Finally!

I was waiting for the new 24-70mm V2 to become an "electronic/autofocus" part of my kit. Now all I need is that rumored 14-24mm f2.8 zoom.

P.S.: This thread should be moved to the lens section of the board, IMO.

The new zoom doesn't have IS though...

From this article:
One noticeable omission is image stabilization — CNET says that it was left out for reasons of "weight, complexity, and expense." The improved optics come at a price, though — the lens is set to launch in April for $2,299, a $1,000 premium over the model it replaces.

More from this article:
uses two Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) and one Super UD lens element to reduce chromatic aberration at wide angles, delivering high-contrast and crisp photos. The Super Spectra coating helps reduce ghosting and spherical aberration. Fluorine coating reduces smears and fingerprints. The lens is well regarded among professional and hobby photographers for its wide angle and large range. Compared with the previous 24-70mm lens, the newest version weighs about 100 grams less at 850 grams and cost about $1,000 more.

I like the seemingly fatter focus ring.

two things that would really have improved this lens for filming: IS and internal zoom, if it had that i would buy it directly, but the only thing better now is de sharpness, that sure could be improved. But with all the people also filming with the lenses, canon made a huge mistake leaving out those 2 features, what would make it a no brainer to buy...

Using my 24-70 with a matte box is just a pain in the ass, and IS would really be nice, i'm really disappointed :(

As long as we are talking about Canon lenses... :-)

I just ordered the 24-105 f/4 instead of the (now "old") 24-70 f/2.8 because I was told by a knowledgeable source that it was sharper. (It also has IS but that was just a bonus.) I expect to receive it today so it's not too late.

Anyone care to comment on this? Agree? disagree? Thanks.

I have the 24-105 f/4. I got it as a kit lens with my 5D and have used it almost exclusively for a couple years shooting mainly landscape. Not a fan of the bokeh for portrait stuff etc. I haven't tried the old 24-70 to compare and haven't tested it out on a RED camera yet as I'm still waiting on EPIC ;)

I've been waiting for the new 24-70 but i'm thinking about maybe keeping my 24-105 and picking up a few more primes instead.
Even though, if canon releases the rumored 14-24 then that with the new 24-70 and a 70-200 all 2.8 could be a sweet lean mean setup!

I just ordered the 24-105 f/4

I've been hearing nothing but great things about this lens. The only thing that stops me is f4, I can live with f2.8 in available light conditions, but f4 is a bit slow. That's not a concern if you'll have lights with you though. I think this lens is a great choice for doco work.

I agree - that was what kept em on the fence for awhile. Finally figured I could squeeze an extra stop out of my Scarlet somewhere. I was convinced by the sharpness argument. We'll see. I am wondering if the new 24-70 f/2.8 has better optics but is is a lot more expensive.

i have both 25-105 and the old 24-70 and for me the 24-70 makes way more pleasing image on the Epic than the 24-105.. not sure about the exact MTF curves so just an overall impression..

Hmmm... good to know... hmmmm. I guess I still have a chance to return it! :-)

Actually what I would love would be a 14-24-f/2.8 then a 24, 35, 50, 85 L set and a 70-200 f/2.8

I am really waiting to see what I think of AF on EPIC before deciding to complete my canon lens set or go to Zeiss...

Actually maybe three Canon 2.8 Zooms and a set of Zeiss primes....

What I want is a fast 18mm. . . something no slower than f2.0, and preferably f1.4.

more expensive and no IS. wtf?

how does the nikon 24-70 compare?

Disappointed by the lack of IS in the 24-70. The cynic in me sees a C version of this with IS appearing somewhere in the future at 4x or 5x the price of this one.

Comparing the 24-105 to the 24-70, I prefer the bokeh and look of the 24-70, but I end up using more the 24-105. Since I own a 24, 50 85 canon L prime lenses, when I use the zoom is for handheld, "I need to get the shot in a very challenging, changing scenario" situations. The IS is absolutely essential for handheld or even shoulder mount shots, specially if you go to full telephoto. If I was to suggest a zoom for video, between these two, the 24-105 is the best choice. Sharpness wise they are very close.

Assuming enough light, how would the 24-105 compare to the 'old' 24-70 for sharpness, etc. when used with slow motion control (not stop motion, but slow constant movements)?

Will the IS be important when the camera is slowly moving with motion control - or when it's moving in a normal dolly shot?
