Hi,

For an upcoming documentary I'm looking for a 16-20 Tb raid for my Windows PC.

I am basically looking for a raid device with 600 - 1000 MB/s transfer speeds. And yesterday I came across the new G Speed shuttle, which theoretically meets my needs: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...g_speed_shuttle_thunderbolt_3_4_bay_16tb.html

These G technology shuttles, however, seem designed for MAC systems and I'm uncertain that they will be as fast/reliable on a Windows system.

So my question is:
I have an Asus Rampage V edition 10 motherboard with a i7-6850K cpu running on Windows 10. If I decide to go for the G-SPEED shuttle, could I achieve these transfer speeds with a thunderbolt 3 pcie card like this one: https://www.asus.com/Motherboard-Accessory/ThunderboltEX-3/ ?

Any other suggestions would be very welcome. I've been looking at Areca raids, but I just get lost with so many options, cards... and didn't get any response from their seller here in Spain.

Thanks in advance!

You should be fine, your config. supports no less than 4 x8 PCI lanes, or 3 x16 PCI lanes - so no bottleneck there. The real bottleneck could be the card performance, or the NAS performance, which has to be tested-out on practice.

Similar solution on TB2 from G-Raid speeds only half the speed you want to achieve. http://www.storagereview.com/gtechnology_gspeed_studio_4bay_review

Thank you, Alex.
Now my concern is if the ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 card is compatible with my motherboard, as when I googled this setup I only found a post in a forum where somebody questioned their compatibility.
I contacted G-technology to seek further advise on the matter. We'll see what they respond.

cheers

I see no reason for the card not to be supported by your mobo. Even in the supported list there are plenty of x99 series motherboards. And you have the TB port on your mobo.

Thank you very much, Alex. I am a complete ignorant on these matters (had my system built by a third party) and your feedback is very helpful.

cheers

Damn! Great deal! I just jumped on a 24TB model (4x6TB)! Thanks Gregg! This really couldn't have come at a more opportune moment! I was about to drop this much on a smaller, much less robust/reliable system! Thanks again!

Caught this link in another thread and purchased the 48GB model. Kind of thrilled, because I was just about to drop the same amount on a Pegasus3 R8 with lower storage. Love the features of the Shuttle so much more, mostly in its ruggedness and portability.

I'm still so confused where these secret discounts came from !

Asus TB3 PCIe card is very buggy and hardly anyone (search web) was able to make it work. Mine never worked with the TB2 G-technology raid. I ended up with a Win 10 driven raid 0 (6x4tb) that gives me 1000 mb/sec read speed. I would wait for new TB3 PCIe cards that will be made under free TB technlogy free license from Intel (effective this year) by other mobo manufactures.

Hi George,

Thanks for the heads up. I did the search and you are right, many users seem to be having serious issues making the asus ThunderboltEX 3 work. Damn it!

Mmmm. I already ordered on BH g-speed. I still can cancel, but I was able to benefit from the huge discount ($600), so not sure what to do now. Do you think the new TB3 PCIe cards will be compatible with my ASUS MOBO or just with their own brands?

thanks!

The G-speed you've ordered will work with any functional TB PCIe card. You can try Asus EX3 card with your mobo as long as your mobo has a thunderbolt header. I think the new TB3 cards should not require a TB header, but I have not seen any available for sale yet. Meanwhile if the G-speed you've ordered has a USB 3 port you can use it without any TB card. The connection speed may be lower but it may not saturate the bandwidth with a raid 0 using only 4 drives.

Got it. Thank you, George.

I bought the G-Speed 32TB and formatted in ExFat with the ThunderboltEx 3 card from Asus on an Asus Prime Deluxe x299 motherboard with a 7900x processor and it recognized the unit and it seems to work. Be careful not to remove the cables while in operation. It was difficult also to set up my TB card but make sure to connect the displayport adapter, I didn't think that was necessary but apparently it was for data throughput.

? I have been using Asus TB cards for years and have never had a DP cable attached.
