  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Canon Speed Booster

I had tried the metabones speed booster with the Tokina 11-20 cf stills, and sigma 18-35 EF, both can cover closer to FF and was only glass I had, Im still waiting on my DZO Vespid set to arrive.. The all MF lenses with iris are no problem.. With metabone rf speed booster, I could no change IRIS on Red Komodo.. It was all grayed out...

I even updated to latest firmware and did nothing to help.. It just wouldn't work... I read that some FF canon lenses will allow communication but I only had 2x lens to test and neither worked..

I also pre ordered canon speed booster bc my hopes were the communication would be seamless.. But seeing how Komodo is c70 is canons competition I wouldn't put it past them to make it only work exclusively for the C70.. they could easily write code to stop communication with that and Komodo which would then need to be reverse engineered.. If that's the case a lot of speed boosters will be returned.. Unless you use CINE glass w no electronics... then you can use either.

And as for quality every1 thinks canon will be better than metabones but take a look at Canons various ND for RF system.. its blatantly awful ... its really bad tbh... compared to competition..

Hopefully canon speed booster is better and will work, Ive pre ordered so can't wait to get it, but prob will be waiting awhile...

I just hope it communicates flawlessly with Komodo, but seeing how RF glass still is not communicating IDK if it will work or not.. hopefully it will work..

Or even better yet hopefully metabones or Red make their own speed booster with design to lock down so no play... that's the other issue... getting it locked down..

Do you mean variable ND? Variable ND is always worse than anything else that's static. As for the speed booster, it's already tested to be better optically. How it performs with the electronics is unknown, but some say there are more lenses supported that metabones doesn't support.

Vari ND 3rd party and SB

Vari ND 3rd party and SB

There are many other 3rd party vari NDs that are way better than canons vari ND. There is bad cast and basically unusable at higher ranges. For what it costs its overpriced..

As for Speedbooster SB I don't know if its optically better than MB. There really isn't enough info and reviews out there on it. Also metabones Speedbooster could back focus adjust. You can make sigma 18-35mm parfocal im told. But unfortunately the iris will not work w Komodo.

Now my ? Is when Red activated RF glass will that translate to metabones Speedbooster. Idc about AF. Just need iris control.

I pre-ordered canon sb too but who knows if canon will write firmware to try n lock it out from red komodo. They easily could lock it out in firmware.. red would need to reverse engineer it. But it wouldn't communicate. So cine glass would work thats all MF. But we need iris control on metabones. Maybe rf update will unlock it.

That would just be stupid on Canon's part. No one will buy the C70 instead just because it has the Canon speed booster, so for everyone not buying their C70, they will sell the speed booster anyway. There's no reason to lock that to the C70, there's no long term commercial gain to it. The speed booster will outlive their C70 camera.

But I agree Red needs to check it out anyway. They are so quiet at this time on this forum so many don't know what's going on with Komodo. I guess they're working on the next firmware and also trying to get RF working. But they should add the Canon speed booster to their list of "lenses" to start supporting. I just think they have their hands full, especially with the extreme backorder of Komodo.

If nothing else I can't imagine it would be harder to rebuild than a full lens for GDU. They could make a new housing, just use whatever RF->EF method they are already using in other hit adapters (like the revolva) which im pretty sure is just mapping the pins to the right places. Plus if you built it yourself, you decide what language the camera is speaking with that adapter anyway, so they could just use 8 pins and speak EF natively through firmware. Basically the fundamental concept is viable, we just gotta wait for more RF mount things, especially with smaller sensors to show up. I'm guessing the rumored c50 box camera will help with that too since it too will be an S35 RF cam.

Just tested all three Canon EF/RF adapters (Vari-ND, speed booster, vanilla) with the Komodo. They all have some play. Bummer

It seems RED knows that’s a problem, hence the locking RF mount on Raptor. I doubt it will ever be retrofittable to Komodo, but it would be awesome if they could figure out a way.

Until then, kippertie has the chin strap support for the speedbooster, and Vocas? also has a cage solution for support of the RF Komodo mount, but I don’t know if it stops it from twisting.

But the chinstrap doesn't work with the Canon one, am I right? Some cage options for Komodo from Red would be nice. Being able to secure a normal adapter, the Canon Speed Booster and PL ones. It's a nice compromise since we didn't get the Raptor version of the mount.
