  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro

I need to see how this plays out and what revisions are made for gen 2. Till then I'm happy with my current 12 core.

The Gen 2 hardware will literally be next gen if the specs of this current model are anything to go by. Broadwell Xeons (8-18 cores), Thunderbolt 3/DisplayPort 1.3, PCIe 4, and the awesomeness of DDR4 with 128GB of RAM will put the Mac Pro on par with traditional PC workstations.

Any guesses as to when the new faster 32GB dimms will be released?

That will be a while. Probably in the next 4 to 6 months, we should start seeing some newer DRAM chips hitting the markets and overall speeds will be similar. This will bring us 32GB modules that compare similarly with the current 16GB ones. It should also allow for faster 16GB modules than what we have now. To gain both the speed and push capacity to 32GB, I would say at least a year, possibly never. Seriously. DRAM is shifting to DDR4 and DDR5 in the coming year or so when Intel releases their next platform and further advances to DDR3 based modules will not be a high priority.

The next time someone repeats the old cliche that they can build a PC for half the price of a Mac, feel free to point them here:

It turns out that an equivalent PC costs approximately 20% more than the fully spec'd 12 core Mac and 33% more than a stock configuration... this price doesn't include the labor to build the PC either.

That's how ppl go about confusing the average joe, tell me why you need a w9000. Why can't AMD not tell us the real specs of the D700.why not tell us how the D700 compares to the R290X in open cl performance or say a Titan. Be statisfied with your mac. Comparison is lame.

But you never know. Technology is a funny business, and sometimes further advances do come back around.

For example: We used to use SSDs all the time as kids. Nintendo Entertainment System used SSDs for their games and you could save progress on certain titles. It was great technology back then, no spinning media and we banged the hell out of those game cartridges without issue. Just blow a little dust out and you were good to go.

Now SSDs are back after all those years and we love them, both in our computers and as the mags used to record the images we shoot.

There are so many different angles we can look at this Mac Pro vs. PC thing and each point of view has a different purpose and result. However, there are a couple simple facts to consider:

* Apple has a very impressive little computer here. The design and build quality are astounding. On a specific component for price comparison, you're not going to build a PC for the same price and definitely not for cheaper. Can't even match the multiple TB2 ports to start with.

* We can indeed build PC systems cheaper that are comparable in many ways, even superior/ faster in some ways, perhaps a better fit for many users…

If you want a single-processor Xeon workstation that seems to be tuned to the nines and a decent dual-GPU offering (not revolutionary by any means, just a good attempt at GPUs), good connectivity by way of Thunderbolt 2 and USB as well as fast, but small, internal storage, this thing is amazing. Pricing is very good for what it is. Pricing is not so good if you are considering what it is not. If you can get by without ECC memory, without the [relatively] huge transaction I/O on the internal system busses, and 6 or fewer cores, then a PC with a nice 6-core high-end desktop CPU can be assembled for a significant savings.

IMO, the key is the transaction I/O on the internal system busses. For pixel pushers like us; late model CPUs, bomber GPUs and plenty o' RAM are in the mix on any platform (Mac, Win, Lin). No matter how spectacular the individual components might be, or how many Titans you can stuff in the box, that data still has to get passed around. Moreover; legacy code, dumbed down I/O protocols to support components from hundreds of vendors and other accommodations in managing a diverse ecosystem add up.

I run a lot of 3d apps for rendering. And they light up every single core. There is also noticeable speed at video decoding as well with 12 core systems. Most of he time I am multitasking. Rendering in AE and compressing h264 video at the same time. If you feel a 4 or 6 core is fine for oh. You might as well get an iMac. I deal with still files that are layers and up to 15000 pixels in with that I can't open on anything but a MacPro. Or if they opened it was invisible to work them.

I also wish I could daisy chain 5 MacPros into one super computer. ; )

i hope it's okay to ask here in a Red User Forum , i ordered my MP Standart Config (only the D300 are now the D500) and i will Upgrade the Ram for myself up to 32GB

so i would have a Guad Core , D500 32GB Ram MP - should be fine to work with the BMCC RAW Files right ? or would you say the CPU is not good enough ?

Best Wishes From germany (wehere you can't ask questions like that because of the hard Apple bashing )

That is unfortunately a pretty stupid comparison, since you'd have to be silly not to go with 290-series Radeons if you don't need ECC and you can settle for 4 GB instead of 6 GB pro GPU, for a fifth of the price. The GPUs in the Mac Pro certainly are not W9000s, since they (quite likely) not have ECC RAM, and are heavily throttled due to the poor thermal budget of the Mac Pro.

Or, if you actually want performance and you are not married to AMD, you can get two Titans instead, and have both certifed GPUs, great CUDA performance and the 6 GB VRAM for a third of the price. On that alone you can save close to 4000 USD, and end up signifcantly cheaper than the Mac Pro, including labor.

Played with the 4-Core today at the apple store. I'll give it this...even the stock config is fairly peppy. Fingerprints are gonna be a nightmare.

LOL well that could easily be fixed by wrapping it in a big tube sock :)

I cant see why not?

Even a basic MP 5,1 with decent Firewire drives BMCC RAW files run fine.

Not sure how close it is, but my Mac Pro order status has changed from "Available to ship: January" to "Processing."
