  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New MoVI

hold your horses... yet again everyone is hyped for a gamechanger, calling it better then all the competition... i wanna see some real footage from users (not promotional videos). god damn this forum is sometimes so full of ass kissers and some have already burned their lips few times.
non the less Movi was better then others so far in most parts (price wasnt the best, snow or rain was a big problem with movi exposed cables,...). lets wait and see what this one can do in real life situation...
This has nothing to do with hype. We already know what Freefly is capable of. The Movi is already an amazing piece of kit if you know how to use it.
The Movi Pro is a considerable improvement in so many ways over the original design, so it has nothing to do with speculation or hype, it's pretty obvious why people are getting excited over it. It's not a "game changer" in my opinion (the first Movi qualified as a "game changer", this one is "just" a huge improvement), but it corrects almost everything that I didn't like on the first iteration (which already was pretty mind blowing).

Nils,
not saying it will happen with Movi,... but DJI put out a new Ronin and it was worst then the old one with never ending drift problems... new stuff brings new problems,... and let see if they did everything right... you see a lot of other gimbals out now in the higher price range like Newton,... thats why im saying lets wait and see some real tests from customers, not promo videos. there was few gimbal related topics here where people praised stuff that never worked as it should in the end...

Thats mostly because people get into GBs for new products that arent even at sometimes shipping, so they can get a beter deal in price , while some others get freebees , so you get a lot of promotion for things they arent even certain if they will work at the end, just like they would do if they have tested those extensively.
Camera owners are not always specialized enough to be able to tell if something will work or not, and they jump into this with just a a quick question and answer here and at FB.
The problem is that when someone looks at new toys he gets exited and his psycology is 90% being positive that this will work. And when someone comes out and says , look this cant work that well because of this or the other reason , then they dont like this, because it brings their dreams and expectations down, so they start defending the product they never had seen, or touched, just like they would if they have tested it and put it through its paces. And the guy that poined out problems that might be valid is the bad guy.
Ive been there many times.

However, Freefly does its own deals with people, do their own thing with out trying to wait for others to do stuff that then they can copy or integrade, and they Move on hahaha pretty much its called a Movi LOL. I want to believe that them being out there for such a long time , is making them more serious that any other company, since tey were the first, and they have lasted in the industry so far standing strong. They wouldnt rush now and face problems later because of this.

In fact from what I have seen so far, they have dne some different things in their new gear, that even so many dont see it as big deal, it does make a difference, and I also expect from them more because...that is just the start of their new gear that enters the market.

I have seen footage that is pretty much a real test, and not just a promo , and the footage is rock solid. They have been using our gear for some of the footage, and other manufacturers gear as well, and it all looks very good, and not just promo corrected footage. In fact I have seen an endless long footage of the Movi pro that is on the Black arm going from one location to another , through motprways, fast driving, cornering, accelerations and decelerations , mounted in front of a car in the simplest way one can mount the black and it was amazng. The footage was speed up to more than X10 times , and you could not spot hardly any unstability .

From that I can tell that they have done some good work with the new gimbal range and spent a lot of time testing it.

So the very near future will saw us how well.

regards

Constantine i just wish your words will come true. Im not saying they are bad as I want something usable too when i need it but im not rich enough to buy 4 times so ill wait for real user experience and rather avoid 200usd discounts for preorders... and then hate myself maybe :)

never said the oposite, its good to wait . Im just laying down my own opinion from what I have seen so far and its pretty good.
But I dont have one in my hands. You know me. You know I can spot bits that ...well lets say not everyone can in the stabilization field.
thats my opinion so far of footage that I have seen , not being available in public. and I liked it.
I dont make a GB for Movi pro either LOL so.....
cheers :cornut:

Recommended as Mass will shift, but with a little planning for the eventuality during prep could theoretically having some markings that make it easy to flip/flop fast with dovetail on top and bottom of camera.

See to me that's really not workable. I find myself needing to over-sling and under-sling the rig from shot to shot and sometimes variations of the same shot. It's nice to be able to take 60 seconds, re-route two cables and your over-slung and visa versa.

Totally your call Steve - I hate composing a shot upside down and explaining to someone to flip it in post. I know that's normal for a lot of people but I'm oddly anal retentive about it, would rather take a few moments to recalibrate/balance than to compose upside down. :)

Understood, Dan.....Ever looked at the ACR Beast? You can invert it and the camera is right side up, with no re-balencing. I use that and the M15, both have their benefits. But the Movi Pro looks legit with all it's features. Just need to know that I can get the eye level shots without a lot of re-balencing. I saw a BTS picture of the Pro with a Ready Rig and it did look like you could slide the attach points lower on the hoop to get the rig higher.

There's also all sorts of benefits to attaching the readyrig (or any dual suspension system) to the mid point where the balance lies - it means that you apply equal pressure for tilt up and down, as well as reducing the amount of force required for tilting, meaning you aren't relying on your wrist strength and can use 'finger force' like with Steadicam. Cinemilled makes something bespoke for this called the 'Pro Ring'.

Ahhhh!

I get it now steve... great question - I feel like that might be possible with the movi pro based on an animated image I saw of it inverting... definitely worth looking at again.

Hoping so... that would be sweet.

Freefly founder Tabb is doing a live Q and A session on Nov 9... I'm gonna try to tune in

Personally I'm planning to "elect" the Mōvi pro as my first real gimbal purchase...

Brett, I understand that the attach point at the center is better for balance and therefore tilting, but I'm trying to figure out a quick way to get eye level shots with the movi pro and the ring, without re-balancing. I thought sliding the hand stops or attach points down would certainly help but if that messes with balance and tilting its a deal breaker. How does the Cinemills hoop deal with this?

The Black Arm in action!!! & Movi... Good to see Constantine!

Anyone have Build pics with the new Movi??

Thanks , you can see Tabb here showing it in various modes with camera on explaining stuff, including how to swap from alta to Black to handheld to whatever.

and quite a lot of other stuff. Q+A is a great option given to future customers, where they have their quetions answered live feed, and get to see the Movi pro.

you can aso see the Black set up at around 20.00 and 23.00.

well done Tabb and the freefly team.

In the video I saw follow focus motors. Is that a Movi product or 3rd party?
