  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro

Apple's Developer Conference is now only 2 weeks away, and it'll be interesting to see if they have anything to say about 4K. 4K monitors are still a missing piece of their current hardware line.
I'm kind of going crazy with thunderbolt display for color correction, my old color correction monitor's are a pain to connect to the nMP(the BM ultra studio 4k is cool and everything, but what's the point of a easy thunderbolt standard if i have to put it through a box that is larger then my entire computer). The current thunderbolt displays are a mix of aspect ratio's, hardware color calibrations, 8/10 bit modes and complex interfaces. What I want is a simple thunderbolt 2 color correction monitor - 10 bit, quadhd, able to use hardware color calibration and no complex cabling to some in between box.

Does anyone know a slick way to retrofit the cooling in the BM UltraStudio4K? If the cost is under $100 and can be done in under 3 hours I'm game. That fan is obnoxious.

OR - better yet, anyone selling the AJA 4K IO for under $1,200USD?

Cheers - #19

I feel you Patrick, if I had to guess I'd say Apple is the most likely vendor to fit your specs this year. I have been campaigning for TB2 as the logical successor to HDMI, eSATA and to some degree ethernet. I know the manufacturers love selling us new gear every other year, and since major improvements in key tech are typically a bit more spread out than that, they often use interconnect standards to keep the wheel turning. I understand the imperatives of modern capitalism, but when I/O conventions are used to accelerate replacement cycles it rankles the environmentalist in me - not to mention the financial ramifications.

Professional studio infrastructure is one thing, but for boutiques/one man bands/exhibition/etc TB2 could be viable for a decade. I toss at least $500 worth of cables every year and still have bins full of them - its a huge PITA. Its 2014, essentially everything we run over a cable is data in some form - sound, picture, binary data, metadata, etc. One cable to rule them all (at least until 2020 for crying out loud).

so new machine arrived and ram is all working only problem now is 10.9.3 :(

Crossing fingers itll be updated soon.

We had to stick with 10.9.3 and its issues.

Not a deal breaker for us.

this machine came pre installed with it as well as the last, it does seem really odd that apple have not done anything to fix it.

They can always blame the third-party software/hardware.

Apple tends to deliver with the latest OS.

Our issues with 10.9.3 are minuscule.

In Avid MC, Sapphire isnt playing back in real time without rendering.

Not a deal breaker.

hi Bob, would you mind telling me what configurations your Mac Pro is and what if any 3rd party equipment you are using -
this new one i recived is a nightmare!
i've spoken to apple and they recommended i return it, get a refund and wait 3 months which is a little crazy.
I tried fcpx and it was a little more stable but getting audio dropout issues

looks like the drop out was me being an idiot and over loading the thunderbolt channel

in my sonnet i had my areca card and red rocket - removed the RR card and drop out solved:)

no offense Patrick, but why does the size matter? Are your grading at Starbucks? I mean, it's not the size of a fridge.

Not gonna happen any time soon, especially not on a Mac.
For a pro CC you want a closed loop, based on a proper video signal (and a proper video monitor, no computer monitor) - no computer monitor signal or OS involved.

YOU did not overload your t-bold channel---the OLD RR card is the problem and just does not play at all with FCPx and the NewMacPro....RED is aware, and i don't expect a fix since this is just a dead end product.

So I have read through about the last 10-15 pages of this thread as I'm seriously considering a nMP for a client session I have in 10 days. I've been editing in CC 2014 on a rMBP (2012) and been happy enough. But after the Dragon upgrade, it just doesn't cut it anymore. Have most of the issues settled down? Seems like there aren't a lot of recent complaints.
What systems are people running, ie, which Mac Pro/version of OSX, and RAM amounts?
Trying to get in for as little as possible and wondering if the 3.7 GHz Quad core will be enough.
Thanks for any comments.

I wouldn't recommend the quad core. For the price point you'd benefit from an iMac and some TB accessories from the nMP savings. Once you go 6/8 core with decent amount of Ram and D500/700 its a better separation from iMac, but then again you're making a decent investment.
