  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just wondering if the new 2TB cf express card is any different than the 660gb?? Same frame rates??? Same compression???
here a the only difference I see but can anyone comment on weather that means I’ll not be able to shoot slow motion at top speeds on my Raptor??

It is my understanding that the 2TB will support all compressions and high speed frame rates. The caveat is that you are able to write far fewer write cycles to the higher capacity cards meaning that they will expire sooner than the lower capacity cards.

I haven’t seen the data on exactly how many wire cycles are expected. I’m very curious about that number.
 
Well I just ordered one 2TB cards but would like to know if it’s say 1000 cycles vs 10,000 cycles or more like not that different really. Also would like to know when you should start to think about changing your cards for new ones..?? Is there a way to know??

Monday I'll have something for you all. Like I said, I've been testing media.

Doesn't really matter how old your cards are id say,,, its more about the number of times they have been formatted or been shot and formatted... There is in the metadata of each card that info about how many times it has been formatted or sort of a milage indicator..

Hey Phil, any update? I know this was something I posted on Jarred's Facebook announcement. Baseline assumption is that media is pretty good nowadays, so hoping for the 2TB card to still have a decent number of writes in comparison to the XT.

Really wish Angelbird put out the write lifetime specs for both cards. In many ways I appreciate them as a manufacturer for holding themselves to a higher standard, so the lack of information is a bit of a bummer.
 
Until Phil is ready to report back - Today on the live stream Red mentioned that the 2TB cards are meant to be used as basic media, and compared them to Redmags. They then described the 660’s as more specialty cards designed to keep cranking in high temperature environments and other difficult shooting conditions. I took this to mean for general shooting we won’t be disappointed by the 2TB’s. Of course I’m paraphrasing here so please correct me if I’ve misspoken.
 
Kick in the teeth for those of us that bought a few 660GB. Oh well.

The way I see it - I’m going to want those 660’s in the arsenal. I’ve got some 2TB’s on the way, but these 660’s will be great to have in the Texas summer heat - and when I need them I’ll have them. Until then they will still cycle through and keep my DIT’s a little less bored.

I’ve always preferred smaller cards though to be honest. Smaller cards mean smaller problems if we are facing corruptions or - god forbid - a card is lost.
 
Regarding corruptions... just got a "Record error: Media write speed error. Please save files and secure format media." with the 2 TB Angelbird after <2 minutes recording a flat scene without much detail or movement.
Firmware 1.2.6 and recording at 8k 17:9 HQ. The card was almost empty, only five clips with ~5 minutes in total on it. Obviously, the card is still relatively new and hasn't had so many write cycles :)

Is this the RED Angelbird card or a MK 2 Angelbird card?
 
It's the MK2. I repeated the same slow pan three times after that error and without formatting the card (ejected and re-inserted) but it didn't happen again.

Submit a log to RED if the error occurs again. I have yet to experience this at max data rates.
 
Yes, grabbed the log already but wanted to see if it reproduces, also with a another card.
 
I bought one the second it was approved... sad to hear about the error! Please post if you have any more issues?

Thank you for the work you put into this. I had initially picked up a couple of 660's but went ahead and ordered a couple of RED 2TB as well. I can sleep soundly knowing it'll potentially take me 15 years to get an error message haha. I tested them out over the weekend and they all work flawlessly. Your work is appreciated
