Hi guys,
Here's my problem....I'm on day one of a five day commercial. My Epic monitoring is looking very soft. This is the case out of the SDI and the 5" Touch LCD. The footage in RCX seems to be OK.....But if I don't have "Focus Assist" on, the picture is really unwatchable because of softness out of the SDI monitor or the 5" touch. What can possibly be wrong?
Any help would be so appreciated.

Make sure you don't have the Sdi set to 720p. Someone did that to my camera once, to make it compatible with an older monitor. Took me about an hour to figure out what was wrong.

Timur, I'll check that when I get in this morning and report back.....If that'a the case would it also effect the 5" LCD as well? That what's so puzzling, both feeds are soft.....But I will check that setting for sure.....In the meantime, any other suggestions out there?

The 5 inche is soft !?!? ... thats a real problem.
Can you check your footage on RCX properly... Maybe you have a back focus issue... a bad lens...?
When you do a ZOOM in on your 5inche to check sharps, is the shot pin sharp.. or soft.... It should be pin..

Agh, that's what i DIDN'T want to hear! We did zoom in in RCX and although things looked "just" OK, I didn't think it was as sharp as it should be.....We changed out our lens set last night, went from Zeiss SS to UP's. I'll check BF, but I had the rental house put my camera on their bench for BF and they said it' all good.

The biggest problem using Focus assist is that when you view in normal mode everything looks outta focus cause your eyes adjust ;)

Could that possibly be it?

Seriousl mate... if your footage is looking fine in RCX, then I would assume that focus assist is probably rewiring your brain in awesome yet confusing ways!

Although, back to the LCD, there's no 720 setting for that that I should check, is there?

I could see there reasoning there, but, we've got two Epics on the job and the other one looks great on the same monitor with focus assist on.

Ditch the blurry one... Someones dicked with it... and needs recalibrating... And best do it by eye. the old fashioned way.

Good to see you had a spare body.

The safe bet is... If its soft in the monitors (especially the 5inche touch) , then its soft... Do sharp checks through digi ZOOM up... that will tell all.

Ive just gone through the menu just then, there is no 720p function for the RED onboard monitors.. only for the HDSDI out...

Hope you didnt shoot to much with it already.

We shot "enough" to make it uncomfortable.....I got fixed up in SF from John Chater, recommend came from Peter Strietmann, a reduser here. Clearly a BF issue, man, that is bad. But what a great community we have here.
