About a month ago I bought a 4.7 monitor from the Red Store in New York. It was paid for by the company I was working for at the time. I received a call from the Red Store saying that they forgot to charge me sales tax and now they want to collect it. ($120+) I no longer work for that company that bought it and they have 0 interest in paying. I guess my option are to ignore the situation and leave it as their fault. Return the monitor at a huge restocking fee. Pay the sales tax. Your thoughts?

Send me the monitor, I'll pay the $120:biggrin:

Sounds like you got a pretty sweet deal, NO?

I would tell the RED store your story, and that you no longer have access to those funds. Therefore you can't be responsible for a mistake they made over a month ago. Their accounting will have to swallow it. Or if you don't need the monitor, tell them you are willing to give it back to them at the price you paid.

Finding a mistake a month later and asking for money to customer is not proper accounting. My 2 cents...

Agreed. This is on the RED store. Too much time has passed for them to try to collect this, as it places an undue burden on you in that you can't now ask the client to pay for it as you would have when purchased. Tell them that they'll need to figure out their mistake.

Thank you. I was thinking the same thing, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't out of line.

Who has the monitor? You or your old company. If it is the old company, then they would be on the hook for the sales tax. If you have it, you may want to pay it. If you plan to be a Red customer in the future, they will collect it one way or another.

Like someone else said, explain your situation to them. It is possible it took so long was because accounting may check this once a month, which it was caught about a month later. They money goes to your state, its not like they are going to pocket all of it.

There is a other option.

If you produce anything for film or broadcast, you can get a tax exemption in NY. Just file for it and resolve the issue. You can file the form up to three moths after you made a purchase.
