  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

neat video

I think the home version has a resolution limitation.

I bought last weekend to clean up some low-light footage... results are impressive.

I'll back up Bruce on this. $99 and it's one of the best investments to help your shots look better.

I first got it to clean up R1 M footage pre MX sensor. It's the bomb. You will need it one day and you will be glad you spent the 99 bucks.

It's so good that you will never bother with anything else, like the noise reduction in Resolve for example. It's so good, it even cleaned up some horrible compression artifacts that came from shooting Redcode 28 in slow-motion with a huge amount of detail in the frame. It's so good, I had a DP want us to go back and push all the low light shots even further in colour correction once he saw how well the noise could be eliminated.

That's the second time today I've seen this software mentioned; I'm buying without further delay!

How do you guys fit it into your workflow? Obviously(?) it doesn't work on native R3Ds, so I guess you keep everything else as per normal, work with your look in RCX, render out (or use proxies) and edit in Premiere or FCP, then give the shots that need noise reduction a pass through Neat at that stage?

Thanks

Mike

Actually, it does work natively on R3D's, I use it as a plugin for VirtualDub.

*edit

But maybe you mean once the cleaning has been done, it's no R3D anymore? True.

The results are generally very good. The only thing that really sucks about Neat Video is their licensing scheme. I shouldn't have to buy a different version of it for every piece of software I use. I've bought the pro version for FCP, but why should I have to buy it again for both After Effects and Premiere (which I sometimes have to use)? I'd also want to use it with Nuke. This would mean $100+100*100*200 = $500, which is ridiculous!

this is my big issue... which is holding me back.. because right now i USE FCP, but might switch over to adobe at one point in the near future.

One good thing is it's a one time license. I bought it for Adobe Premiere a couple of years ago. Since then I've moved it to new computers and newer versions of Premiere as I've upgraded.

Neat video is the fucking bomb. Every single one of my shots in "TimeScapes 4K" had neat video applied to it. It's pretty amazing.

Send them an email and you can switch licenses once you move to adobe. I had the FCP version then made the switch to Premiere and it only cost me $15, but it will deactivate your FCP version.

I ordered for FCP and AE and got a reduced price, $80/license or something, maybe. Not sure they're still doing this. From the above post, looks like they let you switch platforms, too.

With Red footage and digital footage in general I've had amazing luck with it. It's not as good with film for whatever reason. There's probably better software, but not for the price. Play around with temporal window and different settings--they make a huge difference and so it's worth experimenting when you've got a really bad shot, but it's not hard to use at all.
