  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro Announced at WWDC! - It's OFFICIAL!

Hey Jeff, I used to have one of those O2s on my desk, but w/ the older logo cube :coolgleamA:
Used it for Alias (Power Animator) at Sony back in the day. Loved it and the Octane.
Super stable, I recall running one box heavily for over 3 months w/out crashing.
I finally had to reboot it due to tiny memory leaks degrading the performance.

I'm pretty psyched about the new mac pro, it's a polished aluminum enclosure - not plastic like some claim.
The thermal design is brilliant and similar to the one TYAN used w/ their mini cluster boxes a few years back.

The dual video cards do appear to be upgradable/replaceable...

...and FYI, Open CL has been supported in Resolve since version 9!
Yes you will miss out on the craptastic noise reduction plugin (made by Nvidia),
but with OpenFX support, just grab the neatvideo filter (which also supports Open CL)

Done and Done

Seriously, this is way better then I expected.
Dual GPU's that support THREE 4K displays out of the box and a local volume that beats 1GB through-put.
Massive flexibility, external everything (besides the CPU/GPU/RAM) on buses that can be paired/multiplexed as needed for bandwidth.

All coming from a tiny unit that's less then 10" high by 7" in diameter!

Brilliant

Hehe.. The O2 wasn't a bad concept, and it was fairly successful considering the downturn of SGI at the time. It fared far better than their Intel based offerings, but SGI killed those intentionally once they realized they outdid their own MIPS based workstations. Too bad, those were some of the nicest PC systems ever made, both at the time and for a handful of years after. Unfortunate they never just jumped in and ran with it, actually enabled all the hardware features like the video I/O.

I still have an O2 around here somewhere. The last SGI workstation I bought myself was an Octane MXE... My favorite of all of them was still my old purple R10K based Indigo^2 Max Impact. Loved that system, it and my two Mac G5 Quad towers are the 3 most reliable systems I've ever owned.

Little bird told me GPUs can be upgraded/replaced.

I really hope this is true. In a world where I upgraded my red one to an epic and can now upgrade my epic to a dragon, I should be able to upgrade my damn graphics cards.

I know a lot of people that will love it though. Just feels like the iPhone business model. Every two years, gotta buy a new one. Yuck.

Very curious what happens with the rocket x now.

On the bright side, I would assume this means the UHD apple TV or 4k Cinema Displays are coming.

Oh heck.

*checks cupboard*

O2, Indigo, Indigo 2, Indy, Crimson, Onyx (IR of course!), Octane…

I have a big cupboard :-)

Off topic but... the SGI o2+ was great- rock solid and ran Poweranimator and early Maya. It was actually in a serious car accident where the car was written off and the o2 and raid array were fine. Finished my first showreel on that thing... after the crash.

After wading through this and other MacPro threads it seems a lot of folks are assuming there will only be one model/build of this. That doesn't make sense to me nor does it match with Apple's past history. As far back as I can remember, you could alway make choices in processor arrangement (4, 6, 8, 12 cores) and processor speed, hard drives, etc. There will be options.

I swear Dyson designed this thing....

I'd love to see a Rocket designed to not be a PCIe form factor unit left for us to put in our own box, but a nice external box/ unit itself with dual TB2 connectors.... Just thinking out loud here.

While they are at it - it would not hurt to shove in two slots for the REDMAGs and REDMAG MINIs... :reddevil:

Good to see that you have had the privilege of knowing the price of the Mac Pro unlike the rest of us... Seriously jealous ATM, do you mind sharing?

:sifone: Peter

its apple... i dont have to know the price to know i could build a better hack for cheaper

Haha, you're pulling my chain, right? You see they're only getting those transfer rates by running 240 TB RAID 0(!).

No, TB and even TB2 is not close to a true RAID 50 over SAS. Bonkers Apple isn't allowing even one expansion port here.
i am getting 600+ R/W raid5 on my pegasus R6 12TB and that is with hard drives.....

Where's the handle?
