  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Gratical Eye EVF

http://www.zacuto.com/gratical-eye-...ng&utm_medium=eblast&utm_campaign=eye release

looks better than the previous ones, and I'm not totally sold on the red evf yet... thoughts?

I think it's a rather smart redesign. It appears they are using the same OLED and perhaps optics of the previous Gratical. Likely a very useful bit of kit to have if you find yourself using all sorts of cameras. Some of their userbase will be rather frustrated with the lack of HDMI, but honestly SDI is still the better solution on set and people should be rather focused on that. I imagine a HDMI version is on the horizon though. Looks like they upped the build quality, which is nice.

Compared to the DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] OLPF: The newer EVF (1920x1080/30-bit) has a higher resolution and higher bit depth screen compared to the Gratical. It uses less cables or no cables depending on how you rig it. Weight wise, the RED EVF is .8lbs the Gratical Eye is .875 - that's sort of a wash to me. If they do indeed use the same optics as before I do prefer the newer optics found in RED's new EVF. They did a lot right there. Seems like RED's draw less power and there is of course the bonus of actually setting user customize-able keys on the RED EVF. Though the Gratical Eye has a joystick and various features as well.

I love the red evf2, but I would have gotten this one if I was shoot with more then weapon(I'm primarily weapon for the next 18 months). The older zacuto EVF's were way to huge for me, I really like this ones size and that it has sdi with remote power. Price wise you still need to get about $500 of the mounting equipment, so overall is about 1k cheaper then evf2.

I LOVE the new red evf, but, one thing is the Zacuto has way better mounting options for sure

Quick question to the other user of the Gratical EVF.

Do you see a tint shift (from magenta to green) in the glass if you move your head while operating?

i bought but i can use it because of that... i can't wait to try the new RED evf.

Jean-Phillippe, I have a Gratical-X and have not noticed that. is it very obvious or subtle? In regards to this thread I understand this new Zacuto EVF is not a replacement to the Gratical series but in addition to. The new unit only has SDI in, no out, no HDMI and no cross conversion, which is fine if you don't need those capabilities on set.

I've had the best (cheap) EVF on the market for about 6 months, great image quality, light, inexpensive, but it does require some kit assembly. Thankfully, because of some brand bias not everyone has my secret weapon for weapon hahaha!

1080p micro oled
sdi
I think all in it was under $1900
Wooden camera makes the mod kit, haven't looked back.

I have the OG Zacuto EVF and have no idea how to mount it to the Scarlet-W yet. I had used an Edelkron EVF mount for it on my old MX but it wasn't ideal and doesn't work with the new Scarlet without a top plate and I'm not sold on the WC top plate yet.

Any ideas?

720p OLED in this day and time is too far behind in technology. DOA IMO

Seems pretty good for the price. Obviously there are better options out there, but they're all far more expensive.

What is it? Blackmagic?

Matt, does the Blackmagic EVF have a focus peaking function?

i find it impossible to work around it... this is the zacuto reply about that : "...Sorry to hear that you are unhappy with the Gratical X. The slight color shift is a property of Micro OLED. It was the necessary evil in the Micro OLED but we still choose this OLED over the competition’s because hands down everyone says it’s sharper and since the EVF is primarily a focusing device... It is a property of all our Micro OLED displays."

Yes the price is fair for sure. But seeing the "screen door " in your VF gets old quickly. It goes away at 1080 with the decent size image. VF is so important that cutting corners is costly....

HI Brandon- We'd suggest using a piece of z-rail with our recoil handle and axis mini, evf mount. Our axis mini mount gets a lot of great reviews and positive feedback. See picture here- http://store.zacuto.com/cine-evf-recoil/. If you email me at mandy at zacuto.com, I'd be more than happy to help you find a solution that works for you. +
