I believe this will use the same panel as the upcoming and similarly affordable Dell 28 incher.

Yep, same panel. Looks like several monitor makers will be bringing this panel to market in the near future. My 30" and 27" Dell, Samsung, Asus, etc.. monitors have been workhorse displays. I'm planning to start replacing some of the older ones with 4K+ screens. I have two old Dell 30-inchers from 2005 that still work, but the screens have yellowed a bit and have visible burn-in now. With ASUS positioning this one at $800 is awesome. Oh, and love the addition of the MHL ability. That means we can use a Roku or Google stick or similar devices and have all our smart TV features.

Looks like 2014 is going to be another expensive year for buying new toys. heh hehe.

Which year is not expensive for toys??

Cool if we can make it a cheap smart TV. Need 4k content though.

A 30hz monitor sold as a "gaming" option? (or is it just an amazingly priced 60hz unit).

Dell says their screen is 8ms GTG where the Asus/Sharp is 12ms GTG... do you think it is really 8ms or a fudge like dell saying it is 10bit (which is just internal)

If we're still talking about the upcoming Dell 28" then it's difficult to say what the actual specs are. Dell is widely known for mis-quoting / mis-representing specs for monitors and other peripherals anyway. No one has released specs on these 28" displays, at least not full specs. Some Dell and Lenovo 28" models have circulated this week for review purposes and initial reports on both don't look good. Reports coming in are talking of crappy TN displays, ghosting, decent black levels but poor highlight detail. The two reports I've seen regarding the Dell mention that it only supports 30Hz, but so say most of the reports for the 32 and 24 inch models -- most people don't understand the whole DisplayPort 1.2 thing and how to activate/ use it. Even these so-called tech-savvy reviewers. I suppose it's possible that these are really incapable of > 30Hz at UHD resolution, but I think that unlikely. If that's the case, then $700 for a 28" UHD display limited to 30Hz with a TN 160° viewing angle screen is a terrible price. We can already get all that in the 39" SEIKI for $450.

Getting 4k/60hz displayport (MST) going with the Titan/Asus 31.5 combo was definitely more complicated than "Plug in the monitor and go" and if you didn't think to check online you may believe you were limited to 30hz (the Asus documentation didn't mention anything, and the 'Displayport STREAM' line in the OSD wasn't particularly informative). I guess I just don't get how they could advertise a 30hz monitor as a gaming unit... other than for casual online games... and gamers will eat them alive online if it's true.

The Dell is on sale now for 699 it states optimum resolution at 3840-2160 at 30Hz. Worth it or not? The Seiki still looks like a better deal eh...

The Seiki's are decent monitors... I've not seen the Dell yet though. I personally would try to avoid a 30hz monitor unless you know you're not going to need to do stuff with it that will drive you crazy - like edit video that's anything other than multiples of 30hz, or use it for anything that will have you noticing the limitation.

The next step up with the Dell monitors is the 24inch at a little over a grand and is 60Hz. That really is a more manageable size for my edit suite. It's definitely a bit more expensive but it is an actual monitor at a somewhat decent price.
