  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New problem...

QA is a cruel mistress. It greatly effects the number of cameras that pass on a daily basis, but is absolutely necessary for a product of this level of sophistication and complexity. Enough so that it makes daily delivery numbers impossible to predict. The best I can do today is to tell you that if you're paid up today, you'll get a camera in May. The longer ago that you were paid up, the sooner that email will come. Sorry for the vague answer. When greater details are available, you'll be the first to know.

Could you tell us how many you have to ship exactly? (AKA, how many have been fully paid and you are waiting for...) Also, is some of the issue not having enough camera bodies made right now? I keep thinking that the slowness is in the QA and shipping, but now I'm thinking that actual manufacturing might be slow also...

Matthew

Houston, we have a problem.

Please be patient as we will catch up quickly. If this is unacceptable to you, we will gladly refund your payment until we can ship.

Brent and Kelly are trying their best to sift through this issue and we expect that this is a momentary blip on the screen because of NAB...

Jim
Slow down. You don't want any embarrassments caused by trying to beat deadlines. You'll get there.

While R&D might need to be "24/7"; actual production needs to be kept more at "8/5", however painful it might be. "More haste, less speed," and all that.

Anybody who has committed themselves to something based on a expectation of a firm delivery date only has themselves to blame.

Well, like I said before... I'm okay with whenever I get it. But my situation became a little different then I intended when I had to order the body first and separately from the accessories for financial purposes.

I was planning on doing the "buy now" for my accessories once I became a "Red Owner", which is the moment Red actually ships. But since it's a month away, probably, I don't want to wait even more and get further back in the accessory line, if there is one. I'm sort of in limbo now. If I order the accessories, it's not as a red owner but it's also not as a Red #2-4xxx either. I'm would like to order the regular Red accessories, but I definitely want to get in line for the Pro LCD. What should I do?

Jim, I just sent an email to Brent about this.

Basically I am one of those people who reserved a RED after NAB (I know I wish I would have done it sooner) but I am number #4033 should I just pay for it in full right now, even though it won't ship till September? I am just trying to help out the company in anyway I can and if that means paying for my camera months in advance then I am happy to do it.

Robert Hoover is my rep also. He has been great. Quicker replies than I expected and very helpful. Jim, when you get a chance, please give Robert a pat on the back for me. Thanks. Oh, and Jim, hope you enjoyed the Cohiba. It was a very small "thank you", but, heck, what do you get the man that has everything?

I second that.

Robert's been fantastic and everyone at RED is doing their very best under such circumstances. You really couldn't ask for a more professional group of people to deal with.

Thanks guys.

It's no problem. . . waiting a little while longer is more than worth it.

Thanks for the offer, Michael. I replied to your email. The only hope we request is patience and understanding. And we totally understand why some of you can't grant that request at this time.

Michael,
You can send me the funds and we will send you a live webcam feed of our Red #83 to watch until yours arrives. I'll email wire instructions. As soon as you get the "Your Red is ready to ship" email we will promptly send the funds to Red on your behalf.

Its a bummer, that's for sure, but on the plus side:

1. Pro LCD might be shipping by August, so I can forgo the other LCD.
2. EVFs might be caught up by then, so I can forgo the LCD.
3. Might have a PC QT codec, so I can edit with a PC.
4. Kino Flo Kelvin Tile's might be out by then, so I can hold off on lighting kit for now.

Hi Jon,

Will this new issue with the sensors effect that May delivery for the paid customers ??

Thanks

Greg

Well these things happen, I appreciate the communication and am glad that you're up front that you're NOT compromising on the QA.

So... When you open the delivery box, does the RED ONE have its own version of that new car smell? Just trying to live vicariously :)

Paid customers waiting for shipment are our number one priority right now..
We are hoping that the top glass is just a short term issue, and are planning on resolving it in tandem with the increase in demand.

Time will tell but we don't anticipate it adding much of an increase to the new schedule.

Oh, and just to be clear in case someone reads it wrong.. its not an issue with the actual sensors.

It's not a "new car smell". I hear they have contracted with the Great Yellow Father to make the camera have a just opened can of film stock smell. This is to ease the path for some older folks in the industry.

Michael I think 4XXX was a november ship date not september. unless they somehow beat the numbers. Im in the 4xxx range too

I wonder if you can get that as one of those plug in air fresheners.

Houston, we have a problem.

Nobody said this was gonna be a picnic. Bad things are often easy cheap victories while Good things tend to be very difficult accomplishments. It took Edison how many attempts to find the right light bulb element? 1500 or so?....the point is, getting a design correct is really difficult--- especially when it's new technology. Getting the production army to march in step is another difficult task aswell.

We're working on it

I'd buy one. lol

One day at band camp I opened up a brand new 2,500' roll of 65mm camera negative in a brightly lit room at Cinema Products. The look on the Kodak reps face was priceless. lol I can still remember that smell.

Well said! I don't really see it as a problem anyway. Everything has been clearly stated from day one, especially things will change. I can understand the frustration of those who feel their number is being delayed, but think of those who have had their money down for a lot longer and been through many delays waiting for the camera to get to a level of completion that they feel they could work with. You see many of the early reservation holders aren't corporations, but enthusiast stretching to reach a new level of production, so be patient, I have a feeling by the end of the summer we all will be seeing red, at least through the EVF of a red.

oh the bright side you'll have a build thats further along and probably has more features by the time you get it. I just hope the build 16 issues get worked out soon

Somehow I'm reminded of that scene in Requiem for a Dream, where all of the heroin junkies are mobbing the 18-wheeler, demanding "product."

(Trust me, I'm no better than anyone else.)
