  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New build up on RED...

Shot with this build [or something similar] all day today.

It was solid for me, but we only shot 3 rolls.

Boot times have definitely improved. I don't have a RED here with me now, but I'll do before/after time tests if somebody doesn't beat me to it.

One cool feature: if you push the button on the LCD, it blows the image up to full screen and kills all the text. It's a nice little "operator's mode" - and it finally uses the whole LCD! That said, switching outputs quickly was nice before...

Glad to see that EVFs and SDI can run simultaneous now, but I still can't wait for the LCD. I'm guessing the scaling for the LCD [1024x600] is what's holding that back?
 
Out of curiousity. What does GPI stand for, is it General Purpose Interface? Does that mean the USB Slave? Does that mean you need an external intervalometer?

Since there is no dedicated GPI socket on the camera, I would assume that the lens / RS232 connector is used. Unfortunately this might cause problems with the Birger lens mount connected to the same port. :wacko:

Hopefully someone from RED or Birger will comment on this issue?

If that is the port in question, it should be very simple to make a splitter cable to provide RS232 signals and GPI trigger separately. Or maybe the Birger mount could have a minijack for GPI built-in.

I hope so. This is encouraging; hopefully it means that we can look forward to more flexibility to maximize quality for each combo of image size, recording medium, and frame rate.

Agreed, the quick toggle between LCD & Preview HDSDI was great, and vital, without dual monitor capabilities.
If you set the PVW HDSDI in SETUP>MONITOR>ACTIVE>HDSDI, then hit the toggle button, it does toggle the image to the LCD, but if you hit the button again, it doesn't send it back out through Preview HDSDI anymore. It just blows the image to fullscreen on the LCD.

It's almost there...

Brook - does that only affect the

mean that you can run the preview HD-SDI WITHOUT the UI stuff on it by pushing that button? Or does the feature you mention ONLY apply to the Red LCD?

If it does work on the preview HD-SDI out, does that strike you as production viable, or not?

Did some timelapse tests at 4k 2:1 and yes it works. You can dial the frame rate down to 1fps if you wish...However the issue remains - the longest the shutter can stay open for is 1/24th of a second, which is probably why it's still classed as "preliminary Timelapse mode"

If you press and hold that key down Brook and it will still push the video signal back to the other connected monitor...

Since there is no dedicated GPI socket on the camera, I would assume that the lens / RS232 connector is used.

There is now.. both of the Aux Power Connectors on the back of the camera have a GPI and a GPO

GPI A is mapped to pin 2 in the upper 4 pin LEMO. Contact closure to Ground (pin 1) will initiate a RECORD start or stop.

GPO A is mapped to pin 3 in the upper 4 pin LEMO. During RECORD its state goes high (+3.3V) i.e it acts as a tally signal.


GPI B is mapped to pin 2 in the lower 4 pin LEMO. Contact closure to Ground (pin 1) will initiate a SINGLE FRAME image capture, followed by a STEP RECORD of between 1 to 10 frames as set in the TIMELAPSE menu.

GPO B is mapped to pin 3 in the lower 4 pin LEMO. It is intended to change its state at the completion of the STEP RECORD operation, but in Build 10 it temporarily works as GPO A does i.e its a second record tally.

Note: To use GPI B put the camera into TIMELAPSE MODE, then each frame is captured as an on-demand single frame recording, but within the context of a single clip. i.e if you make 50 records of 2 frames each, you will create a single clip of 4 seconds 4 frames duration assuming a 24 fps Project Frame Rate.

The Look Around is still on in this mode. I believe the shot name [A001_etc.] is also visible, but I don't remember.

Also remember that the extra stuff [Frame rate, etc.] wasn't really visible on the SDI output as a result of that data sitting outside of the normal 16:9 area.

If by "production viable" you mean good enough for external recording... nope. Not beyond playback. Did I misinterpret?

I hit some bugs today, as expected with a beta build.

Enabling the "operator's mode" will sometimes enable the spot meter.
The camera will randomly switch to 2K mode as it sees fit.
Pressing the LCD power button with the histogram enabled will cut off the right 80% of the histogram on the screen.

Found a few others. I'll post them as I remember them.
