  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I had an interesting problem with Broadcast4Batteries when I tried them on my new camera yesterday. The camera was NOT happy with them and wouldn't even boot but sure kicked the fans in big time. These are 160WH batteries. I thought I'd read that others had tried these. I might be wrong. I then went to a Dionic 90 with adapter and it was fine. Anyone know if this is an addressable problem?

I got a BAD base plate. After locking the plate I can still rattle it. I heard some had found a temp fix for the looseness. Any ideas? I use a Vinten Vision 100 so I don't think the Arri plates will work.

Joystick knob immediately fell off but that's minor. Does it hold after retightening or are more drastic measures like glue required?

Other than that, I think the thing is radiating caffeine because I keep getting a slight giddy euphoric buzz when I'm in the proximity of the camera. I don't want that one fixed.

Love it :-)

mine came off yesterday too ... however, i wasn't able to find a .9mm to put it back on ... went to local camera rental house and they didn't have any that small ... going out now to try to find it ... perhaps the .9mm should be included with camera bolt set?

The batteries4broadcast bricks don't work for us either. Their dual v mount adapter does work, but no communication (shows up as AC). They have a really bright 35w light that we like. Contemplating keeping their 4 simu charger for RED bricks. Hope they don't blow up. :)

In the U.S. it's much easier to find the .035" Allen key than it is the 0.9mm one..... Which is a Perfect fit.

Every Red owner needs to add one of these keys to there kit.

I've been all over town trying to find either one of those keys. I can't find one. It's starting to be annoying. I have a feeling this little knob is always going to be the first part lost on this camera.

In another thread they talked about the battery stuff.

Apparently, if the camera isn't getting data from the RED bricks it assumes it is AC powered. Then if the voltage isn't just right it shuts the camera down.

We had a problem early on when trying to use an expedition lithium primary battery in an underwater/surf housing - we didn't understand it at the time, but in retrospect this was probably the problem.

Red should really address this, and make it so you can use other power sources.

you can use other power sources... you just dont get the voltage readout on the camera from non-intelligent batteries for now.

With the bricks I was using I was also getting a Body Hot message and it wouldn't fully boot. What does that sound like?

Jarred If the camera won't boot or shuts down because the voltage falls slightly below the AC power level, that is not usable and needs to be fixed!!! It means no other battery can be used. I have stacks of large Lion batts. they are gold plate. The idea that I'd have to buy RED batts in the same size and mount is not so good. Even worse I cannot rent additional batts from a video rental house for exped or other uses requiring more batts. The camera needs to be more compatable with real world uses. These guys are not talking about the low battery level indicator! Hey my batts all have leds for charge remaining anyway.

Yeah, I'm concerned about this issue too. I have a stack of V-mount batteries here that work fine other cameras. They should work with RED too. Perhaps there needs to be a firmware fix to tell the camera a dumb battery is attached.

Or perhaps this is an isolated incident and not an issue with the camera?

EDIT - if the camera is looking for a specific voltage when in A/C mode and shuts down if it doesn't see it then that's something that should be firmware fixable.

The camera will operate if the external voltage is between 17V and 11.5V. So its probably time to investigate your 3rd party battery to understand if it can supply this voltage under load. The RED-ONE draws considerably more current than most other HD camcorders, so it isn't an automatic gimme that other batteries will work. The REDBRICK batteries were carefully designed to work with the camera, that's why we sell them. However, other high capacity batteries such as those available from IDX and AB also are known to work.
