  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New 16 GB CF card with SSD inside

I would really like to know this too. Seems like if Lexar 300x from 3 years ago worked, somebody has to have achieved sufficient speed (particularly via this internal raid idea) to work in our REDONEs.

Ooh- this looks interesting- 600x speeds- hopefully this will work with the Red, and be more affordable then the current 16GB cards. :)

According to the article you linked to they are not out yet, and a price has not been announced.

Brilliant!

Brilliant!

That is great! Has anyone placed an order?

Hopefully with an advertised write speed of 87MB/s the average speed will fall above 40MB/s so that they will work with the Red!

Oh, and it also looks like they can be used in temps up to 85 C / 185 F - now I can film inside of an oven!

Note that these Transcend 16 gig cards might be fast enough spec-wise to work with Red -- but I believe Red will have to "approve" and allow their use (ie, test and if it passes muster, make a decision and a firmware key to allow) before they will work beyond 2K.

Please correct me, but I believe as of now, only Red approved 16 gig cards will be recognized for above 2K recording. My understanding is that any 8 gig card that will give sufficient throughput is allowed to work, and maybe 16 gig cards that are not Red are allowed for 2K -- although 8 gig cards that have the speed are. Lexar 300x 8 gigs for sure.

Perhaps others can confirm or elucidate -- or correct.

That's a good point. I never was able to get a straight answer as to if Red is blocking out other CF cards via firmware. But if they are, then any other card would not work ...

It would be great if there was a list of approved cards listed in the manual, or at least as a sticky on the forums. It's kind of frustrating that you have to wade through tons of posts to figure it all out ...

It seems like it is about time that we could expect some clarification on this point.

The Lexar 300x UDMA cards do work as I purchased some of Soderberg's original 200 that he used for CHE and I think the RED cards may have been rebranded (selected?) Lexars. But we were also told that the 300x UDMA 16s weren't fast enough, and I believe it was stated at that time that firmware would only allow jtested/approved cards, and that they had tested many cards and none were fast enough. But one would have to think that more than 2 years later SOME form of straight card or RAIDed cards would work. The SDHC guys are coming out with level 10 cards (level 6 were required to do full 1920/1080P video).

Alot of 16GB cards work, but are you are unable to record 4k 16:9 in RC 36, 300x 16GB cards work fine. Just only limited to the same speeds as the Red 8GB card. Like RC36 in 4k 2:1. Thats the best you get. or 16:9 RC 28.

I didn´t know that...

I have 2 RED 16Gb cards, I can live with the original 8Gb cards specs, despie their insufficiencies, but I would love to know what 16Gb brand cards that will deliver at the same rate as the original REDs 8 Gb cards.

The Lexar 300x 16GB are nearly identical to 8Gb Red ones, other than the size of course.

Alex are you saying that The 16GB LExar 300x cards work the same as the LExar 8GB? have you seen this and tested?

I have three lexar 16 gig UDMA cards and they all work at Redcode 36 at 4K but only in 2:1. They can drop frames when running audio to camera.
Something to bear in mind that I only just found out, if you use CF cards that aren't certified red ones your camera goes out to rent and the production has problems with the cards there insurance will blame you and you could be liable to restage the shoot (I've heard this has happened to someone at a cost of half a mill).

I'm not renting much at all. good note though.

So what your saying is that the cards give you the same recording settings and bitrates as the 8gig cards?

I believe Red said they are programmtically detecting if a "non-Red" CF is used and limiting recording modes based on that. We'd need them to remove these restrictions before we could do testing. They said they were doing these tests for us, but we haven't gotten an update in months. It would be very helpful if Red would keep a sticky thread of all the CF cards they are testing, then we could point out to them the cards they missed. We are LONG due for an affordable 16gb CF.

Is that policy designed to limit the number of support calls or is it a profit motive? Does anyone know if RED will open access to non branded media?

thanks
