  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED spirit

RED spirit

In the spirit of the holidays I love the idea of Kelly being the star of the RED holiday greeting. A picture of our favorite RedHead in festive garb would be a welcome sight. Anyone at RED have a camera...

I'm impressed, but not for the reason some may think. I think the demo showed understanding of a problem solved: Dynamic range of the audio input.
I have one of those native old style 3 chip native widescreen cameras with multiple digital audio channels. When I connect my shotgun mics to the camera, I have to insert a 25db pad and run the gain 8 o'clock to avoid clipping with voice. I would have to add more pad for something actually LOUD. It's nice to see that I may not need any external pads for my new cameras. If that was part of your point, I got it.

Kelly, evidently you have quite a fan club. You do have a sweet smile and your voice IS very nice (we spoke the other day...you may or may not remember...Red #811) but I have no desire to see you exploited on the internet.

Ok guys, you can throw your fries now.

C'mon, Kelly ... you can be the Kiki Stockhammer of the New Millennium!

Haha. Kiki was a babe. Or at least I seem to remember she was in something like '93. I really liked that set of VT transitions that had nude silhouettes of Kiki. Classic.

Audio Dynamic Range

Audio Dynamic Range

Yup. With 24 bit sampling, RED-ONE has Dynamic Range to burn!

You could think of this as RAW audio.....

Well it also depends on the quality of the preamps and A/D converters.

What he said. 24bit is nice for sure but if you also have some decent preamps in there, well the you've got something really cool going on. A fantastic camera with great audio recording ability. That's a combo not too many get right.

Should we assume Red uses a straightforward audio system, input -> (optional mic preamp) -> A/D ? No limiter or compressor? Those have never been mentioned and I assume they aren't there, but it's good to confirm. If there is limiting/compression that can complicate dynamic range testing.

I was hoping they would have decent limters built in that can be enabled or disabled, perhaps in the menu. Hopefuly there will be no cheap auto gain control features or harsh limiters. A gentle limter that keeps dialogue peaks under control would be nice. Obviously for high end work, double system will be used and most likely all that ends up going to camera is a reference track.

The internal audio as enabled is 4 independent channels at 48KHz 24 bit sampling. Recorded as uncompressed data.

That's just kick ass. The bike is pretty cool too. Any more info? And I vote for Kelly singing or whistling as the next sound bite clip... :detective2:
