  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW 1024x768 HD Monitor

Tested with the RED

wow, I thought I posted this already, but for some reason its not there.

So I wanted to thank Manny for taking the time to test my monitor with his RED One.

We tested from the HD-SDI and also from the HDMI.

The HD-SDI did not show the menu items below the image. (and we didn't get a chance to test the HD-SDI out port)

The HDMI went into the monitor as DVI by way of a HDMI to DVI cable. And it did show the menus and items. (it was missing some things but showed almost everything.)

I have to say I'm very happy with it. Manny, your thoughts on it would be welcomed as well.

Thank you,

Luis

Hey Luis!

Sorry it took me so long to post!!!

Luis' monitor looked sweet - the biggest selling point for me was the angle of view! You could look at this thing from WAY off axis and it's still viewable. The build is robust and looks somewhat like a Marshall. I wouldn't freak out if I dropped it.

Hey Luis did you incorporate the masking idea you were telling me about?

hey Joelnet,

The difference between the 3 models are this.
1st model has no HD-SDI
2nd model has 1 HD-SDI in and 1 HD-SDI out
3rd model has 2 HD-SDI in and 2 HD-SDI out
all the other inputs are still available in all 3 models. Some monitors you have to choose either HD-SDI or Component RGB or DVI (which works with HDMI also) but with this one, you always get all the inputs.

Mark,

I did incorporate the idea about the marking. I still didn't make the notches to hold the rubber bands, but I'm still contemplating that. What I did do is have the marks Silk Screened on the front so you can put some tape.
I'll post pictures tomorrow. if you think the rubber band idea will really catch, I can still implement it.

Thanks for your support.

Anyone else in LA with a RED, and maybe even a Marshall, I'd be happy to bring my monitor and let you guys compare them both.

Manny, can you tell us in more practical terms how monitor behaves with red? i.e. resolution, color reproduction, ease of focusing when lloking at etc.

i am seriously thinking of buying this monitor btw.

thank you,

filip

That looks very good. Is there a reason you didn't make it widescreen?

Hi Nils,
Yes, the reason is because the LCD manufacturer did not make a 1024 pixel wide screen under 10" that was wide screen. basically its the only one that I'm aware of. So my guess, its the same screen as the Panasonic $4890. monitor. But you get it for much less. (of course it doesn't have the red focus assist, or the waveform monitor.)

Didn't have alot of time to really check res, color, etc... The monitor looked very similar to the red lcd in those terms... but larger, better off axis viewing, and a ton of inputs. Focusing is easier because of the size and off axis viewing - but it is larger and heavier in terms of toting around. I am used to carrying heavy field crt's around, though. This is a good balance between the smaller red lcd and something like the panny 1700. We were able to mount on the red arm - but it may be a little heavy for that . It would be cool for me as I also have the HVX.

Manny,

thank you for info! it looks that this monitor will be real hit soon. did you have time to check how monitor works in bright lights or outside in the sunlight?

thank you,

filip

Hey Guys,
Thank you for your support. And Thank you Manny for the time you took to check out the monitor that day. If anyone else in the LA area with a red wants to check out my monitor, please send me a PM and we'll arrange a meeting.
Also for those who didn't see the pictures in my site here they are. Again, the buttons will be different. (better) but the rest should be pretty about the same.

By the way ..Your monitor looks great.... any plans for it to be day bright? easy to see in direct sun??? I rent small ( 7 to 8 inch) monitors all the time. Looking for a great one for Steadicam.

well, you can ask Manny, we tested it under direct sunlight and its readable just fine. we placed the monitor perpendicular to the ground, the sun hit the screen directly and we could see it just fine. if you tilt the monitor down, so that the sun light gets reflected directly to your eyes, then you can't see it. But who in their right mind would do that, I don't know.

Its kind of weird, I can talk til I'm blue in the face about how good this monitor is, but it won't make a difference unless you see it, or someone who you trust sees it. If you are in LA, I'd be happy to show it to you.

I will also have a hood option in the near future.

And if you have read the threads, the monitor has an anti-glare filter, and the the inverter that drives the LCD bulbs, can actually over power them to make it brighter when needed. (most of the time you will not need it. though)

Siniarch, excuse me for asking, but why the name "carrion"? Doesn't that evoke something unpleasant?

Siniarch, excuse me for asking, but why the name "carrion"? Doesn't that evoke something unpleasant?

Carrion refers to the carcass of a dead animal.

"Carrion is an important food source for:

large carnivores and omnivores in most ecosystems. Examples of carrion eaters, or scavengers, include hyenas, vultures, Tasmanian Devils, Bald Eagles, and Blue-tongued lizards and movie producers.

It's nice to know there's a place in the ecosystem for movie producers right next to the blue-tongued lizards.

No problem - the monitor was very good in sunlight! Sorry forgot to mention that...
