  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro today ..?

Can't be Mac pro...

Apple pulls another rabbit out of their hat... Yet another exclusive first-to-market deal with Intel. Nehalem 2.93GHz Rock on!

The new GPU's for the new Mac Pro are:

NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB

SuX0rs! :angry01: Seriously, who at Apple is in charge of these decisions??? They need to be hit with something really hard right now. GT-120 512MB?
WTF???

I'm not used to buy Mac Pro, have been on laptops for quite a while. Usually, what are the options to upgrade the GPU down the road?

Regarding the RAM, I was reading that these workstations work better in multiple of 3, anybody care to elaborate on this? I was looking into getting the 8GB (4x2) option, but that would mean I'd have to add another 4GB to get it to 12GB? What kind of performance hit one can expect?

I'm wondering if the new RAID card works with bootcamp and can also put the computer in sleep mode. I like it that its cable less now.

RAID card does not work with bootcamp. It's still the same RAID card. Also has no option of external connectivity. Avoid the Apple RAID card.

If you're going for a new Mac Pro, get the ATI 4870 card, unless you need to connect more than 2 monitors, but then you need 2 or more video cards in a system that only has 4 PCIe slots.

Excuse me, but I thought the Nehalem Xeons were supposed to be Hyperthreading-capable and technically be 8-cores per chip, granted four of those cores being virtual. Is that not the case with these?

Also, from what I understand about Apple's next OS "Snow Leopard", as far as graphics cards go, you can use whatever you want, PC or Mac graphics card, doesn't matter. Apple is supposedly doing something with the driver structure so that there no longer needs to be dedicated versions of hardware. I could be totally wrong about this but that's just what I heard about it. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Still, even if that's not the case, you could always use a Windows version of an ATI 4870X2 or another card for PC work through Bootcamp but you need to have your default Mac videocard in there for when you switch over to Mac OSX as OSX will default to that supported card.

Yep, from Apple's site:

The virtue of virtual cores.
The new Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processors support Hyper-Threading, which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core. So an 8-core Mac Pro presents 16 virtual cores that are recognized by Mac OS X. Performance is enhanced because Hyper-Threading enables the processor to take better advantage of the execution resources available in each core.

Ahhh... it all makes sense now. I was wondering why the lower end model was only 4 cores. I wonder how 4 real cores and 4 virtual cores will compare to 8 real cores in my "old" Mac Pro?

Also, keep in mind that the ATI 4870 takes up 2 PCIe slots.

Yes, but the spacing for the primary graphics slot is double-wide, so it doesn't cover any other slots.

PCI Express expansion:

One PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot
Two PCI Express 2.0 x4 slots

?!?!?

NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB of GDDR3 memory, PCI Express 2.0, one Mini DisplayPort, and one dual-link DVI port

ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 512MB of GDDR5 memory, PCI Express 2.0, one Mini DisplayPort, and one dual-link DVI port

Multiple graphics card configurations available with two, three, or four NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 cards

For a newest multimedia workstation.

Sad, Apple....really sad...
