“THE STATION MASTER” short film

"..We shot the short film on the Arri Alexa with an uncompleted set of Super Baltar lenses and some Kowa lenses to complete the set at the wide end. The Super Baltar lenses are famously used on “The Godfather” and “Birth”. The Kowa lenses are the Japanese copy of the Super Baltar. I’m sure my Director of Photography Stephen Murphy would gladly answer any more questions about the equipment we used. We talked quite a lot about shooting on 16MM film, but close to the end of pre-production we went for the Arri Alexa, which I have no regrets on doing, it’s an amazing camera..."

A lonely Station Master at a remote, rural outpost encounters a woman stranded overnight at his station, and after some hesitation, invites her to spend the night in the warmth of his humble home. This unexpected encounter reawakens the Station Master's enthusiasm for life as the two talk long into the night, but in the morning, when her train arrives, will she leave along with his heart?

I've heard that about the Kowas, but so far haven't found any official documentation. AFAIK, the Kowas use a more golden-colored AR coating that gives a colder image but warmer flares. This is done by making the single layer coating a little thinner than normal, so that it is tuned more to blue light. By contrast, the Baltars and Super Baltars used a more "normal" single layer coating that is tuned to give a warmer image but colder (bluer) flares. The B&L documents quaintly specify their coatings as "All coatings shall be middle purple. 500 - 600 mu". I took that to mean that the the coatings should be tuned for green light at ~550nm and accordingly had the first production batch of lenses prepared with 1/4-wave MgF2 coatings at 550nm (e.g., 138nm coating layer thickness).

I'm curious if anybody finds the Kowa coatings (cold image, warm flares) more desirable than the Baltar coatings (warm image, cold flares). I can provide both as options.

Brian,

I was wondering about that "..The Kowa lenses are the Japanese copy of the Super Baltar…" statement as well. But I kinda Always see Super Baltars paired with Kowa Prominars for some reason for projects.

That would be great to provide the two coatings as an option.

I'll post some Kowa Prominar lens examples for the next few post to give some visual examples of what I think you are referring to.

to be honest, i do use the kowas more because of the love of warm flares!

"Before Mars" complements the highly anticipated National Geographic global event series "Mars" premiering on Monday, November 14th at 9/8c from Academy Award and Emmy winning producers Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Michael Rosenberg.

channel.nationalgeographic.com/mars

It is human nature to thrive on connection. We are on a constant search to feel linked to the world around us, to find a place where we belong and take refuge there. So what happens when we feel like an outsider? What happens when the lines of “home” are blurred and you aren’t sure where you fit in this world?

“Before Mars” is a heartwarming narrative that explores the themes of self discovery, belonging and family. For those of us who have a wanderer’s soul, our idea of “home” is one that can constantly change. But there is one thing that remains the same, at the end of the day, no matter where our adventures lead us, we can always find our home with the ones we love.

RED Epic-W Helium 8K Test

The Super Baltar part of the Test starts at about the 2:24 mark till the end

By Jason Han

https://vimeo.com/188865905

All shot at 8K FF - 23.976p - 8:1 compression
An extensive test of the RED Epic-W Helium. Tested with Cooke Anamorphics, Leica Summilux, and Super Baltar. This was an unplanned test, literally rushed out and called a few friends the day I received my camera, hopefully it's helpful. We also did side by side comparisons with RED Epic Dragon and Arri Alexa mini, but I don't currently have time to work on those comparisons. So far I think the Epic-W is outstanding... unrivaled low light capabilities with any cinema camera I've ever used. Detail from downscaled 8K is incredible
