  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New German Primes: Price below 10.000 per set.

This is crazy...just let us know what's up!?! I thought their would be some footage by now by Laguun. This whole NAB crap is..."Crap". People are waiting for info and Hooo wait for NAB to release info. God forbid you wait for NAB to see and to be heard. If the price or quality isn't up to par...forget about your BiG announcement that you spent tens of thousands of dollars there while you could of spend it here because we are the people will buy and tell you if its good or bad. Lens Crushing...we'll know who's is the best...and worth mentioning!!!

Just give us the news and we'll spread this NEWS around for you for FREE...!

He's explained already that he's under NDA. What part of that is unclear?

well anyone claiming "knowing" so far is wrong.
Several important details are just been decided right now.

As a matter of fact, every involved company is fine-tuning prices, branding etc right now.

What i can now confirm, as all the other testers:

The lenses are optically and mechanically top-end.
Their price is, with below 10.000 per set, simply awesome.

I know for sure that they are discussing focal lenghts etc to be included in the basic set right now, and that this has not been not decided yet.

Furthermore, its not a single manufacturer, but joint forces of several top-end german optical companies.

So anyone claiming to know should be considered with care, as several relevant decision are not locked in yet.

What i can confirm is that there are *several* new prime lens manufacturers surfacing, and that the ones we are testing have been our choice a long time before prices were even the topic, some with a veeery long tradition as the ones i am talking about here, and we are one of the buyers who went for these lenses instead of arri ultraprimes.

Also, i can confirm that the most important factors (prices/composition of the prime set/shipping date per #### order number) will be published before NAB.

We are now using these lenses since february - and they have become our standard workhorses instead of the zeisses. We also suggested to offer a special price for all redusers, but i cant guarantee that this will be offered, as we are, well, not the manufacturers nor the salesforce.

Any footage posted yet from the 'mystery lenses'? Laguun thanks for the posts, but if you aren't in any further position to provide detailed information, you should just zip it and the let the lens manufacturers come forward at the appropriate time. Speculation doesn't provide any benefit to us.

This sounds like the prices are going up. I'd be careful about that given that there is already one set with "killer" marked on it according to Mark from OffHollywood who we also trust. Given that these were offered at $2000 behind the scenes it will be very hard to offer them at a higher price here and not have some disappointed customers. I would hope that "what the market will bear" isn't the main influence in pricing. We need a significantly lower price option to the Red primes not just the same option twice. I think that there are people here like me that appreciate all Red has done for the redvolution and customer care that will support them if it is a close call. Plus it is easier to deal with one company that takes care of you and Jim is likely to be in business longer than anyone else I would bet. Keep the prices down! Sorry to be so direct.

How can the price be going up Phil? Just in the post before yours, he said that the price was still under $10,000 euros. How is that going up? Besides, even if they are more than $2000 euros each, the beta ones were sold for that rate because they were BETA. Wouldn't you want to pay slightly more for the finished product?

Matthew

I am pretty sure the set is 6 lenses as indicated earlier by a few people. I would be pretty dissapointed if that changed to 5.

I do not understand why we still don't have any answers.

The price goes up if the set is five lenses instead of six. Five lenses in the set is $2700 US each instead of $2250 which is still higher than the beta lens set. $10,000 Euros is about $13,500 US.

So? It's $450--practically nothing in the cine world. Considering what beta testers paid for their lenses, I am guessing that it's $2k euro per lens and 5 lenses per set.

What I don't understand is why you think you shouldn't have to pay more than the beta testers. Heck, even RED rewarded the very early adopters with an accessories credit.

What would really help us out here is a picture of one of the lenses and a little more tech info. Of course, Laguun is under and NDA, so unless he can talk the company into letting him give out more info he can't:(

Matthew

Matthew you are right that we shouldn't pay more than the beta testers but I was told it was $2000 US or $1500 Euros for the beta lens set. I agree that if Laguun can't speak for the company then he shouldn't. But he is the one giving us info and saying more info in a couple of days so I assumed he was speaking for the company. I just double checked with my buddy in Germany and he said it was supposed to be a six lens set. He also said they are having trouble with the mechanical design and to expect a delay. I just wish we knew really what was going on directly from the company. That is why it is so nice that Jim is here to answer questions directly. I trust Red for this main reason.

Reread my comment. I implied that the beta testers should get the lenses cheaper than those of us who wouldn't spring for the beta lenses. Unless the beta testers actually got the lenses cheaper than I was told, then a 6 lens set for under $10k euros would be cheaper than what they paid. I too would think that it would be a 6 lens set from the information I have seen, but the info I got would contradict the beta set price, and that seems a little unfair for the beta testers considering f-stop markings and other stuff on the beta lenses.

Matthew

Yea, what's with all the mystery? What are they hiding. Just come out with it already. These are lenses we're talking about here.. not alien moon gold

I have been following this set of lens and it seems to be too good to be true, but I guess you never know. One thing I do know is the way they are releasing this information is terrible.

What everyone here is forgetting about is Service and Support. The one thing that Red has done very well , at least for me, is support my camera. It gives me great confidence that when I add a set of red primes to my outfit, I still will have great one-stop-shop for any problems that may come up and I know RED will take care of me.

I am i the US so i don't need to send my lens over to Germany and if I am over in Europe the Red office in London I hear is just as good.

I just got my camera back with the FREE audio upgrade board that I am pretty sure cost them a boatload of money to give everyone but it bought them my trust.

So even if this set of 6 lenses ends up being 8000 euros I am going to stick with my buddies at Red.

Peter has a great point. If the nature of information trickle in this thread epitomizes the manner in which this lens manufacturer plans on on operating, it puts into question far more than mere specs. Just my opinion.

Nick.

GREAT POST Peter!

Having an investment in a rental house I can tell you the support on current pro lenses leaves something to be desired.

We had a Master Prime go down and it took 4 months to get it fixed and sent back. Cooke was a little better, but still took a month on average, and their God attitude doesn't work in this new enviroment. The bad part for us is that when one lens went down, the entire set was non-rentable. This means for lenses like the Master Primes, it equated to ooodles of lost rental revenue. I do not know what RED or any of these other companies plan on doing for lens support but if it is better than the old guard, Myself as well will be taking a close look at them.

I was very excited and prepared to buy many, many sets of these lenses a week ago. I had some discussion behind the scenes to facilitate a large order and then the communication from their side suddenly stopped, which leaves me with a very bad taste.

My interest is fading by the minute as I now am beginning to feel a bit toyed with.

I cannot see any big name announcing a product like this, it just does not make sense, unless they have completely lost their minds or are acting in desperation.

All the info is from Beta testers, who are under NDA.
I don't really understand everyone's frustration.
Wait for the official announcement, which should come before NAB, and should come directly from the manufacturer.

I look forward to see the lenses and how they will perform. One big concern I have
even if they are great primes is where you can get them repaired, and how long time
it will take to get them repaired.
The support on the camera has been 110%, so a fair question to ask RED Support is how they will give you just as good support here.
The facility in London should in my opinion give you the same service as you could get in USA on all the equipment.
I can´t live with repair times of 3 or 4 month!
You loose too much money on renting gear that can replace it.

Cheers

I am wondering if there is any thought given to the "superset" 10 lens set at at a special price? If these companies are in fact making lenses in 5mm increments then this would be
pretty awesome.

May I recommend arri master primes - min price 12000stg per lens. Solves your issues.
