  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New German Primes: Price below 10.000 per set.

Sanjin,
Nice find!
Note the price of the 2000mm in "cine" mount (BNC or Arri): $4,950... that's $34,325 in today's dollars. Ouch!
The more "normal" focal lengths are in the $275-ish range... or $1,906 in today's dollars.
Of course, when I think of "real" cine lenses of that era, it's Baltars or Cookes. I assume that those would have sold for a bit more.
Interesting times...
Cheers,
Harry

2000mm supposed to be is on that picture above and probably would cost about US $ 35.000 today if somebody could make it ... :cute: .

Sanjin, you are such an internet pirate. I love it.

Curious as to what direction you're going in? Or are you sticking with your badass mo-fo IMS setup?

I talked to my friend in Germany and he did tell me he was offered the new lenses for $2000 USD but could not give me any more details because of NDA. I asked him if was buying the lenses and he said no but wouldn't tell me why. This whole thing is a mystery. Can anyone help add light to the picture?

maybe...

ok- IBE has developed a series of prime lenses. Klaus from IBE is a really good lens ingeneer and has o lot of experience. These lenses he will sell for a price I don´t know - but the mentioned price could be true.

ISCO is developing together with IBE a new series of primes in the upper price class - they will show a set of 3 lenses at NAB - and they want to be ready anytime in summer - no idea about prices and quantity or focal length. But I´ve been told, that they want to be in same quality as Cooke or Zeiss UP / MP´s.

Don´t ask me why this is such a rumour and mystery. Make your own opinion about the way of publishing of these lens news.....

Let's not go blaming anyone for strange rumors and partial information until we all find out exactly what this is about. Perhaps it has nothing to do with some of the companies being called out...

Richard,

IMS rocks.

I'm sure you already saw my latest "hand-held/run&gun" rig development with

Tokina manual 28-300mm-FF35/18-200mm-APS-C sized zoom

that can give you lightweight ENG/DV 10x documentary-reporter sort of zoom range with R1 at 4K/3K/2K.

Let's make a list:

New German PL mount cine lenses>>>

1. IBE

2. ISCO

3. Astro-Berlin

4. ---

5. ---

...

I think it will be:
...,14,15,16,17,18,19,20
25,30,35,40,45,50,55,....

why would you want an end?

cheers,
antoine.

hehe, yea... I want LESS, and I want to pay MORE! xP

ut seriously, doesn't it sound like a bit much? Every 5mm? Also, it doesn't even make much sense for the wide end where it would be something like 8mm 13mm 18mm with huge gaps in between, compared to 135mm 140mm 145mm where one would look practically just like the other...

Just pointing out that the "5mm increments thing" has to be a bit oversimplified due to the NDA. Right?

Unless... unless they payed for the designs for every single lenght and the whole dang machining and assembly lines are 100% automated... and all they have to do is press the right button, then the puff, the lens spits out the other end. In which case I hope they lay down some foam where they get spit out to.

All we know is that 6 prime lenses made in Germany will be available soon for under 10,000 Euros or about $13,500. Which ones will the 6 be? Who is making these lenses?

I do not understand myself why this company is keeping such a big secret about these lenses, they are not a Secret here in Munich.

You have the number of lenses right ( 6 in the set ) but I think Laguun may of heard the pricing wrong, Last I heard it is lower than 10,000 Euros, the real cost of these lenses is very low so they are developing the price depending on market feedback.

Astro - Berlin lens shells are made from a kind of aircraft aluminum and they are pretty lightweight.

I had already in my hands one vintage Astro - Berlin 300mm lens with old Arri bayonet mount

and couldn't believe how it is lightweight lens for 300mm focal length, almost perfect for handheld.

Also optically they are pretty good that makes them an ideal option if somebody want to owe a set

of PL lenses privately and not always to depend on rental.

If they make the price for a set of 5-6 lenses below Euro 10.000 it is going to be a heaven for all those indies,

artists, enthusiasts, experimentalists, small digital cinema boutiques, students, schools, even pro DPs

and many other sorts of RED1 camera owners and users.

Whatever is behind all the lense rumors, it at least provokes RED enough to attend the NAB in a small fashion to showcase their lenses. They seem to be pretty confident to compare them with anyone.

