  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New MacPro predictions? Hopes? Fears?

Anyone think we’ll get a sneak peek before the year is out? They did it with the iMacPro. There’s supposed to be an iPad refresh event this month.

With global anticipation of mMP availability within 14 months - it’s impressive that there have been no leaked testimonials of the mMP case construction, reports of a prototype 8K screen or even location of a new fully automated manufacturing plant.

In the case of the transhcan, design was also kept completely under wraps - right up until the fully robotic production line was commissioned in Austin.

With the ratcheting reciprocal import tax between the US & China - it would not surprise me if Apple negotiate bilateral exclusion before they announce mMP production.

Right now my guess is we get a preview before the end of the year, with official launch at WWDC. Shipping then or shortly after. I hope I am wrong and they release sooner.

You all heard that Apple integrated a JavaScript interpreter into the new iPhones' CPU? That's the kind of engineering approach that I hope will be aimed at the Mac Pro. But, to put things into perspective, the iPhone has never been assembled merely from off-the-shelf components.

But, I have to assume that Apple isn't letting itself lose sales in the short term for nothing. I really can't wait. And BTW, I am not even in the market for one. I really love the Mac mini.

One of Apple's critical failings has always been its desire to control the whole ecosystem, the hardware innovation that occurs outside Apple will always exceed what they can do with their own silicon.

To paraphrase Luke Skywalker:

"Amazing, every word you wrote here—is wrong."

=)

Please don't take this as an invite to a discussion. No need for that.

Apple's critical fail is that they think they know what is best for the customer and they don't like being a team player. Yes, innovate by all means, but don't tell us how we should be doing our jobs or try to force us to adopt "new" or "different" ways to doing things. They don't listen to our needs. Sometimes a faster horse really is the better choice.

Skate where the puck is going, not where it has been...BUT...be a team player and don't try to be the hero.

Surprised no one is talking about this. If you look on one of nvidia's RTX pages it clearly shows a Mac system. Can this really just be a mistake? Or a hint that RTX is coming to Mac, more specifically the next MacPro.

That, and the recent reports of RTX cards working just fine in OSX with boot screens without needing to be flashed. Something's definitely going on.

Rumor is that the Apple/AMD deal comes to an end in December.

I'd say oversight. Or rather, I don't think they expect people to identify the system in question.

If it was a tease, I don't think they'd opt to "show" two 24" LED Cinema Displays from 2010.

Pretty big oversight when there hasn’t been any official Nvidia hardware in Macs since 2012. If this was say Blackmagic, I could see them just using a pretty picture for the sake of it. This being on the official nvidia website makes you wonder.

I don't think that picture is pretty enough to go on BMD's site... =)

I guess the size of the oversight correlates to how dominant you feel the 'Mac presence' is in that picture. My guess is that the small dock and logo won't stand out to most people.

And for all we know... the person responsible for updating the webpage with images might be completely clueless to the finer aspects of Mac/Nvidia compatibility. It's just "someone who works there".

Yeah i saw that RTX page previously and didnt even notice the Apple logo. Probably just what the graphic design company who handles their website had on hand. "Need an image of some guy color grading."

Would love to see nVidia present in the next Mac Pro, if it ever ships, but I'll believe it when i see it.

Fingers crossed we get some news tomorrow!

If so, there's a chance it'll ship around April. If we don't hear anything, chances are they announce at WWDC in June and ship around then or in the fall of 2019...

Apple safes you an awful lot of money by postponing the introduction of the new MacPro to the year 3278, Windows and Linux users have a harder time, tonnes of new hardware releases almost on a daily base.

Apple TV : It can already do 4K pass through, and Atmos pass through.
I am guessing that Apple will wait until Oct 2019 (ie 2 year cadence) before releasing a new Apple TV that has the (TMSC 7nm+) A13x:
- So they can negotiate a good HDMI 2.1 components deal (which don't currently have good market penetration)
- So they can share their new family_friendly Apple content.
- So then can move off the expensive TSMC 7nm to (cheaper and smaller) 7nm+ SoC
- Because that GPU grunt probably isn't holding back TvOS development.
- Because they need more Atmos enabled receivers (people aren't switching to Apple TV 4k due to the high cost of digital decoding of Atmos material into existing Dolby surround systems that don't currently support Atmos)... Probably needs another year.

MMP: I read on Anandtech that Intel's scalable architecture incorporates an interchip fabric quite separate from the usual N socket connections on motherboards. That tech is available now, and could make the 2019 release window .. although I am hoping this is NOT what Apple meant by modular.

I still haven't seen any hints that the MMP will exclude x86. If the MMP doesn't have an Arm & x86 'flavour' - I wonder if Apple could convince Intel to licence them x86 emulation.

Apple Vortex core (A12X) @ 2.7GHz : Approx a 1.1 Watt TDP on TSMC 7nm : 159M transistors : 1.92mm^2

If Apple created an 'introductory' 64 Core SoC with just CPUs on TSMC 7nm+ (17% denser : 10% less wattage) : The SoC would take up 104mm^2 and use around 64Watts. (the A5X by comparison was 165mm^2). With a comparable compute performance to a $10k 28core Intel 8180, it would probably be a good enough value proposition for people to switch to an Apple SoC even if they had to emulate x86 (especially if Apple sold a 64 core Vortex chip for under a $1K).

My guess is that Apple are laying the foundation work in peoples minds for a transition. If they are already faster than 92% of all laptops this year .. how long before they surpass all laptops ?

And with Ample SoC space (even with 64 cores) on TSMC 7nm+, It would not surprise me if Apple went the APU route and finally showed us what the GPU team can do in the desktop space!
