  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

this has probably been thought of before. i'm sure it would have been but just incase it hasn't then i thought i'd post :D

ok so build 16 boots in about 60 seconds...

would it be possible to have a "sleep mode" like on a laptop? where it's all booted up but it's not actually on. then when you want to shoot you hit a button and BAM! wakes up and you're ready to shoot in about 2 seconds.. you'd drain some battery life while in sleep mode but it'd be worth it i think.

this actually might even be already on the red. i don't know coz i don't have one..

have a nice day
pat

yup.. long time request, and its somewhere on the list of things to try and implement, no promises though.

i actualy thought of one way to take it a step further but it would be impossible to implement it in red one. maybe epic or scarlet..

just so you don't have to reboot everytime you replace the battery. have an inbuilt (or secondary) battery especialy for the sleep mode..

it might give you 5 min of sleep mode operation while changing the battery and gets recharged every time you put on a new batery..

would be really helpful in some circumstances

yup we already thought of that one too... :)

How about gold plating so if their is ever a nuclear holocaust we will have something to pawn.

No promises...deal breaking, though for my usage, and I have to make a decision when my number comes up... Please, Jarred...Can you at least give me (us) an estimate : likely or unlikely implementation in future Red one build ?

Perhaps, there is no need to drain some battery anyway, if a non volatile RAM is used. What I read about I think it was Gigabite, the pc mainboard manufacturer, that made this very expensive RAM (several times the ordinary one), a couple of years ago.
It was an expensive RAM for a pc, but it would be perfect for a videocamera. The technology must be cheaper now.

If your basing your decision to buy the camera or not buy the camera based on there being a sleep mode, I would hold off for now... there are a lot of higher priority things on the list unfortunately, and it wont happen anytime soon.. no estimates, because we havnt even gotten to the estimation stage for that yet.

sorry man.. but we will let you know when that time comes.

Ok, that's the answer I needed, if not the one I had wished :-( thanks for caring to reply, anyway. Think I shall have to wait... too bad

Seriously? It would be a sweet feature for sure, but definitely doesn't seem like a dealbreaker to me. Btw, a 3rd party is currently working on a battery plate for the Red that will give you time (20+ seconds) to swap out batteries, so you don't have to power down your Red.

Chazmo, that's the sort of thing I suggested in an earlier thread, so you could basically leave it powered the whole time by switching batteries. Only drawback of course is you'd need a load of batteries, not practical in some cases. Do you have any further info on the third party though, I think I'd buy one.

ok... that leaves me with a red one + evf + a sturdy tripod+ red raid +cheeseplate+ a 300-800m lens + water and food... I had hoped I could spare 5 to 6 battery bricks + the battery plate you mentioned as an extra load !! Thanks anyway, I might consider that option, too.

Youch! A sleep function is my #1 request/need. Just re-re-iterating it with hopes that if enough people chime in it might move up on the priority list (remember how quickly the cold temp issue was solved).

Its a must for wildlife, and a 3rd party hot-swap battery option doesn't adequately address the issue.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, and I did take delivery of my camera - for wildlife work - despite not having a sleep function/quick start up. I believe/hope we'll see a sleep function over time, but if it is important to folks I hope they chime in so that it moves up the priority list.

just wishin...

Have you (or has anyone) attempted to disconnect the evf/lcd or whatever monitoring option used ? Does that save substantial power and allow longer lasting batteries ? Does the evf work instantly when re-connected ? Are the hard disks spinning all time and if so, do they drain much power ? Any idea ? Thanks for a reply

Hi, ever tried to disconnect the evf ? does that help save substantial power, or are the hard disks spinning all time and draining most of the power ? And does the evf work instantly when re-connected ? Tried to post that one on a public thread, may be not the best idea...

Good questions, and I don't know the answers. I haven't powered up my camera yet, I had to send it back for an adjustment real quick when it arrived, its due back tomorrow.

I don't think the 3rd party working on the battery plate has made it public yet - I just asked the owner a few weeks before NAB about a solution and he told me he was working on that. They are one of the better manufacturers of Red accessories, so I'll be snatching it up as soon as it's for sale.

Not sure about the EVF unplugging, but I know the LCD will work if you unplug and replug it back in. I accidentally plug it into the wrong port half the time and once I plug it into the LCD port, it works fine. I assume it would drain the battery a little less, so that's an option to conserve power.

As for the Red drive, I'm pretty sure the disks remain spinning (so they can record without having to ramp up speed), but there's no other activity going on until you hit record or playback. I didn't notice much drain when I was using it this weekend for timelapse. Seemed pretty reasonable. If you're worried about that though when you're waiting awhile, you can always "eject" the Red drive and plug it back in when you're ready to start shooting.

worth trying...

I'd be interested by the answers, being a wildlife cinematographer, too, in case you're willing to try that ! To the happy return of your Red, then ...
