  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New 16 GB CF card with SSD inside

So is that a yes on the Lexar 300x 16GB?? working at 4k?

They don't work here.

I've only found one Lexar 300X 16GB card that will allow me to set the camera to record 4K and it has issues every now and then in simple tests. No way would I use it on a real project of any sort.

It seems there are a couple versions of the Lexar 16GB cards and some appear to the camera as "OK" and others get locked to 2K.

I've tried 4 of these cards in all, only one works and even then, it's about 90% and not quite as fast or capable as the 8GB RED or Lexar cards. It will give me 4K 16:9 RC28 consistently with no audio. But that's it's limit before it craps out. And even then I've had a glitch or two.

THanks Jeff, what I wanted to hear. Been looking around, Red DRives are all fine but I want some light weight setups sometimes and 8gig is ...small....

Another Thanks

Another Thanks

Another thanks from me Jeff.

I was thinking about trying one of these as an "emergency standby" and use it for my dslr if it didn't work out. A momentary laps of reason, and you saved me some time, money, and trouble.

That said, there is a lot of whining here about the cost of Red media, and frankly I don't really understand it. Perhaps buying a 32GB SxS card less than a year ago for $1500 set the pain threshold high enough that I'm inured. (and yes Sony has since lowered the price considerably)

I'm confident that as flash memory and SSD prices drop like a rock, Red will adjust accordingly modulo the performance issue.

We're just not really there yet on Compact Flash. (Folks seem to forget that consumer grade for dslr isn't the same things a continuous throughput)

Frankly what I'd really like to see is some guidance from Red on form factor and frame rate support for version next when new or updated storage ships.

The bleeding edge is named that for a reason, you don't know what you don't know. But Red is likely far enough along in design and perhaps in the compression algorithm to be able to provide some guidance without giving away any proprietary information.

Do I buy 32GB cards when they ship? It really depends on if they'll support at least 30fps to 60fps at the new sensor data rates.

Do I continue to invest in ET gear for Drive mounts because the SSD drives will be the same form factor as the current incarnation, or will the fastest frame rates be available in another form factor? (no info on new form factor needed here)

I completely get that we've been informed that our old stuff will work. But that could very well mean "4k at Redcode 36", which is totally understandable, but it limits some of the capabilities that Epic will provide, so I don't want to be making major investments if the same limitations apply.

The form factor question should be answerable now or pretty soon.

Performance tuning generally comes late in the software development process, so Red may not know when the 32GB cards ship what frame rates will be supported with the new Redcode. But the I/O numbers of the new card should be able to provide some level of guidance.

That would be super helpful.

Make sense?

Steve

I have not tried the hoodman cards, but when I was at NAB I stopped by their booth to ask them if they worked, and they said that they did not work at the full 4k. 2k worked- but not 4k ...
