  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Feature Western Shot on 5DMK2 MATTIE

This looks so well done! Really beautiful.

But I can't stand 30 fps. Weird, isn't it?

I don't usually get too wrapped up in the 30p or 24p thing but I have to admit I really think that would have looked better in 24p.

Also, what's with the explosion of religious based indie flicks? Seems like more of those going around these days than anything.

Religious Indie flicks have become their own genre. It's part of marketing directly to a very specific audience. Kurt Cameron has put out several movies this way. They market directly to a huge network of Christians through the internet and databases. They sell half a million units at 20 bucks each.

It's similar to how Gay & Lesbian flicks are being made and sold.

It's all very Rule 34-ish to me. If it exists, there's an indie market for it.

It's inspiring really. Find a starving niche market and make a (well shot) low budget film to appeal to said market. Sell to it independently (Amazon comes to mind) and use profits from it to make your more mainstream flick.

Yeah I too wish you could convert to 24p. Actually you still can, just be prepared to render a lot... I was waiting for Mad Dog McCree to pop out any second! But anyways- that caveat aside good job for creating an actual movie!

looks very nice, but 30p gives it some "home video" or "soap" look at times. I never liked video that was converted to 24p in post either, at least it is distracting for me to see the cadence artifacts.

Yea, some shots are very much "made for tv" looking. I'm not sure if it is just the 30p or whether they used a higher shutter speed. The day time shots have super sharp motion, which makes me think they upped the shutter speed rather than adding an ND to retain a nice cinema look.

When you say that they upped the shutter speed, what range of shutter speed are you talking about?

Awesome video by the way, I really can't wait until they come out with the real thing. Neat story plot as well, it definitely applies to any situation.

Fast shutter speeds probably help the 5D. It doesn't handle motion blur very well, the codec falls apart.

Yea, the shots looked great. But I've seen more "film-like" footage, even at 30p. Most likely the shutter speed.

What do you guys recommend for shutter speed then? I've heard that the closer you are to 1/48, the more of a film look you get.

That's true for 24p. I've found that a shutter speed of 1/80 at 30p creates a similar stuttering motion to 24p at 1/48. 1/60 works well too, since it will give you exactly the 180 degree motion at 30fps. It's the 180 shutter that gives it the "film look", not frame rate. If you use 1/80 at 30p, you can drop frames to get to 24p and it's not too noticeable... although, this method only works with shots where there isn't allot of motion, like dialog scenes. I prefer the 1/80 shutter for everything. It's really does look like 24fps... except it plays in a 30fps timeline.

Looks great, not sure of the blend of ENG/Western camerawork, although why not! Very beautified in the grade but has a nice look to it. Some of the acting seems a bit wooden (not quite getting to Keanu Reeves but close) but got a thumbs up from me nonetheless.

They went out and did it...props to them! Better than sitting there and talking about it!

Indeed very nice, but that video sensibility is unmistakable. Almost looks more like an EX3 than 5D.

But I've seen 30p stuff without this smoother-than-necessary motion cadence.

What's funky there? Perhaps because of software processing to remove CMOS skew?

Because the scenes with most camera movement are the ones that have the most unnatural almost speeded-up cadence.

I loved the grading. Cinematography is quite strong too.
