  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Most likely due to support issues.

It's the same reason Apple doesn't sell their OS for PC's. Imagine the number of people calling Apple saying that Mac OS is having issues on a ghetto swap meet PC the guy bought. Also why Apple only has 1-3 desktops. Easy to narrow down the trouble when the hardware is all equal throughout.

Just my guess.
 
Locking out commodity media in favor of branded media is the kind of move that Panasonic did with the HVX. It sucked. I hope that if a card like the transcend is fast enough that they will let us use it.

Just ordered 2 cards and will get them tomorrow. Will report back as soon as possible.
It´s half the price of the RED 16GB card an no shippingcost/custom. Would have loved to by from red but cant afford them right now.

If you can also make sure to test and see if they work when in 4k 16:9 Redcode 36 while recording audio. That is where people seem to be having issues at the moment. Record for 4 - 5 minutes continuously and see if you get any dropped frames if you do not mind.

Yeah, I´ll try that. I will try to fill the card and see how it works in 4k 16:9 with 4 channels of audio. Different scenarios, short takes and long takes with audio and without.
Probably won´t report back until Thursday, busy tomorrow.

How is Christian going to test this if Red doesn't unlock the card reject code?

Unfortunately I have yet to see an official word from Red on this. It hasn't been publicly said that they are doing this - that I know of anyway. There seem to be hints of that. And then there are reports like this:

So it all leaves a lot of questions- will the card work? can you record audio at the same time with out issue? does Recode 36 work? are there dropped frames? Is Red locking out any card that they do not have on the approved list, or does the camera rate the card, and then lock it out based on what it sees the speed of the card being?

At the very least, Christian will be able to test the card and see if it works. If it does, and he can record media to it- then he can test it further and post back the results.

My first try went like this: The camera say the card has not been speed verified and it only allows me to record 2k at redcode 28. So I guess Red is putting a block on cards that they haven´t tested yet. Is the Lexar 16GB able to record 4k? I hope Red will test this and let us use these cards since their speed seem to be ok. Don´t know about the rest.
I will try some other stuff and see how it goes.

I did test the 16GB 300x Lexar Cards, I was able to record. It wasn't my Camera and it was a Prep / tutor session. This Owner had bought some of them and they seemed to work, just as I said they work as the 8GB cards do. I'm pretty sure this was Build 17 341, this might change with future builds.

I'm not really interested unless they record 16:9 RC36 though. And even then I couldn't afford to lose footage on someone else's shoot. But for personal use they might come in handy, so I'd like to know if some of the faster cards work.

So NO 4k at all? Even at Redcode 28 at 2:1? Grrr! Well that seems to confirm that Red is blocking out cards via firmware!

Hopefully they will test these cards and allow them ...
 
Hi again!

Did some more tests and NO, nothing but 2k 2:1 redcode 28 up to four channels of audio.

Everyting else is "not valid". Like i wrote last time, the camera warns me that this card hasn´t been speed tested and is not compatible. It also informs me that 2k is the limit and that there is a big risk of drop frame.

So I guess Red is blocking the cards, other than those that are qualified.

I hope they add a menu for turning the warning off. So we can try at our own risk, it could come with a big warning (no problem for me).

Please Red, try these cards!!! Or solve it in menu...

Run a test on a Red flash card or even an 8GB Lexar. Look at the graph you get on the application. Then run the test on this CF card and compare. What you should see with the Red and Lexar cards is a graph that runs straight and at a fairly constant write speed (Something in the 30+MBps if memory serves, it's been a while since we tested any). We did some tests with faster CF cards and this bit of software shows that they weren't suitable because they had dips every so often where the write rate dropped significantly. Obviously these would be useless if you are needing to write at a minimum constant rate as we all do with our Red cameras when recording.

Anyway, take a pic of the write rate of both sets of compact flash cards and post the results on here. If the graph for this CF card is constant AND faster then therre is little reason it wouldn't work on the camera.

EDIT: Not sure if you need to purchase the software to be able to use the benchmark tests part of the software. We bought a copy ages and ages ago... can't even find the app let alone the serial. That said it seemed to give pretty good results that mirrored what Red had said about the cards we tested.
