  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW Firmware scare!!

With Dragon, the current sweet spot to produce it's best image quality, warm up-time and fan speed is around 65.

Is there an official sweet spot for MX?
Thanks
And thanks for the great new firmware.

Targeting adaptive at a lower temperature will lower the core temperature, raise the fan speed and shorten the warm up time. Targeting adaptive at a higher temperature will raise raise the core temperature, lower the fan speed and lengthen the warm up time.

In all cases you will get the best image quality performance if you black shade at the camera's stable temperature.

Not to make this more complicated, or bog things down with false precision, but is there also a best target temperature for Scarlet-X? And Epic-X? I know Dragons like to breath fire but how about the others?

Epic / Scarlet -- It really depends on your environment and what you are comfortable with for warm up time vs fan speed. A comfortable range would be 50 - 65, but as long as you calibrate near your operating point you'll be fine. Dragon has a more advanced thermal system.

Thanks for the quick reply!!

So is it safe to test this beta?

I would like to say that same thing just happened to our Epic. The fan did not do its job whatsoever with this beta. The camera ran extremely hot. (we were inside a cool normal temperature room). Suddenly I realized that the fan did not kick in as supposed to. We shut down the camera (it was super hot!). It did not turn on for on hour...and when it finally came back it wasn't working anymore. Now when it turns on we just get a pink screen...nothing will record and nothing will show. Tried to put back firmware again and that didn't solve it. The camera seems to pretty much be dead. I will be opening a ticket with RED but seriously I would not recommend anyone use the so called adaptive fan in it's beta stage as this is not the first Epic that got bricked because of it! :(

Maz - sorry to hear about your camera. I just want to chime in here and say that we have been exclusively using "adaptive quiet record" since it became available - and have not had any heat or fan issues - multiple cameras, different types of jobs, etc. - and we do have a show that has been shooting for 7 weeks now with three cameras in this mode and we have not had any issues with heat or fans.

To be specific - this is "Adaptive Quiet Record" and not "Adaptive" which we do not use because "Adaptive Quite Record" performed better for us (for ultra quiet record) in initial tests. I should also note that I'm talking about cameras with the new fan upgrade kit.

I think Jay's issue happened with "sleep" mode - we don't use "sleep" mode and have zero need or motivation to use it as we always have to provide more than enough power for the camera and accessories to run all day - so I can't comment on how stable "sleep" mode is or is not - but "Adaptive Quiet Record" has and is - serving us well.

We did not use sleep mode and camera was operating normally with auto...it's not until we switch to normal adaptive that the camera ran really hot and the fans never kicked in (those are version 1 fans) we tested this on our scarlet and it started behaving the same way and we shut it down before it got too hot and damaged....it's hit and miss almost.
