  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Need help putting together a scarlet-w kit 20k budget

Thank you all. I didnt expect so much help but I am glad I got it! Truth be told im not looking to get anything until the end of the year by then I would have my finances in order to get things off the ground as smooth as possible. I just wanted a basic idea of what I can get for 20k. Living in paradise isnt cheap im afraid. But again thank you to all who gave any bit of information to help. I will start a vlog of my journey this weekend.

This might be obvious to you, but don't forget to have a humidity controlled storage for your camera and lenses. Salt and humidity are bad for the camera, and lenses can get fungus inside if kept in humid environment for long periods. This happened to me and made some of my lenses pretty much worthless.

Only thing I would do different than the folks here is power the Scarlet with RedVolt XL's or, if you can wait, wait for The new Red V's. I like my setup light and small, and as a DSMC1 user, really love and will miss my Side handle Redvolt powered, "stealth" Epic configuration...

HI by my side I am hesitating beetwen both shoulder rig : tilta rig 1699 USD

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/992598-REG/ikan_tt_03_a_dslr_rig_tilta_4x4_carbon.html

or lanparte rig 1875 USD

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1100167-REG/lanparte_pk_02_c_professional_dslr_kit_v2.html

I just want to confirm first it will perfectly fit with scarlett W or red epic dragon. If someone can confirm this it will help a lot ;) thanks

I would stay away from "full cage" rigs the tilta rig I mentioned earlier will work great.. Then mix and match the matte box and follow focus.

Came to this thread looking for people's thoughts on a rig as I'm making my own decisions. There's some great advice here.

As you mentioned you're getting started, not sure if you have someone doing all your audio for you, but nobody has mentioned any in-camera audio solutions, which is worth mentioning for someone looking to join the Red family. http://woodencamera.com/A-Box-Weapon-Scarlet-W-Raven.html

Also, I haven't seen anyone mention ND. Consider it f you're doing a lot in bright sunlight for the cinematic look you mentioned. The Red isn't a camera that offers an internal ND solution without buying the motion mount. So, either purchasing ND for your matte box or get the red motion mount, though this would most likely blow your 20k budget, so something to consider down the line. (assume you're going Canon mount) http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-red-motion-ti-canon-mount

hey Whit. yah i used to own an "A-Box" i found it wasn't all that terrific. and any time i was on a gimbal or hand held it just added to much to the set up. I usually do my audio separate either with an designated sound mixer, or a small recorder/wireless lav for my "one man band" projects

As it pertains to matteboxes and filters, If the OP desired to go with the Ziess lens a simple screw on variable ND would be plenty to start out with. but yes If i was going to get my first mattebox all over again i would go with this http://woodencamera.com/Universal-Mattebox/UMB-1-Universal-Mattebox-Base.html

filters are expensive. I have been collecting them for a few years. it's one of those things u build up

I really like the Zacuto universal VCT for handheld work: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1093249-REG/zacuto_z_vct_vct_universal_baseplate.html, already used it (from rental) on 4 different camera bodies (Sony, Canon, RED) and it works great! it really feels solid on the shoulder, and I like the fact you have bars front and back and you can really use it on so many cameras plus it has rosettes on the sides if you want to add handles, it gives you everything you need, just add some cheap handles from small rig or something similar and a pogo to pogo cable + israeli arm to reposition the screen (or a monitor arm if you're using another monitor), and you're good to go. you could always add more stuff, but I think this all combo will be under $1000, and it's versatile and simple.

you can see it here at about 2:04 and 2:14 video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sY3fKBMoxA8&index=22&list=PL5_J1Agz7OTbeDmy15dPnMv-ZqbqRMlaR

Good day all. My name is LaVaughn Hamilton. I am 27 years old and have decided to follow my passion and pursue a career in cinematography. I live in the Bahamas and my mission in the next few years is to develop a film and tv industry in my beautiful country.

LaVaughn, is there that much work in the Bahamas?

The reason I ask is I have a good friend who is very talented, and he moved away from the Bahamas due to lack of work.

I wouldnt say there is much work....Thank God for a day job. There are some projects happening but truthfully I believe we as a people need to make some things happen. We have people with a lot of talent, but no money, no equipment and with the way the economy is and immigration in this world is becoming funny now its getting harder to move abroad. Be that as it may as I said before there is a group of us who want to develop something and I dont mind putting in work to see it done. This is my passion so the money is not really a big deal for me.

Thank you! Hopefully by years end I should have something in the works. Until then Ill just plan on my first short film, I have already started gathering some persons who are interested in film and television. I want them to succeed just as much as myself..........I know it sounds cliche but thats how I was raised.

you said my recomendtion for rig is too much money yet you recommend a rig thats way more expensive, without handle grips @@ also if you look further I suggested going with the $700 shoulder rig once i realized the OP wanted a 50mm lens in the kit

they do not make 256gb mini mags they make 240GB but 2 would be more expensive than 1 512. in most situations you can shoot all day on a 512 at 5k but i agree 2 120 gb cards could be a good start and save a bit of money

need a red touch display to control the camera (well don't NEED, but i cannot imagine shooting with out one)

the red side handle looks amazing but pricey and handle does not go where i normally put my hands during hand held camera operation

When you say you dont need the touch screen, what exactly does that mean? What are the alternatives?

Well the touchscreen serves two functions for most people -- camera control and monitoring.

CONTROL -- if not using the touch screen, two popular options exist. The first is using the wifi on the camera to connect to an app on a smartphone or tablet to control the camera -- most popular is FoolControl. Alternatively, you could purchase the RED Sidekick module and that will give you physical controls on your camera body.

MONITORING -- you can use pretty much any monitor that takes a 1080p signal. I personally will be using my Small HD702 monitor so I can load in my favorite shooting LUTs for on-set previews.

I personally don't love touchscreen controls and when slimming down my kit, will rely on my 702 to monitor and Sidekick to control camera functions.
