If you've ever wanted to get that classic film look, there's no better way than to use vintage lenses. In this fascinating video, DP Jody Eldred visits fellow film-maker Todd Fisher to test out some of cinema's most classic lenses, used on films such as The Shining and Casablanca, on his Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4.6K.

Thanks to Blackmagic for giving us access to this film

And thank you for posting all this stuff. So much information to digest! :-)

This goes in circles. Just because you like old Porsches does not mean you can take a blueprint and start to make Carrera 944´s, call them NEO Carrera 944 and take them to market just because Porsche is not making them any longer. It does not work like that.

Or am I missing something? Does Cadwell have a contract stating that he can use the Super Baltar name? If he have an agreement with B&L, then, all great. If not, then its not all great. See the difference?

There is a cyclic thing going on here! The only thing I think you’re missing with the analogies is that the Baltar trademark was left to expire nearly 30 years ago if you look it up, last time they renewed it was 69. B&L clearly have no interest, hence throwing it all away. Porsche on the other hand is a current brand who rightly would jump all over you if you did that. B&L don’t make them, no interest otherwise they’d have kept up with all their trademarks..

I do understand where you’re coming from but I think Caldwell is doing the right thing in this case..

Cheers
Paul

I try to be vegan as I dont like what we do to animals, but sometimes I eat a burger or meat as it taste really good. Still, I see some moral issues.

I used to have a Super Baltar set about 10 years back dont have any now.

Now I only got my Cinemascope Baltars. But I never rented them out or really used them for anything and they are way different from these NEO lenses or normal Baltars so dont think this will really have any affect on me. But sure, they partly share the name and yes possibly thats why I care, problem with that? Or I need to be a saint myself to point this out?

It's hypocritical behaviour by definition.

I know Nick (the gentleman presenting on the NAB videos). They're doing a cool thing here.

At the end of the day just because some guy rants on Reduser, it's not going to change anything. They're keeping the name & I'm sure they'll be a successful product..

Spherical Lenses Comparison - ACS Victoria

By ACS Victoria

Here are some tests ACS Vic shot to compare the traits of some Spherical lenses used commonly in professional cinematography. We chose some very modern options and some vintage lenses.
The images were shot on Arri Alexa Plus 4:3 in 16:9 with at 2.40:1 aspect ratio at 25p in 1920x1080 to ProRes 422HQ. In this Vimeo example, the video has been converted to 1920x1080, h264 at 8000kbps so the quality has been reduced to allow streaming, but fair comparison can still be made.
Lenses include Cooke 5i, Cooke S4i, Zeiss UltraPrimes, Zeiss Super Speeds MkIII, Schneider, Cooke Speed Panchro, Super Baltar and Zeiss Standard Speeds. We shot at T4 and no correction has been made in the grade other than to make extremely minor density changes in the mids to balance any discrepancy between the lens iris marking that would distract from comparing the lenses on an apple to apples basis. The lenses were all 50mm.

Film Noir “THE KILLERS” clip

By Jeff Barklage

This is a 1 minute clip of the short film THE KILLERS, shot on a 60 year old Mitchell BNCR camera with vintage Super Baltar lenses! Shot on Kodak 35mm neg to give that film noir look. Alex Chikov directed.
When Alex contacted me to shoot his short, he insisted on using my Mitchell BNC camera and glass...and I was more than happy to oblige!
I insisted we go total old school and use ALL tungsten fresnel lights, no Kinos, LEDs or HMI....we wanted that look and feel of that era.
We shot in an abandoned 40's diner, the art department restored it to its original glory and gaffer Russ Faust and his clan brought it to life.
Alex and I viewed many film noir pictures to recreate the lighting and shadow style of the era..the fedora hats always create a challenge to light the face, but we nailed it! This was an actual location with practical walls, so moving that gigantic camera and working hot lights inside a metal building created quite a greenhouse effect, which the actors in wearing wool long coats, suits and ties had to endure.
Of course, the compression needed to stream on Vimeo has all but removed the beautiful subtle film grain :-(

Nick I believe it was the Super Baltars.

20190413-163224.jpg

I know, but this is where knowing the history of cinema helps.

Read this article:
https://ascmag.com/blog/the-film-book/gordon-willis-tribute-the-godfather

It clearly says Gordon Willis shot on a 40mm and 75mm Baltar a lot.

There is no 40mm Super Baltar.

There's only a 40mm in the regular Baltar series.

So...he probably shot on regular Baltars. But people aren't often aware there is another set before the SUPER's, so they just assume it was the Supers.

But if Gordy shot most of the film on the 40mm (which I believe was his favored prime), then that's clearly not possible.

That's why I'm 90% positive he shot on regular Baltars, and why you can't always trust the internet.

Nick,

Yeah, I see what you mean about the references to a 40mm. I wonder why then do so many reference the Super Baltars as being used on " The Godfather", maybe they also read it on "shotonwhat" as well. It would be great if this was finally cleared up.
