  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Canon lenses: EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM/EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM/EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM

Assuming enough light, how would the 24-105 compare to the 'old' 24-70 for sharpness, etc. when used with slow motion control (not stop motion, but slow constant movements)?

Will the IS be important when the camera is slowly moving with motion control - or when it's moving in a normal dolly shot?

NEVER use IS on a dolly or a tripod, period.

Actually maybe three Canon 2.8 Zooms and a set of Zeiss primes....

That is the way I'm intended to go with my kit. The only exception is I haven't decided between Zeiss and Leica R yet.

Trevor - I totally get not using it on a tripod.

My understanding is that IS works from .5Hz to 20Hz.

Is the motion from a dolly shot - or from motor controlled movements - out of that range - or am I missing something something basic to IS?

BTW - this paper from Canon seems to indicate that some lenses like the 24-105 are smart enough to turn off IS when mounted on a tripod - but some are not.

thanks!

more expensive and no IS. wtf?

how does the nikon 24-70 compare?

The 24-70 Nikkor is a stellar performer, it's also now a better bargain. Honestly the addition of the Nano coating to all of the Nikkor pro lenses have vaulted them quite a bit ahead of Canon. The now 4 year old 14-24 was the first example of this, probably the best ultrawide lens ever designed, The latest version of the 70-200mm f2.8 Nikkor (VRII) is the first tele zoom I've used that can really match or exceed the performance of primes not just in sharpmess but in Bokeh and tonal rendering too. I can't wait for the Duclos rehoused version.

The only Canon zooms I really like are the 24-105mm and 70-200mm F4s.Hopefully that will change with this new 24-70 but Canon has to really up thier optics game.

The new Canon 24-70 will make many people's head spin... ;)

It was a very... very long over do upgrade, and it is going to be great!!

Too bad I'm moving off to Medium Format, and LEICA Glass... ;)

Medium format, ey? ;) anything we don't know about yet :D

IS and IZ would have been crucial for me to buy.

I agree on the 14-24. I don't think people are aware of how big a deal the nano coatings and the new aspeherics in that Nikon 14-24 is.

I had been told by others that the 14-24 stood up well against Ultra primes and even Masters but needed to see for myself. We took a Ruby over to one of our local rental houses where the owner is a long time lens tech as well. We projected against his 14mm Ultra and the first thing he said about the ruby was that " it's gorgeous". Consensus amount the three of us viewing was that sharpness was very close but if anything the Ruby had slight edge. Chromatic aberration/purple bring was quite noticeable on the Ultra and virtually nonexistent on the Ruby. We all thought the Ruby had substantially more contrast - presumably due to the nano coating.

I have been using the optitek nikon mount and put my Canon Ti mount on hold, hoping for the $500 Aluminum version to become available to us non-scarlet buyers - assuming that Canon would be the way to go, but I'm starting to question that and hoping we will see a Nikon smart mount soon.

If you don't you will soon in off Patrick... ;)

Just hope to have the new site up and running for it, I'll need some major SERVER space too.

Ketch, for my nosiness / curiosity it's NEVER soon enough ;) excited though to hear it. I wish I could get a glimpse behind the curtain where you work ;)