In that circumstance the only right thing I see is that someone who is attending puts one of those new german lenses (if they are at NAB, which seems to be likely to happen) and puts them beside the RED's lenses on that lense projector.

What could be the outcome?

Maybe the new german lenses would be equal in optical quality and cheaper?
That would be a little "desaster" for Jim and his team, and potentially result in a harsh price fight. In the end, good for the users, not so good for RED or any competitor. But hey, if such thing would really happen, its just market rules. Honestly, I do not expect to see THIS happen. Not yet.

Maybe the german lenses are less good than then RED lenses?
Then RED could easily live with a higher price on their lenses, while the german lenses may cover the lower end of the circus. Sounds more likely to me to see this happen. Which lenses would I buy then? Honestly - I have no idea yet. If I know there is something better in a slightly more expensive price range, I will probably take quality over price in my decision. But that is just me. Being German, the german lenses are therefor in NO WAY more attractive to me than any other ones. Quality counts. A good price/quality level makes me a deal in the end.

Cheers,
Axel

PS: Remember, its all vapour ware - we are used to it, aren't we? :)

Show a pic or it never happened. Renderings don't count.

Lens sets that lack of an 18mm or wider can hardly be called a lens set although it's a set of lenses.

Red's "lens set" won't have a wide angle, at least the first batch. And if the upcoming sets from Germany don't have it either it's going to be a big disappointment for many and not the rumors worth.

Sharpness from one corner to the other and a nice bokeh can be accomplished with any better prime for still photography which is around 500 EUR. I don't get excited by pictures that show that. T 2 throughout a whole set including a wide angle, plus high quality mechanics that can be easily serviced is another story. Hard to pull off, especially if we talk about 2k per lens - I'm skeptical, especially if we take the labour costs in account that arise when somthing is manufactured in Germany.

I use primes all day but I would love to see someone to build a fast high quality cine zoom in the realm of an Optimo 15-40 and in the price range of 10k. This is the real challenge.

Otherwise it's great to have competition.

Hans,

once more just to compare:

The best still prime lens set optically and mechanically

(for Leica - M cameras, 15, 18, 21, 24, 28, 35, 40, 50, 75, 90)

costs included 20% taxes about € 37.320,00.

- Zeiss Distagon T* f/2,8/15mm ZM - € 3.690,00

- Zeiss Distagon T* 4,0/18mm ZM - € 1.140,00

- Leica Summilux-M f/1.4/21mm ASPH. - € 4.980,00

- Leica Summilux-M f/1.4/24mm ASPH. - € 4.980,00

- Leica Summicron-M f/2.0/28mm ASPH. 6-Bit - € 3.100,00

- Leica Summilux-M f/1.4/35mm ASPH. 6-Bit - € 3.300,00

- Leica Apo-Summicron-M f/2.0/90mm ASPH 6-Bit - € 2.800,00

With that amount approximately you could buy two

Angenieux Optimo Rouge PL zooms 16 - 42 mm, T2.6 and 30 - 80 mm, T2.6.

Crazy talk...

Crazy talk...

This is crazy...just let us know what's up!?! I thought their would be some footage by now by Laguun. This whole NAB crap is..."Crap". People are waiting for info and Hooo wait for NAB to release info. God forbid you wait for NAB to see and to be heard. If the price or quality isn't up to par...forget about your BiG announcement that you spent tens of thousands of dollars there while you could of spend it here because we are the people will buy and tell you if its good or bad. Lens Crushing...we'll know who's is the best...and worth mentioning!!!

Just give us the news and we'll spread this NEWS around for you for FREE...!

Another set of superspeed primes is looking to be come out soon: Russian Lomos with German glass. Only two years ago, one could buy superspeed Lomos (with questionable mechanical quality though) for few hundred dollars, but now you look down the barrel of $5-6,000 only for starters.

This is another German/Russian alliance, similar to the Hartblei/Zeiss tilt & shift lenses. For this one, they claim a great improvement in quality but at ~ ten fold increase in price. The superrotators were one of the best kept secrets of the Russian glass, but the price/quality ratio is getting higher and higher, not the other way around.
