  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro

IMO getting the D700 GPUs vs the D300s or D500s is step one. If you still have budget, take the RAM to 32GB.

FWIW, if 4K post is the goal, students or otherwise, you're going to want at least 6 cores.

This seems like the right approach to me - save money on the number of cores at the beginning but max the gpus since we can upgrade the processor down the road as they get cheaper (as they always do fairly quickly) but since the gpus are custom for the macpro we are locked into the apple versions unless some other vendor comes out with that form factor. It does seem that apple is pretty agressively fair on the GPU prices - probably because they made a substantial buy and also know that they would get more criticism if they gouge us on proprietary GPUs.

Seems like ram is easily upgradeable from multiple sources.

the apple store says that the shipping availability is april ...

did they stopped shipping it ?
does anyone knows why ?

thanks

Backorder. There are people that have ordered them that are receiving them but the list is long enough that they can't make them fast enough just yet. It's just backorder.

Mine just arrived today!!!

Originally ordered on 12/19/13.

Here is what it came with:

• 3.5GHz 6-core with 12MB of L3 cache
• 16GB (4x4GB) of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC
• 1TB PCIe-based flash storage
• Dual AMD FirePro D700 GPUs with 6GB of GDDR5 VRAM each

So it won't play silky and smooth in better performance mode 6k in a 2k or 4k timeline ? .. That really sucks. My laptop can do it for about 10 minute before the CPU starts to cook.
You'd think a 12 core would do it all day every day.
I know it won't play 6k full res , but half res you'd think it would.

Mark I got my Mac Pro last nite. 8 core 32 gb ram and d700 dual. Redcine x plays back my scarlet footage silky smooth at 3k. At 4k it plays almost silky smooth. If I wait a few seconds it does. If not it sort of starts stopping as bar loads. I am happy with the results!

I am loading up some files from my last shoot and playing them back... So far my 5k HD files shot at 6:1 are playing back at 1/2 res real time. SUPER STOKED.

I'd love to hear more details as they come. You have the configuration that I'm thinking of getting.

12 core
64 GB RAM
1 TB flash
2 D700s

I recently finished a 4K project using FCP X and it felt like I was editing DVCPRO HD footage. In other words, it had no problem at all playing and cutting native R3Ds from my Scarlet. If only LG would release the monitor that it keeps bragging about!

Eggcellent! LG will be releasing that monitor around the holiday season. Their panel is in low production stages for sampling to monitor makers and should be mass produced by late Summer.

Does this mean we can build a hackintosh with 64GB RAM?

If you're proficient with CPU swaps then the 4 core is great for getting in the door. I actually grabbed a few bare bones D700 machines and swapped to 1TB SSD, 64GB and preparing for a 1690V2 10 Core soon. There's some retailers that have a few in stock every now and then. I ordered from Mac Mall and it shipped same day. They were down to 2 machines in that config with zero 6, 8 or 12 core available and basically nothing else with D700's. That's the key.

Are the SSDs user swappable?

Yes, but the only place to get the proper SSD is from Apple right now. There are third parties who have announced that they will have SSDs for the new Mac Pro. Probably still a few to several months out from that though. I would look to guys like OWC for this -- they're one of the few who have announced such a product. Many new notebooks and compact systems are moving to PCIe flash storage, but the industry is currently a mess in terms of standardizing on physical connections and form factors.

Thanks. I don't see myself upgrading as I only run the system, apps, and music off the internal drive. If OWC was smart and could somehow cram in a second SSD in there that would be lovely.

In the meantime I have the Areca thunderbolt 2 RAID array coming midweek along with 8x3tb WD black drives. Should be a fairly zippy setup.

IMO, I think Apple made a small goof here. They could have helped everyone out a bit by eliminating two of the TB ports and allocating PCIe bandwidth a bit differently. Added a second PCIe storage connection alongside GPU #2 and we could have doubled our internal storage and speed as an option.

OWC isn't going to put a second SSD in there, but there's nothing stopping them from making SSDs with more capacity. There's actually quite a bit of room to work with there and the system could accommodate an SSD more than 4X the physical size of what Apple is shipping. Even with cheaper and lower density NAND chips, someone like OWC could theoretically offer an SSD with 2TB capacity and similar speed. And I think they will probably have to do something to that effect in order to entice people to buy.

NAND flash development has been rather stagnant over the past few years until very recently and big jumps are being made right now. We're going to start seeing exponential increases to solid state storage over the next few years, just as we once saw with hard drive capacities and CPU MHz/GHz speeds. A couple more generations down the road and that 1TB internal SSD is going to become 18TB for about the same money. External boxes with hard drives in them for relatively fast, high-capacity storage are going to disappear from the desktop at some point.

Even with the current generation of NAND flash and SSD controllers, it wouldn't be any special trick to put 2~4TB+ of storage in an iPad or similar tablet… If it weren't so cost prohibitive and leaning toward the side of overkill for the device's purpose.

I still remember my first week with a MB Air that used solid state as primary storage - virtually silent, fast, longer battery life, made the whole unit lighter, etc.

This following article summarises a process could bring stacked FGPA, DRAM or even Flash withough resorting a hard wired vertical connection between the layers (which required a new specialist type of stack technology).

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/0..._up_with_alternative_to_through_silicon_vias/

The proposed mechanism is (ring inductors near to each other on different layers) using conventional fabrication technology - and has already reached 128 layers prototypes.

Flash is scheduled to be replaced by one of one or two technologies. I posted somewhere on it, the last one is a faster smaller cheaper static drama process. We need something soon. The limitations we face in hq digital imaging designs are a bit because of it. If the new technology were here a BM could do 50 fes at resolution, even 100fps record, and sram FPGA replacement hopefully eventually.

Antony, that induction coil interlayer linking is a nice compromise, but I imagine the coils themselves are going to have a space impact, and I don't know what interlayer spacing they are using. The reality is that somebody needs to crystal latice build 3d circuits with no altering as such. That will greatly expand densities.

I think this was the one they thought would replace flash by now:

I think this might be the one I posted about:

Anyway, it turns out only the 6 core and above are available here, starting at around $5000 US.

The sense of entitlement to our money for nothing by companies is incredible, and that of their devotes that are asking to pay more.
