  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Epic-W vs. Alexa Mini test

Maybe you've been reading the FAKE NEWS, but since 2012, with their very first camera they have done dual gain architecture.

The 2.5K, the Pocket, the micro and the UM4.6k UM4.6K Pro all have dual gain sensors.

They've had many issues to be sure, but at least get the information right.

JB

This is glorious.

The big miss in all of this is, that both cameras are not good enough yet. The eye is still able to see the failures of both. Neither camera is sufficient to fool the eye. The arri is the minimum for a digitial camera to trick the eye in dynamic range.... the absolute minimum. The red helium is the minimum to trick the eye in resolution. The minimum. Digital has such a big frontire ahead of it. And that is just in 2d! There is also a whole VR stuff coming. 14stips dynamic range cannot be good enough for a vr world. Doesn’t matter, both cameras are good enough for current day requirements, but niether camera is good enough for the future.

Is it good enought to tell a story?

8K is the minimum ?
You got to be joking. Most people can't even see the difference between 2k and 4k on the big screen.

Oh and by the way, if your eye is tricked by an 8K Helium image, I might want to remind your eye that a face projected 200 times it's size on a flat screen is probably not a real human face.

In the end everything is a question of representation and the complicit agreement of the spectator to participate in the illusion, not resolution.

A grainy black and white train was apparently enough to make people jump up from their seats the first time it pulled up into a cinema.

However, when I start seeing the terrible acne on the face of Lady Gwendolyn these days, I seem to have more and more doubts about whether that is actually King Arthur up there wanting to kiss her before going off to fight in the crusades.

Call us old fashioned romantics, but at this point he may actually be feeling like myself that 8K is clearly a double edged sword.

Twist and make it sound how you want it to sound, but there is still a need and desire for higher resolution video. I am happy and grateful Red is still pushing the boundaries on that front.

Narrative Cinema is a beautiful art form, but it is not the most demanding on cameras, as the medium is most often story driven. So, yeah, shoot those stories in SD or 2K. Doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of story. But i still enjoy higher resolutions. Sadly display tech is not really there yet, but i am enjoying all the latest offeringS, and smaller 4K screens have stunning resolution with near seemless detail at normal viewing distances.but on larger screens, 4K still shows some ugly pixel edges if you get too close.

Cinematic lighting does tend to exagerate depth, and so it is no wonder that skin imperfections can look especially bad in a 2D medium. And if fantasy is the goal, then yes, a high resolution camera can sometimes “show” too much, but that does not mean every camera should be held back so actresses can be objectified. And if you really dislike a person’s skin in 4K, it will probably look bad in 2K too. I do dislike certain industry mandates for content to be 4K or above, as i think the film makers should decide on the resolved detail.

And as the specs go up, the differences between a stop here or a K there become less important. Right now, there is a very big leap between 13stops and 15stop dr. But the difference between 27 and 30 would be less important. After 8K the resolution becomes less of an issue, but more is still exciting, especially for VR experiences and some documentaries.
