  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Dragon....crop factor & windowed sensor?

I don't think the Dragon sensor is close to being Ff35/VistaVision i.e. 36mm x 24mm, that would a huge increase in size over the MX 5K sensor.

Heh. I said "fairly close".

6K Dragon Full diagonal = 34.53mm

If we had a FF35/VistaVision Dragon sensor (1.94:1 aspect ratio) it would yield a 40.50mm diagonal and feature a resolution of 7205x3714 pixels. It would be 5.3mm larger horizontally and 2.76mm larger vertically.

6K with a 1.18 crop factor is fairly close in my mind. Or at least close enough that I'm telling myself it's close enough :)

The Dragon sensor is 6144x3160 and it gives a cropping factor (not the right term but we'll go with it) of 1.2 were MX is 1.3, meaning that al your Full Frame non Cine lenses will have this to be factored in, were a 100mm FF Still lens will give a focal view of a 120mm on Dragon and 130mm on MX.

I just realize that Ketch is the "OFFICIAL" first avatar stating Dragon existence outside RED

"KETCH ROSSi | EPIC-M DRAGON M8"

Here's what I recently explained to an Academy Award Winning DP on how to visualize Dragon as a whole:

- Dragon 6K is "fairly close" to 8-perf VistaVision
- Dragon 5K is "extremely close" to 3-perf S35 Full Ap
- Dragon 4K is "pretty close" to Academy S35
- Dragon 2.5K is "pretty close" to S16

I really like this point Phil. When some people complained that they had no use for 6k and RED should release a 5k Dragon, I was like just pretend it's 5k with a 1k look around! It is indeed many formats in one.

Cheers Justin. That's certainly how I'm viewing it. It's an easy way to visualize things for the "old school" film guys :)

I just hammered out a shot list for a future shoot that I'm holding onto until I get my Dragon. I'm already thinking about where and how to use 6K. Likely for wides, high frequency detail, and exploring the larger format as a medium. Supersampling is going to be fun for textural detail. I'm a stickler for framing/composition and don't crop too much, but you'll have the ability to do that at 6K a whole ton. I can see some neat VFX uses, especially when it comes to keying. 6K stills are going to be great too. Not gonna lie. I'm pretty psyched about this whole Dragon thing.

I fully intend on doing a lot of narrative work and general shooting via Dragon 5K, but I'm going to be exploring 6K a whole ton.
