Good day all. My name is LaVaughn Hamilton. I am 27 years old and have decided to follow my passion and pursue a career in cinematography. I live in the Bahamas and my mission in the next few years is to develop a film and tv industry in my beautiful country.

So as the title suggests I need help in putting a kit together. This will be for rental as well as my own personal productions. Just a "solid jump off" as we like to say. I'm working my hip off on overtime to spring for this but as I am new to red please help me put together something of substance.

Our weather is primarily sunny and natural lighting is plentiful. We are humid as in most tropical climates.

My primary focus is on indie films first, commercials second and hopefully we get some local tv series produced as well. I want to get a shoulder mount as well because I love action shots. I would love to focus on mastering a single nifty fifty prime lens for now, and as my knowledge grows I will expand.

so $20,000 maybe 25,000 I have some people willing to help me out with this endeavor. But 20k for now

It's kinda hard to fit a lens into that price. I found this 50mm prime lens that looks pretty sweet as a first lens.

Here is another great lens (which I'm pretty sure works with fool control for focus)

this could be a cheaper more simple shoulder rig, but would still need a dove tail clamp or bridge plate to attach the camera to it. Also need to consider rails for follow focus/mattbox etc

i would personally get 2 x 120 GB cards over 1 512. Kinda makes shooting while dumping tough if you're waiting on a 512 to dump and having a backup card in case something happens to one is always better.

Agreed, plus is also frees up $750 or so to put towards that lens.

EDIT: Shit, you beat me to it.

Matthew has given you a lot of great options. He is right on the money. However, the elephant in the room is that if you are just buying a Scarlet-W now, you are in for a pretty decent wait.

The Milvus lenses are manual and awesome, canon mount only has electronic iris, I have the ZF mount 35mm and love it for a modern look compared to my leica r lenses. Here is the 20K kit I am waiting for from abelcine, came with reducation workshop-keep in mind I own roughly another 30K in support gear, lenses, drives, audio ect. so keep that in consideration

The thing with the Rig is you can piece together something from SmallRig off Amazon and it's 1/5 the price or even less than the price of Wooden Camera, who does make the best stuff but pretty expensive. For a budget manufacturer, SmallRig makes really good stuff. That's what I did at least and I love my rig - super light and minimal. For rigs, I try and cut anything extra because of weight and $$$$.

For example, the SmallRig Nato handle is $90 vs $250 from Wooden Camera. I have both and the SmallRig NATO handle is much better - slightly longer, more functional and fits your hand better. I bought the NATO rail component for a second handle and the Wooden Camera rail was a ridiculous $100 vs $10 from SmallRig and they are IDENTICAL. I felt so ripped off paying $100 for a tiny rail that costed maybe $3 to manufacture. Also, the 15mm rail block from WC is $140. The SmallRig version is $20 and fits perfectly onto the WC handle since they both adhere to NATO standards. Crazy price difference. The thing with SmallRig is they come up with their own designs and they're really smart as well. Not just a clone of what American companies make.

Sometimes you just have to buy the Wooden Camera (I have a lot of WC stuff), Zacuto, Arri, etc... version; but often there is a much cheaper alternative that is just as good.

Also, I would personally get 150wh batteries. You can get very light ones from Bebob and Dynacore. Batteries on Red go fast and 97wh would drive me nuts on a stressful shoot. 150wh is already pretty quick, maybe 2 hours with accessories running.

Cards, you definitely need two. I sold my 120 gig that came with the S-W and bought a 512 gig card so I have 2 x 512 gig cards. However, I think this is a bit overkill as I only use my S-W for scripted stuff, network promos, music videos and my higher end projects where the camera is not running all the time. I have my FS7 for documentary work where I burn through card space. Since my S-W is for a different purpose, I would have been fine with just a 120 gig and 512 gig and I wish I didn't spend the extra $$$$ on a 512 gig card as I haven't even come close to filling both on any job yet.

120GB cards get gobbled up when you record dual formats (prores+R3D) which is one of my favorite features on the S-W. I use 2 512 GB cards and a 120GB. granted I dont always use it up, and sometimes i need to consider my 2nd cam

and yah smallrig has some awesome parts. but they are often not compatable with other standard equipment. Ie: the rossettes are not the same size the more i look at it i would go with the tilta rig from came-tv.com if i had budget issues (I just realized it comes with choise of 15mm or 19mm bridgeplate). then grab the easy riser and 15mm light weight rods. top handle would be something you could save money on for sure.

Maybe mix and match a little bit, some Wooden Cam some SmallRig and save yourself serious $$$$. That's what I did anyways and am very happy with my rig.

With the exta $1000 that would save you, I would get a wooden camera PL mount.

I agree having a pl mount is a very good idea. for a beginer i would deff recommend starting with EF lenses and experiment with fool control. EF lenses are often less expensive and more common especially if you come from the realm of dslr shooting

I toally agree about the mixing and matching of aks

If you're going to buy just one lens get the Sigma 18-35mm Art.....It gives you so much flexibility for one lens that you'll find you won't need to use much else (unless you're a telephoto kinda guy)

It seems, you are spending a lots of money on Rig.

I think, I'd rather go

Rig + Battery module + XLR phantom power + a lots of inputs and out puts. (3000$)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/TILTA-ESR-T...155591?hash=item3f68522d07:g:zwMAAOSwtnpXprXU

I tend to holding the red like medium format, so I will throw (I use easy rig)

(DSMC2 Side handle)
http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc2-side-handle

Lens mount could be like yours

About the Display, I don't mind the things that I have

(Atmos Shogun/ odyssey 7q+)

Media, I don't think I need to get 512, I prefer 2x 256 (So that you can swap in between)

I think I will spend about 17-18k.

you said my recomendtion for rig is too much money yet you recommend a rig thats way more expensive, without handle grips @@ also if you look further I suggested going with the $700 shoulder rig once i realized the OP wanted a 50mm lens in the kit

they do not make 256gb mini mags they make 240GB but 2 would be more expensive than 1 512. in most situations you can shoot all day on a 512 at 5k but i agree 2 120 gb cards could be a good start and save a bit of money

need a red touch display to control the camera (well don't NEED, but i cannot imagine shooting with out one)

the red side handle looks amazing but pricey and handle does not go where i normally put my hands during hand held camera operation
