I predict:

Scarlets full time for $7500

Algorithm A derives:
Epic X (with side ssd and Ti PL) for $11,111

Algorithm B derives
Epic X (with side ssd and Ti PL) for $17,500

Scarlet X to Epic X board upgrade : $6000

dragon upgrade : $6000 for everyone.

adjusted 10/28/2012

this is all purely speculation based on the new pricing thread.

Ha - wish we are as big time as red.

again, this is not me shooting anything down or pumping anything up.

just mere speculation.

When Jim says "I expect everyone who doesn't own an epic will own one after this..." Paraphrasing here...

this would be my prediction.

If the prices come down this far, the industry will be turned on it's head... as a lot of Rental only companies will just drop the Epic, as it's not worth keeping rental stock at that price - it's too close to consumer/prosumer wallet range.

My thoughts are:

Epic X, side SSD, PL mount - 24K
Scarlet, side SSD, PL mount - 9K

It will be interesting to see what/how the Dragon upgrade applies to the Scarlet.

If Epic goes that low, I'd be really shocked. Anything under $20K is going to be surprising.

I assume that when the Dragon is finally unleashed, it will also sell as a complete camera along side the upgrades. I think you also have to envision what the pricing model is going to be with this configuration in mind.

RED never lowered a camera price... see what happend to RED ONE.

I think people are dreaming...

Pat

Well, I've just seen Jim's post... make me happy to be wrong!

lol Dan 11K for Epic? You are dreaming pal :)
i think you sould be little bit realistic with the prices. And they stated no price reduction on Scarlet.I think 10K is exactly good price for scarlet.

that's going to make it hard to sell my red one mx. I thought obsolescence was obsolete???

They said several times no path to dragon for Red one. That uprgrade path was a full trade in value on an epic.

If it made financial sense, here is how I would price it.

Package includes: Epic-x Brain, Side SSD, Pro I/O, Ti PL, 5" LCD, 256GB SSD Card, SSD reader, battery plate, 1 Red brick, 1 red charger, adapter cable, AC power.
Price: $25,000

Power is the toughest part of the package deal. but the above package gets you shooting minus lens of course. And realistically there's still a lot needed to make it a complete package but this would be very competitive pricing.

We get the answers in like a few days. Perhaps we could wait this one out=)

it ll down only for 5 or 7K$ i think..not like 10-15K :) this is it...

I'm with you but I wonder why Jim sais : "Those of you that paid the initial price hopefully got your money's worth. It was the best price we could offer at the time. You rented your cameras. You used them to generate income by shooting projects"

If the price wouldn't be a big difference (>5000$) there wouldn't be the "hopefully got your money's worht" argument...

Or is it a polite way for RED's leader to calm down the customer that just got into the RED boat ?

Pat

If you paid $38K for an Epic and they're now selling new at $19K, then there may be a storm as that's a 50% reduction.

Probably 30% off the current price is my feeling... maybe 20%.

But, time will tell.

I'd be fairly annoyed if Scarlet can't upgrade to Dragon (or if the price of the upgrade makes it the same cost of an reduced price Epic) or if the price of Epic is reduced by something like %50 (which is essentially Scarlet territory.) I get that price reductions happen to electronics, but it's usually fairly incremental (~10% at a time); if you received your camera two months ago (just past the 30 day limit), it's not unreasonable if someone has yet to pay-off half their camera... That's $10-20k profit above and beyond pay for your time/services (in other words, you'd have to essentially be making $60-120k a year, per camera, on just rental revenue).

Conversely, because they've seemingly waited for the competition to announce a camera that is to be in the $22-25k price range before reducing the DSMC prices, this move appears to be a somewhat less generous offer and more of an necessity to prevent people from switching over. While it *could* just be coincidence, it certainly appears reactionary; if they weren't being forced by another camera, would RED have lowered the price? If Sony releases what is essentially a $22-25k "Alexa" or F65 with 4k+ resolution (the biggest advantage RED has above Arri), where does that leave the Epic? The only move is to reduce the price, otherwise they'll be less competitive... In my opinion it implies that RED's hand is being forced, rather than them dropping prices on a whim.

With all that in mind, I'm expecting the price to be reduced to match whatever Sony's F54k base price is (without any external recorder and whatnot)... potentially be 10% cheaper than that. If the F54k is like $25k camera but then $18k for a 4k recorder, I'd expect the Epic to be $25k and RED to hammer home the "we do 5k internally" mantra.

It's clearly going to be a large drop. 25k for an epic-x brain. I suspect this will also make room for the new line of Epic-D with the dragon sensor which will likely be 30-35k for a brain.

@mike P. One thing is for certain, I'm now expecting a lot more from the Sony camera then I was last week.
