There's a reason for it that these are locked. Please contact RED support. They will help you out.

What's the reason? He paid for the camera, he should have access to the software without paying $500. I really don't get the transfer of ownership fee. Not one other company does this.

I remember a time not so long ago where Beta's and sometimes RC where openly downloadable in Recon so I totally agree. If stolen units were marked as stolen and bricked inside firmware, it would be easier.
Not being able to upgrade when you bought your unit used -and legally- is a pain.
Not being able to upgrade rental units is a pain too. I know some who are still on the 4.X.X

The transfer of ownership and the 3 months of warranty is not appealing enough, despite the awesome red customer services.

I have to ask the former owner of my personal scarlet every time, even though I own an Epic Dragon with my company.
So by the way, I +1 this thread :) if someone has the Scarlet MX lastest firmware , RC and Beta, I'll gladly take it !

Reasoning has been discussed in many threads over the years. In summary...

We are trying to protect buyers from potentially getting a non-up to spec camera from a seller by offering to evaluate the camera during the exchange. That is optional but recommended. The transfer fee is covering the backend logistics to transfer everything over from seller to buyer throughout our systems. It is not like copy-and-paste in Excel.

Frankly, as this thread shows, people circumvent the approved process. So be it. Secondly, most people have the seller absorb the transfer fee (or build it into selling price), not the buyer. Or split it 50/50.

Just to expand a bit on Brent's answer. This also very much protects the buyer from purchasing a potentially stolen camera and also puts the new owner into the support database for various firmware and software updates as well as general support when needed.

And, PS, if you do the eval and get clean bill of health, the transfer fee of $500 includes the 90-day warranty...

There are also lots of stolen cameras out there. The buyer might not be the thief but I'm sure it's understandable that if you lost a camera, it would be nice to find a way to recover it.

If a seller isn't the legit owner, it would be nice to stop them from stealing again. Serial numbers can do that.

The transfer fee also makes it more legit to prevent he says she says situations where people disagree. Who's to say that a seller can't turn around and say they're camera was stolen and claim the buyer didn't pay or pay enough etc.

Then there is the reason of if the camera is broken...

After all these discussion, I am still unable to get the scarlet MX firmware, my email is ahmerez(at)hotmail(dot)com

Thanks

Interesting. First and foremost I would contact RED directly. While you're at it, provide them the serial number of the camera and see if they can help you in some way. Let them know your situation and perhaps to get access to the RED software, firmware, and other documents they might provide the transfer fee option.

I have a small hunch that there's something funky with this camera and it likely should be cross referenced with the stolen body list. I don't know anybody who doesn't know how to retrieve a password on a website these days. As the seller, at a minimum, he should investigate that and perhaps also the transfer option.

Along with Phil, you should have THEM (the person you bought it from) contact Red and reset his/her password/username. If they are legit, that should be a very simple thing. They shouldn't forget their own address. Now if they are NOT the legit owners, or bought from another person, then you might have a tough time but even Red might be a good starting point if you did buy used.

Another +1 on Phil's post. Something sounds just a little strange here.

As for the request itself. Discussed a few times, RED has their reasons to keep it locked and they have their customers in mind with them. Your one and only way to get those things figured out should be by discussing it with the seller and RED. Asking other users to get you a way around is not a good thing. You are asking them to ignore RED's rules.
