  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New German Primes: Price below 10.000 per set.

I am not as excited as everyone one else...

It's pretty simple really, it's like hearing about a fantastic car, gets 100 miles per gallon, custom paint job, 0-90 in 2 seconds... Only problem is...

I'VE NEVER SEEN IT!!!!

Currently, such is the case with these lenses. Laguun is doing a GREAT job creating buzz.. But I'm from MO.

I'll get excited when I see the lenses. I'll get more excited when someone HOLDS them and MOVES them.

I think it's great, but.... Show me. :)

Jay

Jay, wait some days - I am on a good way to have some serious information !

No Need to wait, jay you can pm me. Martin you are invited by Jan come to Berlin

I just have a talk on phone with my lens spies in Berlin.

They said everybody there in cafes at Prenslauer Berg, Berlin Mitte, Charlottenburg and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg...

talking today only about history of lens production in Berlin:

"Astro Berlin was a German optical company from 1921 to 1991.
It was located in Berlin, in what became the Eastern part after the war.
It made cine and still camera lenses as well, some with impressive specifications."

Have you been drinking Italian wine again Sanjin or is there anything else to this other than 60 year old photos? :-)

A bootle of red Chianti Villa Antinori 2003 is left for tomorrow.

Now I'm on beer (Heineken) and maybe later would get a glass or two from Islay Malt Whiskey (Laphroaig or Ardberg)...

Stay tuned...I have again one quick and dirty lens test to show tonight...:) .

What will be the focus scale on these lenses, will it be like master primes or like photo lenses

That's funny! Don't you own a "SCAM" camera?

I am not native english speaker, so.... sorry if it seems stupid: But if
the "whole" set (which starts with a very wide 1x angle and proceeds to very long angle in 5mm steps) won't sell for under 9'999 euro.
it will be more expensive.

The first batch of the set that has been promoted till now is 25, 32, 50, 75, 95

cheers,
antoine.

It seems all that is confirmed is this:
A "full set" (5 primes?) for $13,500 or 10k Euros. And you get at least one of those under 19mm.

As far as I understand it, the set could be anywhere from 2 to 12 lenses... : ) That was not confirmed. However, it is very likely 5, otherwise they wouldn't be so happy given Red Pro Primes Announcement of 5 lenses for $20,000. However they are not including their 18mm in that set. That may change now though :D

By not revealing that it is indeed 5, they may be hoping that Red won't try to squeeze a little more price reduction out of theirs in the coming weeks or months.

Finally, as I understand it, it is their full line of primes that will cover the range in increments of 5mm. This full line up is likely well beyond 5 primes and probably somewhere closer to a Zeiss, Cooke, etc full line up...

Here you go:

After longer talks with the manufacturers i can now confirm:
The prime set will be priced below 10.000€.
€.€€€ for the 1.7/1.9 Arri PL prime set.

More news within the next days. We have to respect our NDA, but after a month with these new German prime lenses i can surely say that its worth the wait.

yes, <10.000 for a set.
The "whole" set, which starts with a very wide 1x angle and proceeds to very long angle in 5mm steps however... wont sell for <9.999€

He also said the NDA keeps him from saying exactly how many lenses are included in the 10k Euros set. The $13,500 is the current conversion of 10k Euros to American Dollars.

Ok i will try my best to interpet what is written here.

The "whole" set, which starts with a very wide 1x angle and proceeds to very long angle in 5mm steps however... wont sell for <9.999€

It says that it wont (won´t/will not) sell for the stated price. There is a set of primes that will sell for <9.999€ and in addition there will be a large lineup of primes that goes from 1X in small increasments to the long end.

He is talking about two things... a "prime set" (~5 lenses sold for <10k) and a "whole set" as in 12 focal lenghs that they plan on building but would cost a lot more.

I have heard behind the scenes that these lenses are very good optically but the mechanical design leaves something to be desired.

I remember hearing this before about another lens.

I just received my two Red One's after renting in Germany in January. The word on the street there is that there would be a new set of 6 PL mount lenses using Schott glass and a new lens design for under 10,000 Euros. This must be the set. I have heard behind the scenes that these lenses are very good optically but the mechanical design leaves something to be desired. I hope that is just the prototypes because these sound perfect.

I think you'll find that to be quite accurate. It will be great lenses for a great price, but there's a reason why lenses have cost so much until now.

I don't think these lenses will have bad mechanics , but lenses is a science and COOKE's, UP's and MP's are handmade - there's a reason for them to be so as well.

Now I'm not saying that you can't manufacture lenses under the robot arms but I personally don't think it'll be the same thing and I believe I'm right.

BUT that also calls for outrageous prices and what you will have now is affordable good lenses for the normal guy - now that's GREAT.

I have been told there are 6 lenses in the $10,000 set as well, by numerous sources so I think that is the only other almost-fact we know besides the price.

I am excited about the promise of a good discount for us Red Users as well. Can we assume we will be able to buy each other lens in the set at about $2000US each as they come out?

Even if the mechanical design is just average the price is great $2000 a lens. When will someone post a picture of the set?

Not really, still photo lenses are much cheaper.
