  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New lcd monitor from smallhd

That type of connector would not work with the DP1, because of how the ports are recessed. (in an effort to reduce the cable distance above the monitor)

I think a slim, low-profile HDMI cable would be a happy medium. The one in the pictures i used is a honkin HDMI cable.

what about a male to female adapter followed by a right angle hdmi?

might be too much of a "lego" solution for some but it's digital so there should be no signal degradation.

Nice product,a s soon as we get the specs i would certainly consider pre-ordering, contrast ration, angle of view, comparable to RED-PRO. Don't care for SDI. Keep up the good work!!!

just checked most of the specs are on the web site - which is a very well designed site so i am beginning to like this product

their downloadable data sheet states:
pixel pitch: .1515 (h & v)
lcd brightness: 300cd/m2
contrast ratio: 500:1
viewing angle: 178 deg

Yes, complete menus,

And that HDMi thing would probably work. Thanks

Dale

what about brightness: in the specs it is half of what the red lcd has? Any one compared, does the LED help... bright sun performance

Yes, I was really excited about this until I realized the brightness is half of the RED 5.6" lcd and 1/3 of the RED 7" LCD. Does it have anything to improve outdoor visibility?

I think we need to wait and hear from the folks that bought the first monitors on the preorder special. I'm ready to pull the trigger if they give it a good enough review.

yeah...where are the reviews, either good or bad...

has anyone recieved their Smallhd DP1 yet, they were supposed to ship weds? any news? i have emailed them and had no reply.

first smallhd dp1 review here...

hey everyone,

i just got my dp1 from smallhd today. everything arrived on time and as advertised. i emailed dale with several questions and all of his answers were prompt and forthright. now onto the product...

but first...my setup and expectations.

i have the red evf and the original 5.6" red lcd. the red lcd has always been great but lately i find myself pulling focus off of it more and more and the size of it just requires me to keep about 1-2 feet away for critical focusing, not to mention the strict viewing angles. i've never used the larger red lcd so i can't make any comparisons to it but i figured so long as the weight stays under control, a little bigger (dp1's 9 inches of viewing) might be a little better. and then there's the price difference too.

overall, i like the dp1 and it really succeeds for my needs. build quality is solid. it has s-video, component, vga and hdmi inputs so i, like most of you, opted to run hdmi from my red. earlier today, i ran a signal from my mac directly into the vga and it looked great. it looked so great i used it as a 2nd monitor for a while while it worked on my mac. i have to say that the hdmi didn't look quite as good. maybe it was the nature of the imagery, cg stuff versus natural image. see my attached photo (sorry about the iphone quality). the hdmi definitely lacked some of the smooth milkyness (the good kind of milky) that the red lcd has and the dp1 definitely produces some noticeable banding too but so does the red lcd to a lesser extent. i'm trying to scare up an hdmi to vga converter cable to isolate the quality difference i see-it could just be the hdmi connection circuitry or scaling in the dp1.

speaking of scaling...the menus are excellent. there are 4 presets that each contain things like hue, contrast, brightness, sharpness and scaling. the scaling allows you to see the entire histogram and red frame info which is great. once you set it, it remembers settings even after you power down. there's even picture-in-picture controls for multiple inputs and menu opacity as well as placement. i only wish that scale settings could be set differently for each preset and recalled quickly for those who don't need histogram info or even lookaround but that's a minor gripe.

now back to image quality. i found i was able to adjust focus accurately from at least 3-4 feet away. out-of-the-box contrast seems a little harsh but i'm positive i can adjust it to my liking with a little fiddling. colors are accurate and detail is good. i find myself preferring the detail on the red lcd but i also find my head about a foot away from that one so by the time i'm 3 feet out from the small lcd, i can't see any detail. the dp1 holds up at about 5 feet away. i would assume that the large red pro lcd accomplishes this too but at 3x the price. the red lcd has 2x the brightness but when i raised the brightness up on the dp1 to match, it didn't compromise the detail or the blacks. when viewed straight on, i still prefer the red lcd for adjusting exposure by eye but that is from straight on. the viewing angle on the dp1 is far superior to my red lcd in both the vertical and horizontal extremes. there is a slight dimming and color adjust when you view off angle but it sure beats the funky inverse artifacts you get from the red lcd sometimes.

even with the battery attached, the weight was light enough to work well with my small red arm so that's a definite plus. i think this would make for a great camera stabilizer or jib monitor when not being used on sticks. it might be too a little big for handheld but i'm sure it could be mounted far enough from the operator's head to still be effective.

now for the negatives...
there seemed to be some occasional slight white around certain contrasty edges but i was able to decrease that by playing with the menus a bit. the menus are small buttons on the back so feeling for them and navigation takes a little getting used to-not something you want to acquaint yourself with in front of the director so be prepared. all the connectors run out of the top and there is no digital flip but the small battery power cable and flexible hdmi and component cables (all provided by smallhd) make for pretty low profile mounting.

my only other negative is battery life. i charged up the battery for several hours before powering up. it was orange and then went to green for at least 3 hours so it must have been full but when i powered on, it seemed to only get about an hour or so of runtime. i'm charging overnight to verify. however, it's no big deal to me as i always planned to use a d-tap cable from my red battery for power anyway. dale mentioned that these connector/adapters would be available soon and he has even included a cable that runs from the dp1 to the battery so i suspect a simple d-tap adapter will work.

the screen is rather shiny so it collects a lot of finger prints and glare unfortunately. i haven't done a test outside but i'm assuming a sunshade is in order. i didn't order one from smallhd so i'll probably rig one up once i try it outside.

overall it seems like a great little monitor for a red and many other camera systems. you cannot beat native 720p at 9" with these specs at that price currently. maybe red will outdo this price-performance with new scarlet/epic viewing options but for anyone that needs a big, portable monitor in the next 6 months, the dp1 is the best deal i know of.

feel free to ask me any questions if you're unsure about purchasing this great little monitor.

thanks

craig
