  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro

you can't match the 16 gig ram with anything lower than it. i thought it was widely known. I have had issues with the computer not reading my ram sometimes though. I made sure the dims were securely positioned. I got the 8 gig dims from other world computing. anyone else have that issue?

Yes, first install only 48gb was showing up. I pulled them out and reinstalled, and all 64 showed up. That was 2 months ago and it hasn't had any issues past that.

OK, Sorry guys. Didn't meant to give bad info about RAM. Not so sure why the system doesn't like mis-matched RAM, since it's allowed within the platform spec. It just drops the RAM interface from quad to dual channel. Yes, a performance hit, so perhaps that's why Apple is locking this off. Although, they're not locking it off because the base config Mac Pro ships with 12GB via 2x4GB and 2x2GB modules. Wonder if it doesn't like mismatch between 16GB's and others or if there's other mis-matches between the Apple (Hynix) modules and those from OWC or elsewhere.

Hmmm...

Asynchronous timings may be listed as supported by the board but it does not work most of the time with the memory controller in the CPU's. The different ram densities have different primary and secondary timing requirements. That is why you cant mix and match them otherwise the ram controller can't synchronize across the bus . Asynchronous timing support rarely worked right even before I7 Gen 1 but definitely hasn't most of the time since.

I just received my 8 core Mac Pro ... it's so nice doing full resolution r3d realtime. I know there's a lot of debates out there, but running r3d at 5k on a new monitor realtime really shows the progress both apple and red have made. I'm really happy with the purchase and the progress the industry has made, is a great time to be a reduser.

So what are your thoughts on dual monitor set-ups for the NMp? We've just had two delivered; one is primarily for Smoke and will be single RGB monitor, but the second will double up for edit (Avid/ Premiere) and grading (Resolve) and so dual monitors seem favourite for that. We have PVM25a's for SDI monitoring, so the RGB monitor doesn't need to be exactly colour critical (although the closer the better, obviously).

What are you guys using for RGB monitoring, how do you have it connected and how happy are you with your set-up?

Also I'm kind of curious about this thing, although I'm not sure when it's going to ship. Any ideas?

Just got the same and could not agree more....I am still amazed how small and silent it is....and does so much...so well...

That LG is not 4k...was looking as well, should be out any day....I just got the 24" dell and really like it so far......very nice image...

Thanks Paul. Yeah It's not 4k, it's more the form factor that appeals to me since it's going to be my RGB display. The biggest bugbear with it is that in our set up the cable run from the rack is about 5 metres, so it's too long for a standard TB cable and because the HDMI in the MacPro is only 1.4 that's not an option either. An optical TB cable seems like the only (fairly expensive) option.

Does anyone know the performance of the NMP basis 4C/D300?
I have looked online, to search some information about, even on barefeat, but I only find some information regarding the configurations 6c/8c/12c with D500 or D700.
In particular I was interested to understand the value in fps playback of material ARRIRAW, blackmagic 2.5K, F65,R3D epic etc.
Also, anyone knows which are the render times of these formats to ProRes 1080/4:2:2 dailes?

Mac Pro - Beauty and the Beast

If any of you have not yet check out the barefeats article we were featured in comparing our 5,1 Mac Pro to the 6,1 Mac Pro (we also supply)

http://barefeats.com/tube16.html

We just gave them our 6,1 3GHZ D700 1TB SSD 64GB Mac pro as well to compare against.

everything i have seen and read about that configuration has compared it to the top of the line imac and the imac is pretty much a clear winner (and much cheaper)...the non upgradeable D300 is a real problem....everything else (chip, memory, SSD) is replaceable but you are stuck with GPUs that just can't handle what you want them to do....or at least not much better then the imac which is cheaper and comes with a display....

I do not think the 780m is better than two d300 to make the render on davinci. The tests on the Barefeat confirm how superior are the two gpu in opencl software

http://www.barefeats.com/tube17.html

So, where did you read otherwise? Rather, I was interested to quantify the performance of 4c/d300 than the higher configurations.
I was hoping to have more informations about, maybe expressed on fps instead of just an approximation with the imac. It seems to me that within the NMP mac 4c/d300 basis, for no more than the € 300 rmbp (750m) and the top imac top, it is a better solution for transcoding (I don't take care of the Imac's monitor). But what times how should exactly expect? This is what I'd like to understand.
For example, the transcoding of material arriraw is in real time? of red epic 5k in 10fps? or 15fps? maybe 20fps? I would like to make me idea.

Get the D700 GPUs. Get at least 32GB of RAM. CPU cores and flash memory capacity are the place to save if budget is tight.

People in our line of work should avoid the D300s or the D500s. Period.

Cheers - #19

Okay, but because I currently can not afford even a 4c/D700 Buying a 4c/D300, would be better than buying an rmbp or an iMac on top?

I'm kinda in the same boat. I think the base model nMP in this case is better because you can always upgrade it down the line. The iMac is pretty much sealed shut save for the RAM

5k in davinci will give you problems with anything up to 4gb vram...i know that form experience...that is without any additional nodes....yes you might be able to do something, but it will be slow and painful.....the 4c D300 won't improve on that at all....4c D500 might be a little better....
FCPX needs less and is fine on the top of the line iMac but again with 5K and a couple of effects you start to pull your hair out....
a realistic minimal 5K system is the 6 core with d500 but at that point the extra price of the d700 is the better investment because the CPU can be upgraded later....the GPU can not.....
the iMac (top, maxed out) is great and a really good value and eats HD for breakfast but 5k is a different story...

Have to agree with Paul. The D700 6GB cards are the only way to go and for the first time a steal from apple. These cards should cost 2000-3000 more than the D300's but apple is offering them at only 1000 more.

These are faster versions of the W9000 cards which are 3000 each. So 1k more for 6k worth of cards.

We sell out every week of the 20-30 2.7 12 core D700's we get in and still have D300 from months ago and stopped ordering them from apple for resale. Last week we actually switched out 4 D300/D500 mac pros from a studio that realized they needed the D700
