or a Go Pro style camera with built in mini laser projector. Mini HDMI, wireless. RED shooters get to be early content providers. Sidestepping the narrow band distribution channels. Wow! A mini 4k projector.

I think it has been stated already. Making a concerted effort to be as far off base as possible. :)

Where would pricing need to be for a consumer RED laser projector? What is that disruptive number?

Based on the patent posted - modular accessory system for smartphones creating professional tools out of commodity devices.

I am guessing this will specifically be for still photos to begin with, with some video capability but not as a core focus. Basically take the idea of the DSMC and 'Obsolence obsolete' but apply it to the still camera market by decoupling the 'computer' 'sensor' and 'lens' so that each is upgradeable separately. But instead of manufacturing the computing part off the bat, the computing part will initially be powered by commodity phone hardware.

Later they may build their own phone (much like how RED One started from flexible but ineficcient FPGA tech then went to ASIC, this will put the technology in the hands of photographers earlier, but following DSMC modular thinking allow them to remove obsolence later by providing their own heart for the system).

Photography will be the flagship use case, but the concept will ectend further into any portable professional handheld toolset that could ve improved by upgradeability.

Jim has regularly equated time travel to photography, space can mean size convenience rather than outer space, phone systems are ubiquitous so that's everyone covered, so from that patent and the hints I am dairly confident this could ve what Jim is talking about.

Also Jim believes in functional accessories that create tangible improvements to an existing experience. It's what Oakley did, starting from hanfle grips, and its what RED does with DSMC and attempts with obsolecence obsolete. Applying that same model to consumer photography through accessories for phones that just treat the phone as a CPU for an attached platform would be consistent with past activities.

The reveal can't come soon enough. I'd like RED to challenge Sony's short throw laser projector but at a consumer price point. Just doesn't seem the way of RED to bother with low margin electronics. And the general consumer would probably lack the patience to wait in line for product shipment unless it were a big ticket item. Whatever Jim announces, please let it be available in time for Christmas.

I can't wait to spill the beans... it is killing me.

Jim

A 4K Dolby Vision home cinema projector with laser source, 5000 Lumen and 1000000:1 On Off contrast would be nice. What we need for HDR projection at home with little compromise.

Wayne you definitely have to introduce me to your weed guy. :)

I don't have one, that's why the lawn around the back and side of my house are full of weeds (plus I suspect they drenched it glycoohate neat before I moved in. Basically no grass there).
