  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Epic X Price Prediction

Wow, didn't think of it that way...

So much speculation when JJ has already spelled it out. Read the post carefully.

It would be impossible to ship all the Epics by Nov 1st to those who want them...
The only way possible is if you already have one... a Scarlet, upgradeable to EPIC affordably.

Scarlet ends.

They have perfected the manufacture of EPIC's, Scarlet existed because of imperfect manufacturing so why continue?

EPIC owners will be offered very generous upgrade to Dragon.

RED philosophy.

I find it hard to believe they'll ditch the scarlet based on the software piracy theory I've heard for years. I have no way to put truth behind this theory but it makes sense. Companies like adobe generally don't go after pirates because they know the people using the pirated software will learn the software and will one day use the software at a post house or other facility that paid for it which increases the legitimacy of purchasing future versions of the software. This is why companies like black magic are offering a free resolve lite. Learn it now, pay for it and use it professionally later. I believe the scarlet is at the perfect price point for young professionals who are serious enough to invest in professional gear but cannot afford the top of the line. Eventually their knowledge of the camera will translate to upgrades once income rises. Scarlet is in no way a consumer or prosumer camera but is a good stepping stone for young serious professionals and red should continue this line to build lifetime customers.

I’d pitch it at 28% off but no more than…

So for Epic Brian @ $34500 28% off = $24,840

That will sell a lot more cameras and still make a handsome profit I expect, actually they make more money than before from greater volume and efficiency and NRE is paid off etc etc…

I don’t think there will breaks on accessories nor will there be “AMAZING” bundles… won’t happen.

The other thing is that to drop the price down further would be too much of a knee jerk reaction to show that they are AFRAID of SONY… which they are not..

RED has far more self respect than to drop the price ANY further than that I think.

Ta.

As to selfrespext...

The pricethatgives them most headroom forfurther work, is the right one.

If that is selling 5 times the cams and making 2 times the cash + more accessories sale, for half the price of the body, THAT is the right price. Imagewise, they have luttle new to provewiththe MX Epic... It has allready provenitself in any scale of production.

And better profits for RED is eventuallygood forus, as that will keep their R&D in motion, which is essential for our future RedJoy.

Calculus is practical, not emmotional...

Just sayin'

Cheers

I think you have a very good understanding of human nature and in general, how things work.

That's good if the Scarlet was software or furniture.... but eventually it has to be upgraded to something that people pay for. So the question is what's next for the Scarlet... I see two paths EPIC MX or EPIC Dragon. Things are moving exponentially... sooner or later a Scarlet will have to be an EPIC.

I'm going with you on this Andrae, Jim did say he predicted we will all own Epics.

So, you're saying 8pm Mountain Daylight time right? 7pm at Red Studios? Loving the suspense, just wish I had cash to purchase right now.

Well, i think Sony F55 Price announcement will set the range.

http://www.creativeventures.be/sony-pmw-f55-pmwf55.html

18.995 Euros (the price was checked by slashcam and creativeventures claims that prices won´t be higher guaranteed)

+ estimated 10.000 Euros for the raw recorder.

To me the specs of that camera sound like a mix out of Epic+ Meizler, Alexa and added global shutter on top. Tough competition.

Wow. Sony really did bring the goods. Let's go Jannard!

Terry whats up with 24fps and 48fps?, it is still lackning 1-2 frames=)

I have a feeling that the Scarlet is here to stay at a price point of over 5 to 6k ... The Epic X at around 17.5K and the Epic Dragon at around 24k. The existing Scarlet customers will have a good deal to upgrade to either the Epic X or Epic Dragon.

Last night I took those prices with a pinch of salt as you could not order one but yup today you can. Ive just spoken with CVP in the UK and they have no price from Sony yet but are expecting it to be around £40,000.00?
Who knows? I would say though that if the €19K is true I predict Scarlet disappearing and Epic down to $17.5K brain only?

Interesting times!

For all you guys quoting that price...that's for a pre-order "deposit". They don't know what the price will be.

Ok here is my algorithmically derived mathematically and scientifically accurate equation for predicting the price:

Where Y = 3
and
Based on the current price of epic (X) = (Sqrt(((X*Y)/3)^2)+(XY^2/9))/2*.6 = $20,400 after reduction Epic

What I would like to see is $17,500 w/ a $7k upgrade path for Scarlet.

Hope Red is ready to fight, love it or hate it Sony isnt playing around with this release. Red has been put on notice.

$7k upgrade path for Scarlet would mean Scarlet owners pay *beep-boop-beep* $9700+7000 = 16700 (even less if they bought at pre-2012 price), which is $800 cheaper than what a new customer would pay? That doesn't really make sense, especially given that RED would have to QA and refurb the Scarlets and reprice at $7100 max, and they'd be offering the upgrade path as a courtesy (whereas they were kind of forced to do the price drop by the competition)...

I'd imagine, if they are even considering something like the R1-to-Epic stages and Epic did end up being $17500, the exchange price would be $8k bare minimum (which would be 17,700 total, $200 going towards the re-evaluation process), if not $10k because it's a nice round number.

Don't get me wrong, I would love shit for free, but $7k? What makes a current Scarlet owner deserving of such an overall reduced price?

If there was no other way to get to dragon? Also, I believe that if RED were to provide such a path for this price, It would also mean the Scarlet owners would be at the very back of the line to get upgraded.
