In order to use 2x anamorphic lenses correctly you need a square (35mm Full Aperture 4:3) not rectangular (S35mm 16:9) sensor size. The only cameras on market right now with that sensor size are the ALEXA Studio, ALEXA M, ALEXA 4:3 Plus and the Phantom HD Gold.

Dragon Sensor Upgrade: $6000

Dragon Full Aperture 4:3 Sensor Upgrade: $12,000 (hypothetical)

Would you spend the extra cash for that true anamorphic look ?

Adrian that's very unlikely. The Red Sensors are 2:1 so with a 4:3 aspect ratio you'll need 50% more processing per frame. That's a lot.....

You forgot Canon 1D-C

Remember most current anamorphic lenses where not made for S35 but for academy 35... For that reason they (especially the short lenses) do not resolve so well in the corners of the 4:3 alexa cameras. Then your option is to zoom in and loose resolution. For that reason I very much look forward to use the 4:3 center of the coming dragon sensor for our Hawk C's the "6k Ana" I think will be perfect, high enough pixel count and a frame size that fits the lenses perfectly. The down sample to 1/2 in vertical will only improve the debayering and leave us with a frame size that we can actually post in.

So as I see it the dragon sensor is a 4:3 sensor with the option of folding out it's flanks and shoot even bigger 16:9 pictures... :)

Not sure but I think the numbers are as follows:

Dragon 16:9, 30×15.8mm
Dragon 4:3, 21.06x15.8mm

Alexa studio: 4:3 23.76 x 17.82 mm

And looking at the above I can only say that I rather have the dragons 30mm in width than the Alexas 23,7mm just above scarlet 4k size...

But then again, yes! I would like to have a vista vision sized sensor at 8k... or double that a 70mm 4:3 at 16k would be optimal, even though I could think of many cool shots that could be done with sensors 3 times that size.

But vista 8k would be optimal for my collection of FD lenses so I would be happy with that at least for a little while.

True, but the only anamorphic lenses I've used that have this problem are the 40mm and 50mm Kowa Anamorphics (the glass/lens is just too small).

Try the 25 lomo... or even the 35mm hawk. the edges becomes quite soft.

here hawk 35mm on epic full frame: http://www.syndicate.se/Files/~usr/hawk/A004_C001_0616LI.35mm 5k.jpg
and here in 5k ana: http://www.syndicate.se/Files/~usr/hawk/A004_C002_06163K.35mm 5k Ana.jpg

as you can see it does not hold pup much longer then that, but dragon will be a perfect match.

Did you mean 35 lomo? I have seen a 22mm lomo, a 30mm lomo and a 35mm lomo, but never a 25mm. Does such a thing exist or is it just a typo?

You are right Nick 22mm it is... quite wide that lens :)

My guess:

1. ALEXA
2. EPIC
3. EPIC
4. ALEXA

That's a hell of a lens ;-) You guys own it ?

On a side note, a 4x3 chip would be nice, but 5k anamorphic works out just fine. Really the only reason to shoot anamorphic is for the look, and you get that plenty and sort of use the sweat spot on the wide lenses. As you say, the wides fall apart at the edges. Of course, that is part of the look. Who needs fancy vignettes and soft edges in post when you can shoot anamorphic on the day ;-)
