  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New lightweight rod support bracket

As I understand it, there is anodizing, and hard anodizing. The hard version is what I think Michael is talking about. We hard anodized the remote pan/tilt mount for TITANIC because it was going into seawater. I think hard anodizing builds up like paint, so the rods would have to be under cut to account for it. Regular anodizing would as Nate says, start to wear off pretty quickly. So I figure that bare aluminum is the way to go as the rods aren't likely to kick light into a scene since they're usually hidden behind a matte box.

The kit came in while I was out of town on a shoot. I just installed it and I like it a lot. Now, Douglas, when can we take a peek at the other thing you are working on?

I just received my kit here in Tokyo! I have both 19mm studio and 15mm stuff, so it will be great for handheld work. Thanks for everything! Looking forward to your other items!

Thanks guys.

I've got my rig down to 21.5 pounds, including two 90wh batteries, Long Valley top handle and drive isolation plate, drive, 5.6" LCD, LW front support and 15" rods, 17-55 Nikon with Nikon GDX mount, grip, and 4x4 matte box and JBK follow focus. I think I can take another pound or so off it by lightening my 5.6 LCD mounting set up - that short arm is heavy.

The camera handles like an Arri 16SR now - nothing underneath except a tripod quick release plate.

I should have the handle/drive isolation system up for sale next week, with photos posted in the next few days. All black anodized and powder coated, very sleek, lightweight, extremely tough, and inexpensive.

Looking great Doug. I have a question. I'm assuming that the rod mount does *not* interfere with the RED bottom plate, etc. Am I assuming correctly? I mean this in the sense that we don't have to take off your mount to use the underside of the RED for mounting, whether it be with the ET Bridge plates, etc. Thanks.

I think from the pictures and video, it's pretty clear it doesn't directly interfere with anything attached to the bottom.

The lightweight support doesn't extend below the bottom of the camera, so it doesn't interfere with the RED bottom plate or 15mm/19mm bases. So you can leave it on all the time and only use it when you go for a super light hand held rig, or for Steadicam, etc. Don't have to remove it to put anything on the bottom of the camera.

Thanks for all the support for this . . . support!

Hi,
great stuff! Do you think it will work with RR followfocus and 15 mm RR mattebox?

Yes its a 15mm lightweight support setup so the RR follow focus will indeed work (PM me if you want a RRFF) as will any lightweight 15mm accessory.

I know it should be compatible but I'd like to know if someone used the bracket with a RR follow focus.

Sent a PM.

I am using the RR FF and the RR Mattebox. Make sure to get 2 sets of the 2.5" extensions.

When using a short lens, the 7.5" rods interfere with getting the mattebox close and the single 2.5" rods are too short for both FF and MB. Two 2.5" sets should be just right. Mine are on the way.
